  • FTTH (Fiber to the Home) is constructed with optical devices and optical cables from central office (CO) to subscribers. With FTTH, it is possible to provide service platform in order to meet the customers' emerging demands for more bandwidth/security and diverse IP multimedia applications including high definition (HD) video streaming service. FTTH can provide enough bandwidth from 100Mbps to several Gbps per subscriber. It is also most appropriate network architecture for convergence of communication and broadcasting. So, FTTH is thought the final destination of telecom operators, since it is the fastest and most reliable solution so far and various IP multimedia services are possible through it. In this paper, newly attempted technologies of FTTH construction for apartment complexes using CWDM-PON system are discussed.

Wavelength Integration Transmission Method for Hybrid-PON (Hybrid-PON을 위한 파장통합 전송방식)

  • The FTTH is known as an optimal solution to provide broadband services like IPTV and the W-PON is a good alternative to implement the FTTH. It is firstly commercialized in Korea but not widely deployed because of it's high price. In this paper, we suggest a wavelength integration method to drop the price and enhance the utilization of the W-PON. The method makes one logical channel with multiple wavelengths when the W-PON system has to accommodate a signal of which transmission rate is greater than the rate of a single wavelength. Accordingly, the system can accommodate any signal rate. We introduce a frame structure, suggest synchronization and clock recovery methods, and finally show actual applications for the Ethernet and the G-PON.

  • This article describes developments in fiber to the home (FTTH), and introduces the technical reviews for the various types to realize FTTH. Also, we have presented the results of each EPON, GPON and WDM-PON standardization by each IEEE, ITU-T and TTA. Finally, based on the above results, we proposed the trend of FTTH service deployment strategies.

  • Recently, broadband access networks have been competitively deployed all over the world with the development of various multimedia services for such a network. ETRI(Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) built the FTTH(Fiber-To-the-Home) service center to develop a next-generation equipment and a high-quality service/platform as well as to promote domestic industry in the field of optical communication. The FTTH service center has a variety of test equipments such as FTTH standard testbed for a BMT(bench mark test), a network operation center, and IPTV service equipments. Also, ETRI deployed a new type of commercial optical access networks cooperating with ISP(Internet Service Provider). This paper presents the performance evaluation of FTTH E-PON(Ethernet Passive Optical Network) system as a platform for TPS(Triple Play Service) based on QoS(Quality of Service) and QoE(Quality of Expericence) issues. This FTTH E-PON system is successfully demonstrated as an optical access network system by commercial network service provider and the FTTH service center of ETRI.

  • FTTH service has been deployed since last year in the single dwelling unit environment. FTTH based on PON technology has many advantages in OPEX compared to FTTC solutions using the BBx. But this is not the case for the MDU environment where new wiring of the fiber cable in the customer premises network costs a lot of money. The purpose of Hybrid-FTTH is to overcome this problem by preserving the wiring environment of the customer premises environment in MDU but still guarantee the quality of service provided by FTTH. In this thesis, we present Hybrid-FTTH technology, especially focused on the DWDM-PON based Hybrid-FTTH technology and its development status.

  • In this paper, we deal with an access network design problem of fiber-to-the-home passive optical network (FTTH-PON). The FTTH-PON network design problem seeks to minimize the total cost of optical splitters and cables that provide optical connectivity between central office and subscribers. We develop a flow-based mixed integer programming (MIP) model with nonlinear link cost. By developing valid inequalities and preprocessing rules, we enhance the strength of the proposed MIP model in generating tight lower bounds for the problem. We develop an effective Tabu Search (TS) heuristic algorithm that provides good quality feasible solutions to the problem. Computational results demonstrate that the valid inequalities and preprocessing rules are effective for improving the LP-relaxation lower bound and TS algorithm finds good quality solutions within reasonable time bounds.

  • 정보통신에 대한 생활의 의존도가 높아지면서 일반가입자 구간의 전송속도도 함께 높아지고 있는 추세이다. 향후 2000년대를 대비하여 각 가정에까지 광케이블을 연결하자는 FTTH (fiber to the home) 전략에 따라 세계 각 국에서는 이에 대한 연구개발을 추진중에 있다. PON (passive optical network)은 FTTH를 현실적으로 실현하기 위한 전송장치 개념으로서 본 고에서는 이에 관련된 내용을 중심으로 연구개발 동향과 FTTH 구축 전망을 살펴본다.

  • 최근 통신산업의 최대 이슈인 새로운 성장동력원 발굴의 중심에는 통방융합 서비스가 있으며, 통방융합서비스 제공을 위한 인프라를 어떻게 구축할 것인가 하는 것이 전세계 통신사업자들이 안고 있는 숙제이다. 이에 KT에서 개발 중인 가입자당 양방향 100Mbps를 제공할 수 있는 저가형 WDM-PON 시스템을 소개하고, 아울러 FTTH 구축 활성화를 위해서 해결해야 할 문제점들에 대하여 기술적 측면과 제도적 측면에서 언급하였다.

  • This paper addresses the implementation of FTTH system based on G-PON technology. This system supports the duplication function that can switchover both TDM and data routes within 10msec. This system consists of OLT and ONU/ONT. G-PON OLT supports the maximum 32 2.5Gbps interfaces, and then has the flexibility and the scalability for supplying digital communication and broadcasting convergence service in the near future. OLT system consists switch module, subscriber module, processor module, and G-PON link module, and has the operating system based on Linux. ONU is installed in customer premise to supply TPS (Triple Play Service). Also ONT has the dedicated interface for IP-TV to improve the transmission characteristics of IP-TV signal.
