This paper deals with the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams by means of thin fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) laminas. This study focuses on modeling of structural of concrete bonded FRP laminate in flexural bending members. Used computational equation is derived by relation of stress and strain. The section analysis is based on experimental observations of a linear strain distribution in the cross section until failure, and a multi-linear moment-deflection curve that is divided into four regions, each terminated by a similarly numbered point. The load-deflection relationship in each region is assumed to be linear. The present model is validated to compare wit the experiment of 4-point bending tests of R/C rectangular beams strengthened with CFRP laminates, and has well predicted the moment-displacement relationships of members.
Stress-strain models of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) confined concrete have been widely investigated; however, the existing load which is always supported by structures during the retrofitting phase, namely 'preload', has been neglected. Thus, preload effects should be clarified, providing insightful information for FRP retrofitting of structures with preload conditions. Towards this aim, experiments were performed for 27 cylinder concrete specimens with the diameter 150 mm and the height 300 mm. Three specimens were used to test the compressive strength of concrete to compute the preloads 20%, 30% and 40% of the average strength of these specimens. Other 24 specimens were divided into 2 groups; each group included 4 subgroups. Four subgroups were subjected to the above preloads and no preload, and were then wrapped by 2 FRP layers. Similar designation is applied to group 2, but wrapped by 3 FRP layers. All specimens were tested under axial compression to failure. Explosive failure is found to be the characteristic of specimens wrapped by FRP. Experimental results indicated that the preload decreases 12-13% the elastic and second stiffness of concrete specimens wrapped by 2 FRP layers. The stiffness reduction can be mitigated by the increase of FRP layers. Preload negligibly reduces the ultimate force and unclearly affects the ultimate displacement probably due to complicated cracks developed in concrete. A mechanism of preload effects is presented in the paper. Finally, to take into account preload effects, a modification of the widely used model of un-preload FRP confined concrete is proposed and the modified model demonstrated with a reasonable accuracy.
The shear failure modes of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) strengthened concrete beams are quite different to those of the beams strengthened with steel stirrups. When the beams are strengthened with larger amount of FRP composites, the beams normally fail in shear due to concrete crushing before the FRP reaches its rupture strain. In order to predict the shear strength of such beams, the actual rupture strain must be known. The equations previously reported in the technical literature adopt an effective reduction factor for the rupture strain. These equations may not be applicable to FRP strengthened RC beams that are beyond the experimental application limits, because most of these equations are empirical in nature. This paper presents the results of an analytical study on the performance of reinforced concrete beams externally wrapped with FRP composites and internally reinforced with conventional steel stirrups.
This study describes the basic concept and the applicability of Hybrid Reinforcement System using conventional steel reinforcing bars and Fiber Reinforced Polymer bars. The concrete bridge decks are assumed to be supported by beams and reinforced with two layers of reinforcing bars. In concrete bridge deck using HRS, the top tensile force for negative moment zone on beam supports is assumed to be resisted by FRP reinforcing bars, and the bottom tensile force for positive moment zone in the middle of hem supports is assumed to be resisted by conventional steel reinforcing bars, respectively. The FRP reinforcing bars are non-corrosive. Thus, the steel reinforcement is as far away as possible from the top surface of the deck and protected from intrusion of corrosive agent. HRS concrete bridge deck has sufficient ductility at ultimate state as the following reasons; 1) FRP bars have lower elastic modulus and higher ultimate strain than steel re-bars have, 2) FRP bars have lower ultimate strain if provided higher reinforcement ratio, 3) ultimate strain of FRP bars can be reduced if FRP bars are unbonded. Test results showed that FRP and HRS concrete slabs are not failed by FRP bar rupture, but failed by concrete compression in the range of ordinary reinforcement ratio. Therefore, in continuous concrete bridge deck using HRS, steel reinforcing bars for positive moment yield and form plastic hinge first and compressive concrete fail in the bottom of supports or in the top of the middle of supports last. Thus, bridge deck consumes significant inelastic strain energy before its failure.

Reinforced concrete (RC) structures strengthened with FRP materials would cause the loss of the reinforcing effect and the sudden failure of the structure due to the debonding of FRP. The debonding fracture strength of the FRP-strengthened concrete structures has been evaluated using the same strength method as applied in RC structures based on the debonding strain of FRP. However, the values of the FRP debonding strain are different according to design guidelines. Thus, this study carried out an experimental study on RC beams reinforced with GFRP and evaluated the debonding fracture strength of the strengthened beams from each design guideline. Since the debonding failure occurs prior to reaching the ultimate value of concrete compressive strain, this study accounts for the nonlinear stress distribution of concrete. This study also proposed equations that can evaluate the debonding strength of GFRP-strengthened RC beams with similar safety to the ultimate flexural strength of non-strengthened RC beams.
This paper presents the flexural behavior and strengthening effect of reinforced concrete beams bonded with carbon FRP plate. Parameters involved in this experimental study were plate bond length and sheet web anchorage length. Test beams were strengthened with FRP plate on the soffit and anchored with FRP sheet on the web. In general, strengthened beams with no web anchorage were failed by concrete cover failure along the longitudinal reinforcement. On the other hand, strengthened beams with web anchorage were finally failed by delamination shear failure within concrete after breaking of CFRP sheet wrapping around web. The ultimate load and deflection of strengthened beams increased with an increased bond length of FRP plate. Also, the ultimate load and deflection increased with an increased anchorage length of FRP sheet. Particularly, the strengthened beams with web anchorage maintained high ultimate load resisting capacity until very large deflection. The shape of strain distribution of CFRP plate along beam was very similar to that of bending moment diagram. Therefore, an assumption of constant shear stress in shear span could be possible in the analysis of delamination shear stress of concrete. In the case of full bond length, the ultimate resisting shear stress provided by concrete and FRP sheet Increased with an increase of web anchorage length. In the resisting shear force, a portion of the shear force was provided by FRP anchorage sheet.
The proposed model can predict the compressive behaviors of concrete confined with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jacket. To model confining concrete by FRP jackets, the hypoelasticity-based constitutive law of concrete In tri-axial stress states has been presented. The increment of strength of concrete has been determined by the failure surface of concrete in tri-axial states, and its corresponding peak strain is computed by the strain enhancement factor that is proposed in the present study, Therefore, the newly proposed model is a load-dependent confinement model of concrete wrapped by FRP jackets to compare the previous models which are load-independent confinement models. The behavior of FRP jackets has been modeled using the mechanics of orthotropic laminated composite materials in two-dimension. The developed model is implemented into the incremental analysis of compressive tests. The verification study with several different experiments shows that the model is able to adequately capture the behavior of the compression test by including better estimations of the axial responses as well as the lateral response of FRP-confined concrete cylinders.
In the present study, a unified shear design method was developed to evaluate the shear strength of concrete beams with and without FRP shear reinforcement. The contributions of FRP and concrete on shear strength were defined separately. By comparing the current design method calculated results with the existing test results, it was found that Triantafillou model shows a reliable prediction of FRP effective strain and FRP shear strength contributions. The concrete shear strength contribution was defined by the strain-based shear strength model developed in the previous study. The shear strength of concrete compression zone was evaluated based on the material failure criteria of the concrete subjected to the compressive normal and shear stresses. The proposed strength model was verified by comparing its prediction results to prior test results. The comparisons showed that the proposed method accurately predicts the strengths of the test specimens for both FRP shear reinforced and unreinforced concrete beams.

In recent years, many efforts have steadily been allocated to develop a new deck system in terms of its materials and structures in order to make up for the shortcomings of reinforced concrete deck. This study implemented and analyzed the verification for concrete composite beam with perfobond FRP as a permanent formwork and the tensile reinforcement, using non-linear finite element analysis program. Approximately 8-15% difference of ultimate failure load between numerical and experimental results were found and showed a similar figure of strain distribution in failure state.
This paper presents a tri-uniform bond stress model for predicting the lap splice strength of reinforcing bar at the critical bond splitting failure. The proposed bond distribution model consists of three zones, namely, splitting zone, post-splitting zone and yielding zone. In each zone, the bond stress is assumed to be constant. The models for bond strength in each zone are adopted from previous studies. Combining the equilibrium, strain-slip relation and the bond strength model in each zone, the steel stress-slip model can be derived, which can be used in the nonlinear frame analysis of the column. The proposed model is applied to derive explicit equations for predicting the strength of the lap splice strengthened by fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) in both elastic and post-yield ranges. For design purpose, a procedure to calculate the required FRP thickness and the number of FRP sheets is also presented. A parametric investigation was conducted to study the relation between lap splice strength and lap splice length, number and thickness of FRP sheets and the ratio of concrete cover to bar diameter. The study shows that the lap splice strength can be enhanced by increasing one of these parameters: lap splice length, number or thickness of FRP sheets and concrete cover to bar diameter ratio. Verification of the model has been conducted using experimental data available in literature.
