The purpose of this study is to analyze impacts of the forest fragmentation caused by development project. Furthermore, to investigate the applicability of landscape indicator when 'Feasibility of forest land conversion to other use' is conducted. The study site was consisted of golf course development and road construction. It is to compare before and after impacts of areal and linear development. As for the methods, selecting landscape indices, clustered into 3 Categories have been utilized. Category I was concerned with 'size of forest patches', II as 'shape of forest patches', and III as 'Core Area' These were calculated by FRAGSTATS, the program for analyzing fragmentation. The results showed that linear development caused more fragmented than areal development projects. Also, patch size, patch shape and core area are related to impacts of development, while Patch size decreased, patch shape and core area increased after development. Therefore, it is necessary to minimize the impacts of forest by considering fragmentation when development project is planned.
The materials for transmission line construction were transported by road which opened in mountainous areas until the mid 1990s, However, from the mid 1990s, as social interest in the environment standard increases, a cable way and helicopter transport methods of construction have been applied to minimize damage to the environment and to build an environmental friendly system. The current cable way method is a single cable way system which has a lower section base to load materials into a carriage and carry them to the tower construction site by use of an engine and a main rope. Then the carriage lowers itself via a slope between the tower construction site and the lower section base. The single cable way system has the demerits of site acquisition for the lower section base, forest felling when installing the wire rope, and it is not applicable to a even topology Also it has to be installed separately at each tower site. Accordingly, to carry materials without forest felling and regardless of slope, the chain cable way system was developed to provide materials for more than two towers consecutively by use of an engine carriage and winch.

As non-road mobile pollutants such as construction equipment are emerging as the main cause of air pollutants emission, construction equipment regulations are gradually strengthening. Research was conducted by correcting the emission coefficient to calculate and predict air pollutant emissions of construction equipment, but it did not reflect site variables such as field and equipment conditions that affect actual emissions. This study derived an Artificial Neural Network emission prediction model based on the actual emission data of excavators and trucks measured at the site and proposed a platform to predict the emission of air pollutants at the site according to the working size and conditions. Through this, it is possible to establish an eco-friendly process plan using a model from the construction plan.

This study is to trace the change of stream shape using the past series of aerial photographs, and to compare the land use changes of riparian area along the stream. For the Gyeongan national stream, aerial photographs of 1966, 1981 and 2000 were selected and ortho photographs were made with interior orientation and exterior orientation, respectively. As apparent changes of the stream, the consolidated reaches of stream with levee construction were straightened and their stream widths were widened. Especially the stream width of inlet part of Paldang lake was widened almost twice because of the rise of water level by dam construction in 1974. The land use maps (1966, 1981,2000) of riparian areas were also made, respectively and classified into 6 categories (water, forest, agricultural land, urban area, road, sandbar) by digitizing. The area of forest and agricultural land decreased and urban area increased as the stream maintenance was performed.

Forest disturbances including forest fire, insect pests and diseases, landslides, and forest conversion from 1976 to 2005 were investigated to trace the changes of major forest disturbance agents and their characteristics over time in accordance with changes in natural and social environment in South Korea. While the damaged area by insect pests and diseases continuously decreased for the past 30 years, damaged areas by forest fire and landslide were fluctuating through years. The interval of large forest fires has become shorter with increased tree volume. The precipitation between January and April were significantly correlated with large fire occurrences as Pearson's correlation coefficient -0.400 (P=0.029). The composition of major insect pests and diseases damaging Korean forests has been changed continuously, and become more diversified. While damages by pine caterpillar (Dendrolimus spectabilis) and pine needle gall midge (Thecodiplosis japonensis) decreased, damage by introduced pests has been more serious recently. The change of precipitation pattern that brought more localized heavy rain or powerful typhoon resulted in the recent increase in landslide areas. The major land uses to induce forest conversion have been changed, reflecting the changes in industrial structure in South Korea as agriculture and mining in 1970s, mining and golf ranges classified in pasture in 1980s, and road and housing construction in 1990s and 2000s. Changes in forest disturbance patterns in South Korea show that a country's industrial development is jointly working with global warming on forest stand dynamics. Altering energy structure and land use pattern induced by industrial development accumulates forest volume and reforms microenvironments on forest floor, interacting with climate change, inducing shorter interval of large forest fire and changes in major species composition of forest insect pests and diseases.
We investigated the habitat use of cranes, and suggested the proper way to protect and manage the cranes in Cheolwon Basin, which is the most important wintering ground of cranes in Korea. Field surveys were conducted in the wintering seasons from Nov. 1994 to Feb. 1995, and from Nov. 1997 to Feb. 1998. The habitat loss and environmental changes by the road construction and agricultural field rearrangement might have affected the distribution of the cranes. The distribution of cranes seemed to be related with the density of rice grains remained in rice paddies.
This study was carried out to investigate working time, performance, and to predict performance that related to the factor of forest road in earth work using excavator. It was found that the real working time was 503 minutes in a day. The ratio of real working time and allowance per total working time was approximately 85.7% and 14.3% individually. The rate of soil movement(Sm) to net working time was 38.6%, and earth cutting(Ec) was 32.5%. According to performance analysis, performance of earth work using excavator($0.8m^3$) in straight part was 1.4 times larger than curve part and rock work using excavator($0.8m^3$) which had breaker in straight was 9.1 times larger than earth work using excavator($0.8m^3$) which had bucket. Performance of earth work using excavator($1.0m^3$) was 1.3 times larger than using excavator($0.8m^3$) in straight and curve part. Working performance in earth work using excavator($0.8m^3$) was influenced by the conditions of radius of curve, width of roadway, slope gradient. It is not influenced by diameter and number of root stock.

This study was carried out to discuss how soils in the area planned for a forest road construction can be mechanically tested and practically applied. For this, 16 soil test samples from 8 plots(2 samples per plot) were used. The major tests are focused on unit weight before and after cut, water content, liquid and plastic limits, sieve and hydrometer analysis etc. The total unit weight(${\rho}_t$) before and after cut are $1.69g/cm^3$ and $1.19g/cm^3$, respectively. Their water contents are 21.0% and 20.5%. The coefficient of uniformity U and coefficient of curvature C obtained from sieve and hydrometer analysis are 125 and 0.42, which mean generally not well graded. On the soil classification by USCS, SM(silty sand or silt-sand mixed soil)is a Key soil, but it seems to be not good for fill material. From the standard proctor test are resulted $1.40{\pm}0.065g/cm^3$ for the unit weight(${\rho}$) in the nature and $1.88{\pm}0.049g/cm^3$ for the optimum proctor unit weight(${\rho}pr$) each. With this to say, it is necessary more powerful compaction work at earth filling, with which this soil reachs enough the ${\rho}pr$, and more earth.

In Korea, there has been no revegetation applicable standard for slopes formed by road construction work up to now, so revegetation work has been done using mostly foreign varieties in the manner of early revegetation. However, foreign varieties have some shortcomings; for example, they tend to be dried to death after construction work. Besides, due to the rift in the supporting soil, these revegetated varieties are often displaced from the slopes. Thus, the Ministry of Construction & Transportation on July, 2005 established revegetation standard on the slopes suited for the natural eco-system of Korea and organized positively recommending directions for using self-sewn plants growing near the slopes in overall consideration of soil, weather, regional conditions. The locations specified in this direction are the slopes at the road construction jobsite like the expressway, highways, and local roads. In addition, the Ministry's standard and directions stipulated that damaged slopes's natural environment and eco-system due to various road construction work should be restored, and thus a feeling of stability and pleasantness should be provided to road users as well. Also, the Ministry tried to select seed plants and revegetation measures suited for surrounding environment to put the environment-friendly slope revegetation measures into practice through the test revegetation work in order to prevent illegal construction practices and to improve the quality of revegetation. According to the direction, revegetation districts aimed at the slopes are divided into three ones in consideration of weather environment, regional environment, and forest environment as follows : national territory's core ecological green-land based district centering on the Taebaek Mountains; coastal ecosystem district including islands off the coast; inland eco-system district. The combination of revegetation plants according to environment revegetation districts, should be executed by dividing into herb-oriented type, woody plant colony type, and bio-species versatility restoration type, and the selection of seeding plants should be done in the presence of a supervisor and through test construction results and technology counseling from a specialist in natural eco-system restoration and revegetation measure seed combination standard according to environment revegetation districts. This direction will be executed in the manner of monitoring until the yea 2008 and 2009 it will be finalized and enforced on December, 2009.
