Three-dimensional finite element analysis is performed to study the temperature distribution phenomenon of TIG assisted friction stir welding (TAFSW) between dissimilar plates (Al 6061-T6 and stainless steel 304). TAFSW is a solid-state welding process that integrates TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) into a friction stir welding (FSW), to preheat the harder material ahead of FSW tool during welding. In order to facilitate the industrial application of welding, 3D numerical modeling of heat transfer has been carried out applying Finite Element Method (FEM). The temperature distribution due to heat generation during TAFSW on dissimilar materials joint is analysed using in-house solver. Moving heat source along with frictional heat between the work specimens and tool surface is considered to calculate the heat input. The analytical model used predicts successfully the maximum welding temperatures that occur on the dissimilar materials during TAFSW. Comparison with the infra red camera and thermocouple measurement results shows that the results from the current numerical simulation have good agreement with the measured data.
There are so many difficulties of melt bonding mainly applied for hull construction of a aluminum alloy small boat. For resolving this problem, Friction stir welding(FSW) in non-melting solid state welding Process generally is applied in the transport industry. This paper is studied the joining strength characteristics and macrostructure according to dissimilar aluminium 5000/6000 alloy joining for a small boat applied for this FSW technology. It is reported that difference of joining strength in accordance with the direction of rotation in case of friction stir welding between dissimilar metals(Al/Cu, Al/Fe) is also highly large. In this study, Test is carried out by making the specimen according to the direction of rotation of dissimilar aluminium alloy joining.
The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a new joining method that was developed at The Welding Institute (TWI) in England in 1991. It applied heating by the rotational friction and material plastic flow. It was developed as a new joining method to solve the problems of epochally in the welding of Al alloys. In the study, 6000series of Alloy composed of AI-Mg-Si, one of the Al alloys that are utilized for shipbuilding and construction, is selected as a specimen and the numerical is executed against the welded zone of FSW. The material used in this study had the unique properties of strength and anti-corrosion, but since the welded joint of this material is easily softened by the welding heat, FSW is executed and the numerical analysis is carried out around the joint. To examine the mechanical behaviors and properties, F.E.M analysis is executed and the developed thermal-elastic-plastic [mite analysis are used.

The mixing of two dissimilar aluminum alloys in friction stir welding (FSW) was investigated using etching. The results show that the materials from the retreating side mixed into the advancing side in rather narrow and elongated bands whereas the materials from the advancing side mixed into the retreating side in the form of thick bands and lobes. A computational method using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is introduced as a way to properly describe the complex mixing behavior in FSW.
This study was carried out to evaluate the microstructures and mechanical properties of a friction stir welded Ni based alloy. Inconel 600 (single phase type) alloy was selected as an experimental material. For this material, friction stir welding (FSW) was performed at a constant tool rotation speed of 400 rpm and a welding speed of 150~200 mm/min by a FSW machine, and argon shielding gas was utilized to prevent surface oxidation of the weld material. At all conditions, sound friction stir welds without any weld defects were obtained. The electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) method was used to analyze the grain boundary character distributions (GBCDs) of the welds. As a result, dynamic recrystallization was observed at all conditions. In addition, grain refinement was achieved in the stir zone, gradually accelerating from 19 ${\mu}m$ in average grain size of the base material to 5.5 ${\mu}m$ (150 mm/min) and 4.1 ${\mu}m$ (200 mm/min) in the stir zone with increasing welding speed. Grain refinement also led to enhancement of the mechanical properties: the 200 mm/min friction stir welded zone showed 25% higher microhardness and 15% higher tensile strength relative to the base material.

The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has mainly been used for making butt joints in Al alloys. Development of FSW would expand the number of applications. The FSW is a relatively solid-state joining process. This study possibility of a welding between C1020 and Al6063 by means of FSW has fundamentally clarified. The primary process parameters, such as a rotating speed, rotating direction of tool and off-set of pin periphery from materials interface were optimize, respectively.

The use of high-strength aluminum alloys is increasing in shipbuilding industry, particularly for the design and construction of war ships, littoral surface craft and combat ships, and fast passenger ships. While various welding methods are used today to fabricate aluminum ship structures, namely gas metallic arc welding (GMAW), laser welding and friction stir welding (FSW), FSW technology has been recognized to have many advantages for the construction of aluminum structures, as it is a low-cost welding process. In the present study, mechanical properties of friction stir welded aluminum alloys are examined experimentally. Tensile testing is undertaken on dog-bone type test specimen for aluminum alloys 5083 and 5383. The test specimen includes friction stir welded material between identical alloys and also dissimilar alloys, as well as unwelded (base) alloys. Mechanical properties of fusion welded aluminum alloys are also tested and compared with those of friction stir welded alloys. The insights developed from the present study are documented together with details of the test database. Part of the present study was obtained from the Ship Structure Committee project SR-1454 (Paik, 2009), jointly funded by its member agencies.
This paper investigates the tensile properties of the friction stir welded joints of Al 7075-T651 aluminum plate according to the welding conditions. A 7075-T651 aluminum alloy plate with a thickness of 6.0 mm was used in this investigation. For the friction stir welding (FSW) process, a tool with shoulder diameter of 20 mm and probe diameter of 9 mm was used. The rotation speed and traverse speed conditions were changed in this study, the other welding conditions are constant. The welding direction was aligned with the material rolling direction, and dimension of the FSW plate were $250{\times}100{\times}6\;mm$. As far as this work is concerned, the optimal FSW conditions are determined as the rotation speed, 600 rpm and traverse speed 0.8 mm/sec or the rotation speed, 800 rpm and traverse speed 0.5 mm/sec.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a relatively new joining technique particularly for magnesium and aluminum alloys that are difficult to fusion weld. In this study, AZ31 Mg alloys were joined by FSW with shoulder diameter 11, 19 mm and rotating speed 900, 1200, 1500, 1800 rpm. The shoulder diameter and welding speed depended on the heat input during FSW process. As a result, the microstructures of stir zone were a fine grain by dynamic recrystallization. According to the larger shoulder diameter and the higher rotating speed, refined grain sizes of stir zone were grown by higher heat input, and the microhardness of stir zone was lower. The tensile strength at the shoulder diameter 19 mm, rotating speed 900 rpm was obtained maximum value. This value compared with the base metal was over 93%.
MIG or TIG welding has been the most popular welding process for joining aluminum alloy structures. However, porosity, hot crack and distortion were serious problems in inert gas fusion welding. Since FSW(Friction Stir Welding) was invented by TWI in 1991, it has been the powerful candidate for solving the problems of inert gas welding. In this paper, the principle and characteristics of FSW is introduced and its application to rolling stocks is presented to make basis for future development in production technology of aluminum rolling Stocks.
