  • Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) is principally characterized by cutaneous basal cell carcinomas, multiple odontogenic keratocysts and skeletal abnormalities. Our patient represented several characteristics of BCNS, such as, multiple odontogenic keratocysts, facial nevus, calcification of falx cerebri, parietal bossing and mental retardation. The cyst on posterior mandible showed recurrent and newly developing tendency.

  • We discovered a syrphid species, Tropidia rostrata Shiraki, 1930, for the first time in Korea. This is the first member of the genus Tropidia recorded in Korea. This species can be distinguished from other Palaearctic members of Tropidia by the combination of the following characteristics: lower facial margin strongly protrudes forward; apical 3/4 of hind femur black; and tergites 2 and 3 each with a pair large yellowish brown square spots (not reached hind margin). We here provide a detailed redescription supplemented by the color photographs of external structures including genitalia. We also discussed the status of primary types associated with this taxon.

  • Juvenile ossifying fibroma is an expansive intraosseous lesion of the bones. In most patients, the tumors are located in the facial bones. The main characteristics of juvenile ossifying fibroma are the early age of onset, localization of the tumor, radiological pattern and a tendency for recurrence. This article describes a case of expanded juvenile ossifying fibroma in the right maxilla in a 12-year old boy. The lesion was removed totally by surgery under general anesthesia. The patient showed no radiological signals of recurrence approximately two years after surgery.

  • Over the last few years computer based image processing has become more prominent in forensic science. The image quality from many CCTV systems is too poor for facial recognition. but there are other human characteristics which allow us to recognize individuals from a distance. one of these parameters is a human's height. In this paper, we propose useful height measurement method by auto Position, size adjustment which uses image superimposition and edge detection regardless of lens distortion and not uses conventional photogrammetry calibration methods.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate proportional characteristics of soft tissue profile in Korean young adults. The sample consisted of 50 young adults(25 males and 25 females) who had pleasing profile and normal occlusion. Soft tissue proportional analysis was performed on lateral cephalograms taken in natural head position. The results were as follows : 1. Mean and standard deviation of proportional analysis were obtained. 2. Horizontal and vertical dimensions were larger in male. But facial proportion had no sexual difference except upper/lower face height (p<0.05). Upper/lower face height was larger in female than in male. 3. Vertical dimensions, except SN-ST, had high correlation with horizontal dimensions. 4. Head positioning error of natural head position was smaller than inter -individual variability of SN line.

  • Aesthetic facial profile is mainly determined by cultural background. In some countries, prominent mandibular angle is considered as characteristics, whereas it is considered as unattractive in East Asian countries. Therefore, reduction surgery for prominent mandibular angle is one of the popular cosmetic surgery in theses countries. The anatomical component of the mandibular angle consists of masseter muscle and the angular part of the mandibular ramus. Thus, the mandibular angle reduction can be performed by myotomy or bone reduction or both.

  • In this paper, I propose a method for detection of look-alike offenders by using hidden face information. For extraction of moving objects, PRA matching is used to extract moving components, and brightness changes can be dealt with by an adaptive threshold adjusting in the proposed method. Moving objects extracted in the territory of the face region is extracted using the complexion, facial area, eyes, nose, mouth. The extracted information detected by the presence of these characteristics were likely to help judge a person. Results of the extracted face makes the recognition rate of possible murderers 90% so the usefulness of the proposed method was confirmed.

  • Non-odontogenic toothaches are frequently present and can be challenge to the dental clinician. A 41-year-old male patient with sharp and spontaneous pain on the right maxillary posterior dentition, which developed as like localized toothache 3 months ago, was finally treated with endoscope assisted sinus surgery on right maxillary sinus. Although the initial clinical characteristics are similar to odontogenic toothache in this patient, previous several treatment with the affected teeth did not alleviate the pain. Sinusitis around the facial structure is one of the common causes to make referred pain to maximally teeth and the sinus toothache resembles the pulpal or the periodontal toothache. The clinician should be well aware of various causes of the non-odontogenic toothache and be able to differentiate them.

  • Midfacial retrusion is one of characteristics of cleft patients due to underdevelopment of the midface. In this case, Le Fort II advancement is indicated. But there has not been reported on intraoral approach to Le Fort II osteotomy for correction of midface, which traditional technique resulted in facial scar. To overcome the problems, Le Fort II osteotomy via only intraoral approach named 'Intraoral Le Fort IT osteotomy' was developed by Choung in 1994, this technique was applied to cleft patients. A new technique of Intraoral Le Fort IT osteotomy for correction of midface in cleft patients was successfully carried out with good results. This technique showed no noticeable relapse nor complications, which is reported.
