  • In the present study, a unified shear design method was developed to evaluate the shear strength of concrete beams with and without FRP shear reinforcement. The contributions of FRP and concrete on shear strength were defined separately. By comparing the current design method calculated results with the existing test results, it was found that Triantafillou model shows a reliable prediction of FRP effective strain and FRP shear strength contributions. The concrete shear strength contribution was defined by the strain-based shear strength model developed in the previous study. The shear strength of concrete compression zone was evaluated based on the material failure criteria of the concrete subjected to the compressive normal and shear stresses. The proposed strength model was verified by comparing its prediction results to prior test results. The comparisons showed that the proposed method accurately predicts the strengths of the test specimens for both FRP shear reinforced and unreinforced concrete beams.

  • The test results of high-strength concrete beam specimens, which have various combinations of different types of flexural reinforcement and short fibers, were compared with the prediction results of codes, guidelines and models proposed by researchers. The theoretical calculation based on the ultimate strength method of the KCI and ACI Code underestimated the ultimate moments of FRP bar-reinforced beams without fibers. The models proposed by ACI 544.4R and Campione predicted the ultimate moment capacities inaccurately for the FRP bar-reinforced beam with steel fibers, because these models do not consider the increased ultimate compressive strain of fiber reinforced concrete. Bischoff's deflection model predicted the service load deflections reasonably well, while the deflection model of ACI Committee 440 underestimated the deflection of FRP bar-reinforced beams. Because the ACI 440 expression, used to predict member deflection, cannot directly apply to the beams reinforced with different types of reinforcing bars, an alternative method to estimate the deflections of beams with different types of reinforcing bars using the ACI 440 expression was proposed. In addition, Bischoff's approach for computing deflection was extended to include deflection after yielding of the steel reinforcement in the beams reinforced with steel and FRP bars simultaneously.

  • Strength method for determining nominal moment capacity of reinforced concrete members is also assumed to be suitable for strengthened members with FRP system. If the internal tensile forces of the strengthened member from steel and FRP is insufficient, the FRP system strain might become greater than its ultimate tensile strain which makes the strength method a contradiction and unapplicable. The experimental results of 27 strengthened beams with carbon fiber sheets which have relatively lower tensile forces from steel and FRP show that not only concrete compressive strain is lower than 0.003 but also measured ultimate moment was lower than nominal moment using the strength method.

  • As increasing number of large-size earthquake around Korean peninsula, many interests have been focused to the earthquake strengthening of existing structures. The brittle fracture of Non-seismic designed columns lead to full collapse of the building. In the past, cross-sectional extension method, a steel plate reinforcing method and fiver-reinforced method are applied to Seismic Rehabilitation Technique mainly. However, the reinforcement methods have drawbacks that induce physical damage to structures, large space, long duration time. So, in this study, performance evaluation of previously developed FRP seismic reinforcement which do not induce physical damage and short duration time was enforced. The specimens were constructed with 80% downscale. FRP seismic reinforcement are manufactured of glass fiber or aluminum plate with holes and glass fiber. From the experiment results, seismic performance of specimens which reinforced with FRP seismic reinforcement were increased.

  • The shear failure modes of FRP strengthened concrete beams are quite different to those of the beams strengthened with steel stirrups. When the beams are externally wrapped with FRP composites, many beams fail in shear due to concrete crushing before the FRP reaches its rupture strain. In order to predict the shear strength of such beams, the effective strain of the FRP must be blown. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the performance of reinforced concrete beams externally wrapped with FRP composites and infernally reinforced with steel stirrups. The main parameters of the tests were FRP reinforcement ratio, the type of fiber material (carbon or glass) and configuration (continues sheets or strips). The experimentally observed effective strain of the FRP was compared with the strain calculated using a proposed method.

  • Five concrete compressive stress-strain models have been analyzed to check the validity of the strength method for determining the nominal moment of strengthened members using commercially available computer language. The results show that the concrete stress-strain models do not influence on the flexural analysis. The moment of a strengthened member obtained from the flexural analysis at concrete compressive strain reaching 0.003 is well agreed with nominal moment using the strength method. The flexural analysis results show that when the steel reinforcement, FRP ratio, FRP failure strain, and concrete failure compressive strain are relatively lower, the strength method overestimates the flexural capacity of the strengthened members.

  • Recently, many researches have been conducted about reinforced concrete structures strengthened with FRP plates. In case of structures strengthened with FRP plates, the issue of premature debonding FRP plate has been raised through many previous researches. The purpose of this paper is what structural behavior and flexaural capacity of reinforced concrete beams which are strengthened for flexure is investigated about the using secondary ironware in the method of external bonded CFRP plate, and the method of near surface mounted CFRP-Rod. Also, in order to evaluate flexural capacity, experiments of the reinforced concrete beams with exteranl bonded CFRP plate and near surface mounted CFRP-Rod have been compared and investigated.

  • Rehabilitations of reinforced concrete(RC) structures using advanced fibre-reinfored plastic(FRP) composites has become very popular in last few years. Typical method of strengthening strategy using FRP composite is bonding the CFRP plate or sheet on the surface of existing concrete structures. Many researches, however, have shown that bonding FRP plate or sheet on the surface of concrete has tendancy to debond prematurely induced by stress concentrations at the end of the plate. In order for overcoming the premature failure, the filling-up method which places FRP-rod into the existing concrete sawing groove has been developed. Through filling-up test results, aims of this research is to investigate the efficiencies of the filling-up method and is to determine the availabilities of traditional flexural theories that has provided all over the world.

  • Aging and severe environments are major causes of damage in reinforced concrete (RC) structures such as buildings and bridges. Deterioration such as concrete cracks, corrosion of steel, and deformation of structural members can significantly degrade the structural performance and safety. Therefore, effective and easy-to-use methods are desired for repairing and strengthening such concrete structures. Various methods for strengthening and rehabilitation of RC structures have been developed in the past several decades. Recently, FRP composite materials have emerged as a cost-effective alternative to the conventional materials for repairing, strengthening, and retrofitting deteriorating/deficient concrete structures, by externally bonding FRP laminates to concrete structural members. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in predicting behavior of circular type concrete column retrofitted with FRP. To construct training and testing dataset, experiment results for the specimens which have different retrofit profile are used. Retrofit ratio, strength of existing concrete, thickness, number of layer, stiffness, ultimate strength of fiber and size of specimens are selected as input parameters to predict strength, strain, and stiffness of post-yielding modulus. These proposed ANFIS models show reliable increased accuracy in predicting constitutive properties of concrete retrofitted by FRP, compared to the constitutive models suggested by other researchers.

  • This study is to develop equations that consider the elastic modulus ratio of FRP bar and steel reinforcement, shear span to depth ratio, and flexural reinforcement ratio of FRP bar, to determine concrete shear strength of FRP reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement. As experimental parameters, 2 types of FRP bar, 3 types of shear span to depth ratio, and 3 types of flexural reinforcement were used. Experimental results for two of shear span to depth ratio were quoted from previous study to evaluate effect of shear span to depth ratio in more detail. Shear strength correction factors needed for evaluating concrete shear strength were proposed from regression analysis using above experimental results. Equations suggested from this study and other codes were examined and compared with 31 experimental results available in the literature. From this comparison, it could be known that the equation suggested from this study gives the most approaching result to experimental results.
