In recent years, the use of FRP composites to repair and strengthen existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures has been widely used. When the columns of existing RC structures are wrapped with FRP composites, the core concrete of such columns is confined not only by the FRP composites but also by the existing steel reinforcing ties (or spirals). Therefore, it is necessary to understand correctly the compressive response of concrete confined with both steel spirals and FRP composites in order to predict the behavior of such RC columns. This paper proposes a model to predict the compressive stress-strain curves of concrete confined with FRP and steel reinforcing ties.

This paper investigates experimentally the confining effect, strengthening capacity and rebound rate of sprayed Fiber-Reinforced-Polymer (SFRP). From the method, resin and chopped fibers are sprayed separately from the nozzle with high pressure, and then they are attached to the concrete surface, so structure could be repaired. To evaluate the strengthening effect of sprayed FRP, cylindrical specimens and beam specimens were strengthening with SFRP. As main material of FRP, glass fiber and polyester resin are used. To investigate the optimum condition of sprayed FRP, the effects of fiber length, coating thickness, fiber volume ratio and concrete strength were examined. Capacities of sprayed FRP method were also compared to the FRP sheet method. In case of the sprayed FRP, rebound rate is important parameter considering economical efficiency and constructibility, so rebound rate of was discussed. From the test results, optimum conditions of sprayed FRP were determined. SFRP method showed superior strengthening capacities than FRP sheet method.

In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the reinforced concrete beam using strengthening materials (embedded FRP rod, metal fittings) in existing reinforced concrete buildings. Seven reinforced concrete beams comprised of retrofitted embedded FRP rod (BCR series), embedded FRP rod with metal fittings (BCR-AC series), and standard specimen (BSS) were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. Design parameters of test specimens were amount of embedded FRP rod and metal fittings. The test results showed that the maximum load carrying capacity of specimens with embedded FRP rod (BCR series) and embedded FRP rod with metal fittings (BCR-AC series) increased by 21~55% and 21~63%, respectively, in comparison with the standard specimen BSS. BCR series test specimens failed by the adhesion slip and concrete cover separation. BCR-AC series test specimens failed by the adhesion slip due to the confining effect of metal fittings.

Three series of 36 short circular columns confined by wraps, full shells and partial shells were tested by varying the thickness of GFRP laminates. An assessment of the effectiveness of the existing models on confinement of concrete columns with FRP was made for present tests. Test results indicated significant increases in strength and deformability compared with those in unconfined concrete, particularly warp and full shell confinement. Existing predictive equations for peak strength and strain of confined concrete showed a large scatter and varied considerably, resulting from the realistic fracture strains of FRP nor considered.

There is a growing range of applications for concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) member because of its superior performance. But a CFT member may be uneconomical or has weight problems because it is fully filled with concrete. In this study, a new type of member, called internally confined hollow (ICH) CFT member, was developed to solve the high cost and weight problems of the CFT member. To determine stress-strain model of the concrete in an ICH CFT column, possible failure modes of an ICH CFT column were suggested and confining pressure was derived from equilibriums for each failure mode. From the derived equations, a computer program was coded and parametric studies were performed for some examples. Analytical results showed that internally confined concrete has enhanced strength and ductility compared with those of unconfined or biaxially confined concrete.

The bridge columns with lap-splice reinforcements in earthquake suffered a brittle bond-slip failure due to deterioration of the lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcements without developing its flexural capacity or ductility. In this case, such a brittle failure can be controlled by the seismic retrofit using FRP wrapping. The retrofitted columns using FRP wrapping showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect. This paper presents the circumferential confinement effect of existing circular bridge pier strengthened with FRP wrapping for poor lap-splice details. The effects on the confinement of FRP wrapping, such as gap lengths between footing and FRP, fiber orientations, and thicknesses of FRP, were investigated by quasi-static experiments.

Columns are one of the most critical parts of a structural system subjected to earthquake excitations. In this regard, extensive experimental studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapping on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. Among them, many studies focused on the behavior of circular or square RC columns strengthened with CFRP or GFRP sheets. Since the cross-sectional shape affects confinement by FRP wrapping, its strengthening effect and final damage pattern may differ with shapes. In this study, a series of cyclic tests was conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of rectangular reinforced concrete columns strengthened with basalt-based fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) sheets and composite fiber panels. The result shows that the effect of strengthening is not significant, and it implies a little increase of confinement by BFRP sheets and composite fiber panels, which is considered partly due to the cross-sectional shape of the columns.

In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the reinforced concrete beam using hybrid retrofitting with two materials (groove and embedding FRP rod, CFRP sheet) in existing reinforced concrete buildings. Seven reinforced concrete beams, retrofitted groove and embedding FRP rod (NER series) and groove and embedding FRP rod with CFRP sheet (NERL series), and standard specimen (NBS) were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. Design parameters of test specimens are the amount of groove and embedding FRP rod and lapping CFRP sheet. Test results showed that the maximum load carrying capacity of specimens with groove and embedding FRP rod and groove and embedding FRP rod with CFRP sheet (NERL series) were increased the by 12~46% and 22~77% respectively in comparison with the standard specimen NBS. Test specimens NER series were failed with the adhesion slip and concrete cover separation. And test specimens NERL series were failed with the adhesion slip due to the confining effect of lapping CFRP sheet.
In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate and improve the seismic performance of reinforced concrete beam-column joint regions using strengthening materials (steel plate, carbon fiber sheet, and embedded carbon fiber rod) in existing reinforced concrete buildings. Six specimens of retrofitted beam-column joints are constructed using various retrofitting materials and tested for their retrofit performances. Specimens designed by retrofitting the beam-column joint regions (LBCJ series) of existing reinforced concrete building showed a stable mode of failure and an increase in load-carrying capacity due to the effect of crack control at the time of initial loading and confinement from retrofitting materials during testing. Specimens of LBCJ series, designed by the retrofitting of FRP in reinforecd beam-column joint regions increased its maximum load carrying capacity by 26~50% and its energy dissipation capacity by 13.0~14.4% when compared to standard specimen of LBCJC with a displacement ductility of 4.

In the steel-free bridge concrete deck, steel straps are generally used instead of conventional steel rebar while laterally restrained in the perpendicular direction to the traffic in order fir the arching effect of concrete deck. In this paper, the minimum amount of FRP bar is to be suggested based on the structural strength, crack propagation, stress level and others in order to control cracks. As a result of laboratory tests, the structural strength of deck with 0.15 percentage of steel strap showed improved structural strength including ductility. The long-term serviceability of steel strap deck with FRP bar proved to satisfy the requirements and to be structurally stable while showing the amount of crack and residual vertical displacement within the allowable limits after two million cyclic loadings. The structural failure of RC bridge deck is generally caused from the punching shear rather than moment. Therefore, the ultimate load at failure could be estimated using the shear strength formula in the two-way slab based on ACI and AASHTO criteria. However the design criteria tend to underestimate the shear strength since they don't consider the arching effects and nonlinear fracture in bridge deck with lateral confinement. In this paper, an equation to estimate the punching shear strength of steel strap deck is to be developed considering the actual failure geometries and effect of lateral confinement by strap while the results are verified in accordance with laboratory tests.
