A Study on the Development of FRBR Algorithm for KORMARC Bibliographic Record (KORMARC 서지레코드의 FRBR 알고리즘 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to development an algorithm for FRBR implementation(functional requirements for bibliographic records), analyzing KORMARC bibliographic records by work types. For this purpose, it was utilized analyzing home and foreign case studies including OCLC and LC's algorithm. Analyzing the experimental data from the Korean National Library's bibliographic records, it was extracted from identifying elements by FRBR's four bibliographic entities. To cluster a related works by work-set, the algorithm was designed to construct the authorized access points as a combination of an author name and a title from the record. I suggested that it should be wholly improved a quality of existing bibliographic records and level of data input to development a FRBR algorithm in Korean libraries.

  • The purposes of this study are to explore FRBR utilities such as work clustering and expression clustering and problems of application of the FRBR by developing work and expression clustering algorithm and implementing it into cataloging system, and to suggest new cataloging rules for FRBR and guideline of MARC description to improve FRBR work clustering. FRBR was suggested by necessitation of collocation function of bibliographic records according to increase of searching materials and multi-version materials, but FRBRization has some problems such as imperfect conversion of bibliographic records to FRBR records and inappropriateness of current cataloging rules for FRBR. Bibliographic records must be processed by FRBR algorithm to construct FRBRized system, but bibliographic records and current cataloging rules couldn't perfectly support FRBRization. Therefore cataloging rules and guidelines of MARC description for FRBR are needed. For constructing FRBRized cataloging system in Korea, it is needed to find problems and solution through FRBR practical application such as developing FRBR algorithm and applying it to cataloging records.

  • FRBR, as is new conceptual model of bibliography based on entity-relation model, direct to revision of AACR. OCLC and other bibliographic utility develop algorithm that cluster relative bibliographic records automatically, which were derived from one original work, and web-based prototype for FRBR browsing. But the state of domestic research level stay at conceptual reconsideration of FRBR model.7his study focused on analyzing FRBR algorithm and application of KORMARC database.

  • This study examines the application of the FRBR model to an integrated KORMARC format using music materials. To do this, first, we analysed an integrated KORMARC format as well as a KORMARC format for audiovisual materials and then based on its analysis results, constructed an algorithm that allows the transformation from KORMARC to FRBR. Second, we used the algorithm to see whether it fits to the existing KORMARC database. Three suggestions were proposed to support the application of the FRBR model on existing integrated KORMARC library catalogues. This study results can be used not only to improve digital library interfaces but also as basic data in revising cataloging rules for the adaptation of the FRBR model.

  • This study intends to make a comprehensive investigation on an application of FRBR model to KORMARC records. To the end, issues associated with FRBR implementation are analyzed, and automatic algorithms to covert bibliographic records into FRBR model are examined thoroughly. On the basis of it. this study implemented four-level hierarchical bibliographic structure of FRBR model using existing KORMARC records. 161 sample records for an experiment were selected from Korea national library. The work chosen as sample records was "Hamlet." Results suggest that considerable difficulties would be encountered in the process of FRBRizing KORMARC records.

Designing a FRBR Work Grouping Algorithm of Bibliographic Records using a Role Term Dictionary of Authors (저자역할용어사전 구축 및 저작군집화에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the issues resulted from the process of grouping KORMARC records using FRBR WORK concept and to suggest a new method. The previous studies did not sufficiently address the criteria or processes for identifying representative authors of records and their derivatives. Therefore, our study focused on devising a method of identifying the representative author when there are multiple contributors in a work. The study developed a method of identifying representative authors using an author role dictionary constructed by extracting role-terms from the statement of responsibility field (245). We also designed another way to group records as a work by calculating similarity measures of authors and titles. The accuracy rate of WORK grouping was the highest when blank spaces, parentheses, and controling processes were removed from titles and the measured similarity rates of authors and titles were higher than 80 percent. This was an experiment study where we developed an author-role dictionary that can be utilized in selecting a representative author and measured the similarity rate of authors and titles in order to achieve effective WORK grouping of KORMARC records. The future study will attempt to devise a way to improve the similarity measure of titles, incorporate FRBR Group 1 entities such as expression, manifestation and item data into the algorithm, and a method of improving the algorithm by utilizing other forms of MARC data that are widely used in Korea.

A Study on the Display Considerations of RDA Resource Type (RDA 자원유형 디스플레이를 위한 고려사항에 관한 연구)

  • This study was to find the display considerations of RDA resource type - content type, media type, and carrier type. The Literature review, the case study, and the survey were used as the research method. 5 display strategies were suggested in this study. First, content and carrier types were better displayed than all 3 types of RDA resources. Second, two kinds of algorithm should be considered for RDA resource icon display. One was the combination of the terms of carrier types plus content types icon. The other was the combination of carrier types icon and content types icon in which the terms reflecting types must be included. Third, the subfield of 33x must be used for the paired display of content type and carrier type of multi-types resources. Fourth, in brief display, resource type icon was better positioned on the left and upper side and in detailed display, resource types were better located in description area. Fifth, 'format' was used as display indication phrase. This study would contribute to the design for the resource display by suggesting the practical display considerations of RDA resource type.
