When it is necessary to wear masks for long periods, such as during the current COVID-19 pandemic, the essential function of masks to prevent contamination (or transmission to others) as well as comfortableness are important. For this study, we used three-dimensional (3D) facial measurements of adult women to compile basic face shape data for designing comfortable and effective masks. This study analyzed the 3D facial data of 127 subjects in their 20s to 30s of the 6th Size Korea. Factor analysis of the survey data produced seven factors that formed the composition of adult female faces. These factors combined to produce three facial types: square (long face and a large lower middle face), oval (smallest central and lower body in the middle), and triangle (short face with a small central and lower large nose). These types reflect that the facial types of adult women show the differences in the nose angle, nose length, bitragion-subnasal arc, bitragion-menton arc. Therefore, properly fitting masks for fine dust particle filtration require 3D customization of a mask's breathing apparatus to fit differently shaped central and lower face parts that interfere with mask fit.
Background: The dimensions and shape of the forehead determine the esthetics of the upper third of the face. Korean young people consider a broad and smooth, rounded forehead more attractive. As a result, frontal augmentation becomes more popular in patients with dentofacial deformities. Various surgical procedures and materials have been used in frontal augmentation surgery, with associated advantages and disadvantages. Silicone is a good candidate for frontal augmentation. The author presents two cases of esthetic frontal augmentation with a prefabricated silicone implant in female patients with dentofacial deformities. Case presentation: In case 1, a 24-year-old female patient underwent frontal augmentation surgery with simultaneous maxillomandibular and zygomatic osteotomies to correct facial asymmetry. A silicone implant was fabricated preoperatively using a positive template stone mold of her forehead. In case 2, a 23-year-old female patient underwent total facial contouring surgery including frontal augmentation for improved facial esthetics. A computed tomography (CT)-guided rapid prototype (RP) model was used to make the silicone implants. The operative procedure was safe and simple, and the silicone implants were reliable for a larger degree of frontal augmentation. Six months later, both patients had recovered from the surgery and were satisfied with their frontal shape and projection. Conclusions: Frontal augmentation with silicone implants can be an effective adjuvant strategy to improve facial esthetics in patients with a flat and narrow forehead who undergo orthognathic reconstruction or total facial contouring surgery.
In many developed countries, for example, USA, respirator fit testing is required before entering specific work environment to ensure that the respirator worn satisfies a minimum of fit and that the user knows when the respirator fits properly. Unfortunately because we have not fit test regulation in Korea, a lot of workers wearing respirators may be potentially exposed to hazards. This study was conducted to evaluate the fitting performance for respirators and correlation fit factors with facial dimensions of wearers. 110 subjects (70 males, 40 females) were fit tested for three quarter masks, i.e., two domestic-made Mask 2, and Y and one foreign-made Mask T using PortaCount 8020. A facial dimension survey of the same subjects was conducted to develop a facial dimension grids fer correlation fit factors with facial dimension parameters. A facial dimension grid was developed on the basis of face length and lip length for quarter masks. The results obtained were as follows : 1 Fit factors of Mask T were much higher than those of Masks Z, and Y. 2. Males were fitted more properly than females. 3. Male in box 'f' of grid would be adequately fitted Mask Y and male in box 'b', 'e', 'f', 'h' of grid would be sufficiently fitted Mask T. Female in box 'h' of grid may have a good fitting performance for both Mask Y, and T. But subjects in all boxes of grid would be inadequately fitted Mask Z.
This paper presents a new system for facial expression recognition based in dimension model of internal states. The information of facial expression are extracted to the three steps. In the first step, Gabor wavelet representation extracts the edges of face components. In the second step, sparse features of facial expressions are extracted using fuzzy C-means(FCM) clustering algorithm on neutral faces, and in the third step, are extracted using the Dynamic Model(DM) on the expression images. Finally, we show the recognition of facial expression based on the dimension model of internal states using a multi-layer perceptron. The two dimensional structure of emotion shows that it is possible to recognize not only facial expressions related to basic emotions but also expressions of various emotion.
The quadrilateral analysis is a proportional analysis which evaluates the skeletal configuration of lower face on the relations between both jaws in the horizontal as we]1 as vortical dimensions. This study was undertaken to analyse the harmony and disharmony of quadrilateral patterns in normal occlusion and malocclusion. The present study was carried out on lateral cephalograms of 530 Korean children; the subjects consisted of 135 normal occlusions (63 male and 72 female), 105 Class II division 1 malocclusions (52 male and 53 female), 109 Class III malocclusions (50 male and 59 female), 91 hypodivergent facial types (44 male and 47 female) and 90 hyperdivergent facial types (45 male and 45 female). The following conclusions were reached: 1. Means and standard deviation in each group and sex were obtained from normal occlusion and malocclusion. 2. Quadrilateral mean diagram in normal occlusion was constructed for male and female, respectively. 3. In normal occlusion, 1:1 ratio exists between the maxillary base length (A' to Ptm') and mandibular base length (B' to J'), but lower facial height is targer than above. 4. Difference is effective to estimate the degrees of Class II and Class III malocclusion, and lower facial height (LFH) and sagittal angle is effective to recognize the hypodivergent and hyperdivergent facial type. 5. Quadrilateral analysis is able to visualize the anteroposterior and vertical dysplasia of lower face, and it is helpful to recognize certain problems in malocclusion.
Objective: The aims of this study were to measure and compare the facial dimensions of the Miss Korea pageant contestants and a selected group of women from the general population by using three-dimensional (3D) image analysis, as well as to compare various facial ratios to the golden ratio within each group. Methods: Three-dimensional images of 52 Miss Korea pageant contestants (MK group) and 41 young female adults selected from the general population (GP group) were acquired. Fifty-four variables and ratios were measured and calculated. Intergroup comparisons were performed using multivariate analysis of variance. Results: Compared to the GP group, the MK group showed greater total facial height and eye width, lesser lower-facial height, and lesser facial, lower-facial, and nasal widths. Moreover, compared to the GP group, the MK group had more protruded noses with greater nasolabial angle, greater vertical curvature of the foreheads, lesser horizontal curvature of the cheek, and lesser lower-lip-and-chin volume. Conclusions: The MK group had longer faces but smaller lower lips and chins than did the GP group. The golden ratio was not matching the current facial esthetic standards. These data might be beneficial for treatment planning of patients undergoing orthognathic and plastic surgeries.
This paper describes how to distribute high multi-dimensional facial expression data of vast quantity over a suitable space and produce facial expression animations by selecting expressions while animator navigates this space in real-time. We have constructed facial spaces by using about 2400 facial expression frames on this paper. These facial spaces are created by calculating of the shortest distance between two random expressions. The distance between two points In the space of expression, which is manifold space, is described approximately as following; When the linear distance of them is shorter than a decided value, if the two expressions are adjacent after defining the expression state vector of facial status using distance matrix expressing distance between two markers, this will be considered as the shortest distance (manifold distance) of the two expressions. Once the distance of those adjacent expressions was decided, We have taken a Floyd algorithm connecting these adjacent distances to yield the shortest distance of the two expressions. We have used CCA(Curvilinear Component Analysis) technique to visualize multi-dimensional spaces, the form of expressing space, into two dimensions. While the animators navigate this two dimensional spaces, they produce a facial animation by using user interface in real-time.
This paper describes method to distribute much high-dimensional facial expression motion data to 2 dimensional space, and method to create facial expression animation by select expressions that want by realtime as animator navigates this space. In this paper composed expression space using about 2400 facial expression frames. The creation of facial space is ended by decision of shortest distance between any two expressions. The expression space as manifold space expresses approximately distance between two points as following. After define expression state vector that express state of each expression using distance matrix which represent distance between any markers, if two expression adjoin, regard this as approximate about shortest distance between two expressions. So, if adjacency distance is decided between adjacency expressions, connect these adjacency distances and yield shortest distance between any two expression states, use Floyd algorithm for this. To materialize expression space that is high-dimensional space, project on 2 dimensions using Sammon's Mapping. Facial animation create by realtime with animators navigating 2 dimensional space using user interface.
Face detection using the LBP based feature descriptor has issues in that it can not represent spatial information between facial shape and facial components such as eyes, nose and mouth. To address these issues, in previous research, a facial image was divided into a number of square sub-regions. However, since the sub-regions are divided into different numbers and sizes, the division criteria of the sub-region suitable for the database used in the experiment is ambiguous, the dimension of the LBP histogram increases in proportion to the number of sub-regions and as the number of sub-regions increases, the sensitivity to facial orientation rotation increases significantly. In this paper, we present a novel facial region segmentation method that can solve in-plane rotation issues associated with LBP based feature descriptors and the number of dimensions of feature descriptors. As a result, the proposed method showed detection accuracy of 99.0278% from a single facial image rotated in orientation.
The purpose of this study was to investigate proportional characteristics of soft tissue profile in Korean young adults. The sample consisted of 50 young adults(25 males and 25 females) who had pleasing profile and normal occlusion. Soft tissue proportional analysis was performed on lateral cephalograms taken in natural head position. The results were as follows : 1. Mean and standard deviation of proportional analysis were obtained. 2. Horizontal and vertical dimensions were larger in male. But facial proportion had no sexual difference except upper/lower face height (p<0.05). Upper/lower face height was larger in female than in male. 3. Vertical dimensions, except SN-ST, had high correlation with horizontal dimensions. 4. Head positioning error of natural head position was smaller than inter -individual variability of SN line.
