  • Dental composite resin is a kind of the particle - reinforced composite material, and is widely used in recent dental restoration of anterior and posterior tooth region. The purpose of this study was to investigate the fracture behaviour according to volume fractions and external findings of the filler particles for better interpretation of the fracture characteristics of posterior dental composite resins by analytic method of fracture mechanics. The plane strain fracture toughness($K_{IC}$) and Acoustic Emission were determined with three - point bending test using the single edge notch specimen according to the ASTM - E399, and its analyzed data was compared with filler volume fractions derived from the standard ashing test and scanning electron fractographs of each specimen including the unfilled experimental resin as a control. The results were that the value of fracture toughness of the composite resin material was in the range from 0.85 MPa$\sqrt{m}$ to 1.60 MPa$\sqrt{m}$ and was higher than the value of the unfilled experimental resin, and the fracture behaviours dervied from Acoustic Emission analysis show prominent differences according to the volume fraction and the size of filler particles used in each composite resin. The degree of resistance against crack propagation seems to be increase and the fractographs demonstrate the high degree of surface roughness and irregularity according with the increase of fracture toughness value.

  • Fracture toughness of rock materials, which generally violate the fundamental assumptions of LEFM, often depends on the specimen size and test method employed. Hence, a standardized procedure for testing and data interpretation for determining fracture toughness of rock materials is required. Special attention has been given by the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) to the difficulties in obtaining true fracture mechanics parameters for the wide variety of rock materials. • This paper is to evaluate fracture characteristics of API 2W Gr.50 TMCP steel weldment typically applied for offshore structures, with the focus on the influence of heat input arising from flux cored arc welding. Based on the results and insights developed from this study, it is found that the toughness for both CTOD and impact exhibits a tendency to decrease as the weld heat input increases. The reheated zone of weldmetal exhibit lower hardness than solidified zone and microstructure that are liable to affect the toughness are acicular ferrite and martensite-austenite constituents (M-A). In particular, M-A is a more effective micro-phase for CTOD toughness than impact toughness.

  • SG-365 steel is an important material and used for manufacturing a pressure vessel which the gas piping. In this investigation, the elastic plastic fracture toughness of this material is evaluated by the an unloading compliance method according to the ATM E813-97 method on the smooth and side groove 1CT specimens. The effect of smooth and side groove is studied on the elastic plastic fracture toughness. The side grooved specimen is very useful in estimation of the $J_IC. Because it is much easier than the smooth specimen to the onset of the ductile tearing by the R curve method. Besides, it improves the accuracy of toughness values, decreases the scattering of them and tunneling and shear lip by the side groove.

  • The investigation of cure kinetics, morphology, and fracture toughness studies on epoxy resin/amine terminated PEI/Anhydride system were performed by differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. Modified autocatalystic kinetics model was applied by isothermal scan test. The fracture toughness for the neat epoxy resin was 2.15 MPa m0.5 and the fracture toughness was improved 45% as neat epoxy resin system. The generation of secondary phase of AT-PEI was observed and its size was grown up by increasing contents of PEI.

  • In order to Improve the fracture toughness of epoxy resin system, liquid chloroprene rubber(LCR) and liquid butadiene rubber (LBR) which have hydroxy group were used in the brittle epoxy system. Mechanical and toughness characterization of the modified epoxy resins were investigated as a function of liquid rubbers content. Epoxy resins modified with both of the liquid rubbers showed complete phase-separation microstructure : In all of the LCR content, it was observed that the domain size of LCR dispersed in the epoxy matrix ranging from $2{\mu}m\;to\;5{\mu}m$. It was found that fracture toughness, $K_{ic}$, of the modified LCR system was enhanced continuously as increasing LCR content. However around 10phr of LBR system showed maximum fracture toughness. Specifically, when BPA add to the modified LCR system, thermal and mechanical properties increased than neat epoxy. At the same time, fracture toughness was enhanced.

  • In this paper, an investigation was performed on the dynamic interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP(carbon filber rein-forcement plastics). Specimens used in this experiments are CF/PEEK laminated plates. In this experiments, Split Hopkin-sons Bar(SHPE) tes was apply to dynamic and notched flexure test. The model II fracture toughness of each unidirectional CFRP was estimated by the analyzed deflection of the specimen and J-integral with the measured impulsive load and reac-tions at the supported points. As an experimental results the vibration amplitude of [$0^{\circ}_10 /F_4 0^{\circ}_10 $] j-aminates appear more than that of [$0^{\circ}_10 /F_2 0^{\circ}_10 $ laminates for the j-integral and displacement velocity at a measuring point. Also, it is thought that the dynamic fracture toughness of two kind specimen(CF/PEEK) with the crease of displacement velocity becomes great at a measuring point with in the range of measurement.

  • The instrumented Charpy impact test is generally used to evaluate the dynamic fracture toughness for varying engineering materials. However, the test is known to be difficult to evaluate the dynamic fracture toughness for very brittle materials because of the small crack initiation load. To evaluate the dynamic fracture toughness of verybrittle materials, it is necessary to develop a load sensitive instrumented tup. In this study, a polymer tup, which has small Young's modulus, is used for the instrumented Charpyimpact test and a proper testing method is developed. The results show that the developed method can measure rapidly changing loads from the moment of contact between the tup and the specimen to dynamic crack initation of the very brittle materials.

  • Effect of additive composition on fracture toughness of in situ-toughened $SiC-Si_3N_4$ composites was investigated for five different additive compositions. The highest toughness $(6.4MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2})\;in\;SiC-Si_3N_4$ composites investigated herein was obtained when an Y-Mg-Si-Al-O-N oxynitride glass was used as a sintering additive. The improvement in fracture toughness was produced by enhanced bridging and deflection by $Si_3N_4$ grains.

  • The fracture toughness of 2.25Cr-1Mo cast steel (SA217-WC9) samples which were taken from the check valves of feed water piping of Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant(KSNPP) was measured by Master Curve method. The measured $T_0$ reference temperature of SA217-WC9 steel was $-30^{\circ}C$. The obtained $T_0$ was compared to the derived value from Charpy impact test data following to SINTEP procedure. The heat-to-heat variation in fracture toughness of SA217-WC9 steel was observed. It was found that the low toughness of a heat of SA217-WC9 steel was attributed to the coarse MnS inclusion originated by high sulfur content as the results of microanalyses.
