  • The cost of repairing the deterioration of concrete structures due to corrosion of the reinforcement steel has been the prominent figure in the maintenacne of the reinforced-concrete infrastructures. As an alternative material to steel reinforcement, the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bar in concrete is being actively studied for the high resistance of chemical environment and high strength to weight ratio properties of FRP. However, there remain various aspects of FRP properties that still need to be studied before the standard design criteria can be established. One of the imminent issues is the bond between FRP and concrete. In this study, the bond-behavior of FRP bars in concrete is investigated via the pullout test with three varying parameters: surface condition of FRP bars, concrete compression strength, and cyclic loading patterns. As a result of experiment, the bond strength of GFRP increased with the concrete compression strength increasing and decreased with applying cyclic load.

  • The corrosion of steel rebars has been the major cause of reinforced concrete deterioration. FRP(Fiber-reinforced polymer) rebar has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. However, FRP rebar is prone to deteriorate due to other degradation mechanisms than those for steel. The high alkalinity of concrete, for instance, is a possible degradation source. Therefore, the USA, Japan, Canada, UK. etc are using environmental reduction factor. Although difference design guidelines were drawn in many, including USA, Japan, Canada, UK etc, recommendations and coefficients that could take into account the long-term behavior of FRP reinforcement were not well defined. This study focuses on recommendation of environmental reduction factor of FRP rebar. Environment reduction factor were decided using durability test result. FRP rebars were subjected to twelve type of exposure conditions including alkaline solution, acid solution, salt solution and deionized water etc. The water absorption behavior was observed by means of simple gravimetric measurements and durability properties were investigated by performing tensile, compressive and short beam tests. Based on the experimental result, environmental reduction factor of hybrid FRP rebar(A), and (C) and CFRP rebar was decided as 0.85. Also, hybrid FRP rebar(B) and GFRP rebar were decided as 0.7 for the environmental reduction factor

  • Concrete columns strengthening effect due to FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) confinement depends on the elastic modulus of the FRP. This study analyzes the retrofitting effect of FRP confinements according to elastic modulus of FRPs using the existing data and suggests a practical model to assess the strengthening effect. This study subdivides the FRP elastic modulus into three parts based on normal concrete and steel elastic modulus. The slope and the y-axis intersection seem to increase with increasing FRP elastic modulus. In addition, the strengthening effect does not develop up to some amount of FRP confinement having relatively smaller elastic modulus than the compressive elastic modulus of concrete. In this case, a linear model to assess the strengthening effect is hard to be used. Thus, this study suggests that the FRP jackets having 2 times larger elastic modulus than that of concrete are recommended to be used for retrofit of concrete and that a linear model can be applied for the case. The suggested model shows nearly the same result regardless to the restraint of the y-axis intersection. This has been observed at the model of steel confinement and, thus, is a reliable result.

  • New strengthening method based on Near Surface Mounted technique (NSM) is suggested, which can overcome the brittle nature of failure inherent to those reinforced concrete beams strengthened with FRP composite materials. The suggested technique secures ductile failure of reinforced concrete beams by having the strengthening Hybrid FRP rebars unbonded in parts. Experiments were performed in order to compare structural behaviors of strengthened beams with and without unbending along the Hybrid FRP rebars. Test results showed that only those beams strengthened by partially unbonded NSM failed in ductile manner. Theoretical expressions were derived for the minimum unbonded length of Hybrid FRP rebars with which ultimate strength of the reinforced concrete beam with partially unbonded NSM could be reached. The suggested partially unbonded NSM technique is expected to significantly improve the structural behavior of the strengthened beam with FRP composite materials.

  • Recently, in retrofit of RC structures using FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer), researches about Near-Surface-Mounted Rertofit (NSMR) method have been widely performed. In NSMR, FRP bar is normally inserted in the slit formed in the cover concrete and then bonded by using epoxy mortar. In this paper, the bond characteristic of NSMR using FRP plate instead of bar was studied experimentally. Fracture behavior is observed from bond test using the parameters of embedment length, shear key, and FRP plate layer. In addition, an equation to predict the splitting strength of NSMR using FRP is proposed using the test result. The results showed that when the longer embedment length and more layers of FRP are used, the higher bond strength is achieved. There was a good co-relationship between the test and calculated results using the proposed equation.

  • This paper presents the flexural behavior and strengthening effect of reinforced concrete beams bonded with carbon FRP plate. Parameters involved in this experimental study were plate bond length and sheet web anchorage length. Test beams were strengthened with FRP plate on the soffit and anchored with FRP sheet on the web. In general, strengthened beams with no web anchorage were failed by concrete cover failure along the longitudinal reinforcement. On the other hand, strengthened beams with web anchorage were finally failed by delamination shear failure within concrete after breaking of CFRP sheet wrapping around web. The ultimate load and deflection of strengthened beams increased with an increased bond length of FRP plate. Also, the ultimate load and deflection increased with an increased anchorage length of FRP sheet. Particularly, the strengthened beams with web anchorage maintained high ultimate load resisting capacity until very large deflection. The shape of strain distribution of CFRP plate along beam was very similar to that of bending moment diagram. Therefore, an assumption of constant shear stress in shear span could be possible in the analysis of delamination shear stress of concrete. In the case of full bond length, the ultimate resisting shear stress provided by concrete and FRP sheet Increased with an increase of web anchorage length. In the resisting shear force, a portion of the shear force was provided by FRP anchorage sheet.

  • The main purpose of this study is to develop a sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method, which is a new technique for strengthening the existing concrete structures by mixing one of the carbon or glass chopped fibers and one of the epoxy or vinyl ester resins with high-speed compressed air in open air and randomly spraying the mixture onto the concrete surface. At present, the sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method using the epoxy resin has not been fully discussed. In order to investigate the material property of the sprayed FRP, this study carried out tensile tests of the material specimens, which were changed with the combinations of various variables including the length of chopped fiber and the mixture ratio of chopped fiber and resin. These variables were set to have the equal material strength, compared with that of one layer of the FRP sheet. As a result, the optimal length of glass and carbon chopped fibers was fumed out to be 38 mm, and the optimal mixture ratio between chopped fiber and resin was also turned out to be 1 : 2 from each variable. And also, the thickness of the sprayed FRP to have the equal strength to one layer of the FRP sheet was finally calculated. In is study, a series of experiments were carried out to evaluate the strengthening effects of flexural beams, shear beams and damaged beams strengthened with the sprayed FRP method, respectively. The results revealed that the strengthening effects of the flexural and shear specimens were reasonably similar to those of the FRP sheet, and the developed Sprayed FRP technique is able to be used as a strengthening scheme of existing RC building.

  • Shear behavior of concrete beams reinforced with steel and/or FRP bar is studied through experimental tests. Experimental parameters includes the mechanical properties of reinforcements in shear and bending, and the ratio of shear reinforcement. The validity of the modified truss analogy, that has been widely accepted as a basis for the practical shear design of concrete beams, has been examined thoroughly by analyzing experimental results. The experimental results indicate that the modified truss analogy cannot be directly adopted to the shear problem of concrete beams reinforced with FRP bar.

  • This study carried out shear experiment for concrete deep beam reinforced FRP(Fiber Reinforced Polymers) bar to investigate shear strength of deep beam. The test conducted for 15 specimens, and the variables were shear span-to-depth ratio, reinforcement ratio, effective depth, reinforcement components of shear strength. crack, deflection are investigated based on shear experimental. We compared shear strength using ACI 318-08 STM with proposed equations that considered arching action according to shear span-to-depth ratio. Consequently shear strength of deep beam reinforced FRP bar presented higher shear strength than steel bar. ACI STM's predictions are better accurate than other predicting equations.
