Ultrasonic testing method has been developed to evaluate flaw of adhesive layers in blast tube for the reliability of the rocket nozzle. The ultrasonic reflection from the interface between the steel sheet and the epoxy adhesive is measured with a high-frequency Pulse-echo setup in order to identify contact debonding and missing adhesive in epoxy layer between steel and FRP layers. The steel sheet is resonated by low-frequency ultrasound, and the gap size underneath the measuring location is estimated from the resonance responses. For practical application in industry an automated testing system has been developed where the proposed approach is implemented. The performance of the proposed approach has been verified by actual measurement of gap sizes from the cross-sections of cut specimens using an optical microscope.

Ultrasonic testing method has been developed to evaluate adhesive layers in blast tube for the reliability of the rocket. The main objective of the present work was to find debonding and missing adhesive in epoxy layer between steel and FRP layers. In this approach, the ultrasonic reflection from the interface between the steel sheet and the epoxy adhesive is measured with a high-frequency pulse-echo setup in order to identify contact debonding and missing adhesive. Then, the steel sheet is excited to resonance by low-frequency ultrasound, and the gap size underneath the measuring location is estimated from the resonance responses. For practical application in industry an automated testing system has been developed where the proposed approach is implemented. The performance of the proposed approach has been verified by actual measurement of gap sizes from the cross-sections of cut specimens using an optical microscope.
In piloti-type low-rise RC residential buildings, severe damages have been usually concentrated at piloti stories under the earthquake. In this study, a piloti story was retrofitted by installation of buckling-restrained braces (BRB's) to increase strength and stiffness of piloti story and by application of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheet on columns to avoid the brittle shear and axial failure of columns. To verify this retrofit performance, reversed cyclic lateral load tests were performed on 1:5 scale bare and retrofitted frames. The test results showed that yield strength (43.2 kN) appeared to be significantly larger than design value (30 kN) due to the increase of strength in the compression side, but the stiffness value (11.6 kN/mm) turned out to be approximately one-half of the design value (24.2 kN/mm). The reasons for this difference in stiffness were due to slippage at joint between the frame and the BRB's, displacement and rotation at footing. The energy absorption capacity of the retrofitted frame was 7.5 times larger than that of the bare frame. The change of the number of load cells under the footing from 2 to 1 reduced lateral stiffness from 11.6 kN/mm to 6 kN/mm, which was only three times larger than that of the bare frame (2.1 kN/mm).

This study is to examine the feasibility of carbon fiber sheet(CFS), a kind of fiber reinforced plastic(FRP), for a repair and reinforcement of R/C beams. The flexural strength of R/C beams, that were preloaded and then the cracks were repaired, maintains that of the uncracked R/C beams. The flexural strength of R/C beams increases with the reinforcement of CFS. In order to practically apply the repair and reinforcement method, further research is needed for the distribution, amount, and bond of CFS. In this study, an experiment was conducted for R/C beams reinforced with CFS, for various wrapping method and amounts of CFS. Experimental results showed the wrapping method increasing the bond area and amount of CFS layer caused the increase in the strength of the beams. It is found that the strength of CFS should be used as 70% of the maximum strength in retrofitting reinforced concrete beams in evaluating flexural capacity on the basis of ultimate strength design method.

In the recent construction industry, FRP is highly interesting in strengthening members of structures because it has superior material properties. This paper is an experimental study on the structural behavior of reinforced concrete beam when in using various amount of CFRP and the ductility of beams using various type of CFRP. In the experiment, when it makes an experiment using various amount of CFRP, strengthening width is more efficient than strengthening layer. The failure of CFRP strengthened beams presented brittle modes with having flexural failures. Also, It represented that most of beams classify brittle failure in the side of energy ratio. Energy ratio of CFRP sheet comparing with CFRP plate exceeds overall 50% and it represents about 70% in case of beams without strengthening layer.
An investigation was conducted on the activities around Europe in order to solve the problem of the thermal bridging of steel studs, which had caused a significant disadvantage. This study included the following: diminishing the contact area between the studs and the sheathing, lengthening the heat transfer route, replacing the steel web with a less conductive material, and placing foam insulation in locations where the thermal shorts are most critical. Although energy efficiency is usually the focus of such foreign cases because their stud application is mostly limited to low-rise residential buildings, both structural and thermal performance are taken into consideration in this study because these target middle-story buildings. A hybrid stud composed of steel and polymer was also developed. This hybrid stud, which is 150 SL in size, is made of a galvanized steel sheet (SGC58) and a glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) withepoxy bonding. A total of 32 specimens were manufactured. Its parameters comprise two types of connection detail,s: the thickness of steel (1.0mm and 1.2mm) and of the GFRP (4mm-4ply and 6mm-6ply), and the ratio of the length to the depth (L/D = 3, 6, 9, 12). Steel stud specimens with the same conditions were compared to the hybrid stud. The test revealed that in the case of the steel specimen with a thickness of 1.0mm, the maximum load of hybrid studs increased an average of 1.62 times comparedto that of the steel stud. In the case of the steel specimen with a thickness of 1.2mm, on the other hand, the average increase was 1.46times. All specimens showed full composite action until the collapse.

In 1980 and 1990's most of residential buildings were constructed with relatively low strength concrete of 18 MPa. And, columns were designed considering only vertical loads. In this study, compressive strength tests for low strength RC columns retrofitted by carbon fiber sheets were carried out. Carbon fiber sheet provides constructability and high tensile strength as well as good corrosion resistance characteristics. A pair of carbon sheets were wrapped with ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ angle with respect to longitudinal direction of RC column to increase structural capacity against axial and lateral load simultaneously. Strength and strain patterns and failure modes of specimens were analyzed and prediction equation of increased compressive strength of RC column confined by carbon fiber sheet was proposed based on regression analysis.

The objective of this study is to assess the strengthening effects of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) sheets such as Carbon fiber, Glass fiber, and PET(polyethylene terephthalate) on reinforced concrete flexural members. Variables of theoretical analysis are types of strengthening materials, material properties and amount of strengthening materials. A virtual flexural member without FRP sheets was created as a control specimen to understand the structural behavior of the non-strengthened specimen in terms of elastic and ultimate cross section. In total, 11 specimens including one non-strengthened and ten strengthened specimens were investigated. Various variables such as types of strengthening, strengthening properties, and amount of strengthening were studied to compare the behavior of the control specimen with those of strengthened specimens with regard to moment-curvature relationship. Results of theoretical analysis showed that the moment capacity of strengthened specimens was superior to that of the control specimen. However, the control specimen indicated the best ductility among all the specimens. As the amount of strengthening increased, flexural performance was improved. Furthermore, the results indicated that the ductile effect of members was affected by the ultimate strain of FRP sheets. The strengthening effect on the damaged member was similar to that on the non-damaged one since there was less than 10% difference in terms of flexural strength and ductility. Therefore, even if a damaged member is treated as non-damaged for analysis there is probably no noticeable difference.

Recently, numerous construction techniques for repairing and strengthening methods for above ground or air exposed concrete structure have been developed. However repairing and strengthening methods for underwater structural members under continuous loading, such as piers and steel piles need the further development. Therefore, this study develops an aqua epoxy, which can be used for repairing and strengthening of structural members located underwater. Moreover, using the epoxy material and strengthening fibers, a fiber reinforced composite sheet called Aqua Advanced FRP (AAF) for underwater usage is developed. To verify and to obtain properties of the material and the performance of AAF, several tests such as pull-off strength test, bond shear strength test, and chemical resistance test, were carried out. The results showed that the developed aqua epoxy does not easily dissolve in wet conditions and does not create any residual particle during hardening. In spite of underwater conditions, it showed the superior workability, because of the high viscosity over 30,000 cps and adhesion capacity over 2 MPa, which are nearly equivalent to those used in dry conditions. In case of the chemical resistance test, the developed aqua epoxy and composite showed the weight change of about 0.5~1.0%, which verifies the superior chemical resistance.

This study deals with the strengthening effect and behavioral characteristics of square concrete column wrapped with carbon FRP sheet. The increase in axial compression capacity comes from the confinement effect of wrapped CFRP sheet. Because of the shape of square concrete column, the confinement effect is smaller than that in circular column. For the experimental program, four parameters including the number of sheet, the size of column specimen, the aspect ratio, the corner rounding, and the transformation in shape from square to circular were selected to examine the strengthening effect and behavioral characteristics for each parameter. Experimental program comprised fifty five square concrete column specimens for different eleven types. The compression test results confirmed that the strengthening effect can be increased by the confinement of wrapped and bonded CFRP sheet. However, the confining effect was decreased with the increase of square column size. The other hand, the ductility in square concrete column greatly increased due to caging effect of CFRP sheet. The transformation in shape from square to circular considerably increased both the compressive strength and the ductility of the concrete column wrapped with CFRP sheet. In addition, using test results and existing studies, accuracy and reliability of the existing strength models for CFRP-confined square concrete are verified.
