  • In this study, we developed Void Plywood Slab (VPS) that improved the shape of existing hollow materials. Its performance was evaluated through one-way flexural and one-way shear tests using the developed VPS. As a result of the one-way flexural performance tests of VPS, the yield load value for FPS series(longitudinal direction specimens with hollow materials) was approximately 97.5% compared to FPS-00(without hollow materials) specimen. The tests showed that the yield load was not much different. In addition, FNS series(transverse direction specimens with hollow materials) also represented about 97% of FPS-00 specimen. The one-way flexural performance was shown to have little impact from void materials. Therefore, it is confirmed that the presented system is applicable to the VPS to the slab design. The results of the one-way shear performance tests of VPS showed that it was about 92% compared to the SS-00(without hollow materials) specimen. These results were somewhat insufficient for the SS-00 specimen. Shear strength equation is expressed as the sum of shear force by concrete and shear force by reinforcement. However, in the case of void slab, it is believed that the concrete section has been deleted by the void material. However, the strength of the structure applied to the shear design, as with the flexural design, is also applied to the design based on the yield load value.

  • In conventional transportation problem (TP), all the parameters are always certain. But, many of the real life situations in industry or organization, the parameters (supply, demand and cost) of the TP are not precise which are imprecise in nature in different factors like the market condition, variations in rates of diesel, traffic jams, weather in hilly areas, capacity of men and machine, long power cut, labourer's over time work, unexpected failures in machine, seasonal changes and many more. To counter these problems, depending on the nature of the parameters, the TP is classified into two categories namely type-2 and type-4 fuzzy transportation problems (FTPs) under uncertain environment and formulates the problem and utilizes the trapezoidal fuzzy number (TrFN) to solve the TP. The existing ranking procedure of Liou and Wang (1992) is used to transform the type-2 and type-4 FTPs into a crisp one so that the conventional method may be applied to solve the TP. Moreover, the solution procedure differs from TP to type-2 and type-4 FTPs in allocation step only. Therefore a simple and efficient method denoted by PSK (P. Senthil Kumar) method is proposed to obtain an optimal solution in terms of TrFNs. From this fuzzy solution, the decision maker (DM) can decide the level of acceptance for the transportation cost or profit. Thus, the major applications of fuzzy set theory are widely used in areas such as inventory control, communication network, aggregate planning, employment scheduling, and personnel assignment and so on.

  • The atrium in the building has many advantages including its aesthetic and functional effect. But the upper part of the atrium has the thermal problem of overheating due to insolation through the window. But natural ventilation aided buoyancy effect can be a solution to make comfortable indoor environment. Proper design of openings is very important to improve thermal environment in the atrium. In this study, thermal evaluations were performed to improve thermal environment in the atrium. Indoor thermal environment of an atrium at Seoul was measured in the field and simulated with Computational Fluid Dynamics( CFD) code. The turbulent flow model adopted is $K-{\varepsilon}$ model. The results of computer simulations are compared with the measurements at the point in the atrium. In order to improve the indoor ventilation environment of the atrium, thermal environment evaluations of six alternatives were conducted. After evaluations of the results, the design guidelines of an atrium are suggested.

  • Poplar contains various flavonoids including naringenin, kaempferol, myricetin, apigenin, luteolin, rhamnetin, and quercetin. These flavonoids are synthesized from naringenin with various enzymes. However, none of genes from poplar involved in flavonoid biosynthesis have been biochemically characterized. We cloned PFNS I-1 from Populus deltoids by RT-PCR method. The open reading frame of PFNS I-1 consisted of 1,017-bp and it showed high similarity with other FNS genes. The purified recombinant PFNS I-1, expressed in Escherichia coli, catalyzed the reaction from flavanone (naringenin) to flavone (apigenin). The reaction of PFNS I-1 was enhanced by cofactors such as oxoglutarate, $Fe^{2+}$, ascorbate and catalase. Thus, it is concluded that PFNS N-1 encodes a flavone synthase I.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify occurrence of needle stick and sharp injuries(NSI) among students, level of faculty stress, and necessity of informed consent when students practice injection skills in fundamentals of nursing practice (FNP). Methods: Data were collected using self-reporting questionnaires and 74 faculty members who teach FNP responded it. Questionnaires included general characteristics, experiences of NSI, stress level, and informed consent. Data were analyzed using frequency, percent and paired t-test. Results: Of 74 faculty members, 51.4% experienced NSI 3~4 times or more during their FNP classes. Major procedures causing NSI during FNP were 'breaking the neck of ampules', 'disposing of used items', and 'inserting needles'. The stress level of faculty was higher and more than doubled when training with human beings compared to manikins. Most faculties (86.5%) agreed to the necessity of informed consent so that the safety of faculty and students could be protected and to provide enough information even though only 10.8% of faculty in this study got informed consent. Conclusion: Because there is high risk in every procedure of NSI, faculty has a high level of stress during injection practice in FNS. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a standard NSI precaution program for junior nursing students and discuss informed consent.

  • Facial nerve schwannomas (FNSs) are usually painless, slow-growing, and without specific symptoms, so that early diagnosis may be difficult. They are particularly liable to being misdiagnosed as parotid gland origin benign tumor before surgery, which can lead to unnecessary parotidectomy or unexpected facial nerve injury. To prevent these complications, it is important that the correct diagnosis is performed at least in intraoperative time. When an adhesion between the mass and the facial nerve is exist or when electrical stimulation of the mass triggers facial movement, FNS is highly suggested diagnosis. In such cases, frozen section analysis should always be performed. In this case, the pre-operative diagnosis from clinical examination and MRI was pleomorphic adenoma. However, intraoperative features led us to suspect that the mass originated from facial nerves, and intraoperative frozen section analysis yielded results consistent with a schwannoma. Based on this intraoperative diagnosis, we carried out a successful conservative treatment with preservation of facial nerve.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study measured the effects of a taste education program developed in Korea on food neophobia and willingness to try novel foods in school children. SUBJECTS/METHODS: One-hundred and twenty school children (aged 7-9 years) residing in Seoul participated in 12 sessions of a taste education program for 3 months. The Korean taste education program was adapted from "Les classes du gout" by J. Puisais and modified to suit a Korean education environment. The study subjected school children to pre- and post-programs on food neophobia and willingness to try novel foods (WTNF), in addition to children's food neophobia in their parents. A total of 101 survey data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. RESULTS: Regarding the effects of taste education, scores of food neophobia significantly decreased (P < 0.01) in the posttest, mean (m) score ($4.10{\pm}1.19$) decreased compared to the pretest ($4.39{\pm}1.00$), and WTNF significantly increased (P < 0.001) in the pretest (m) score ($0.48{\pm}0.33$) compared to the pretest ($0.32{\pm}0.34$). This result indicates verification of the study hypothesis. CONCLUSIONS: Food neophobia scale (FNS), an index that measures personal food preference [1,2], showed a very weak correlation with behavioral willingness to taste novel foods (WTNF). Therefore, it is expected that the two scales measure different things. However, considering that the traits of food neophobia are not easily changed, the taste education program was administered in a remarkably effective manner.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of charge carrier lipid on the skin penetration, retention, and hair growth of topically applied finasteride-containing liposomes. Finasteride-containing liposomes were prepared by traditional thin film hydration method using Phospholipon$^{(R)}$ 85 G and cholesterol with or without charge carrier lipid (1,2 dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate or 1,2-dioleoyl-trimethylammonium-propane for anionic and cationic charge, respectively). Freshly prepared finasteride-containing liposome suspension was applied on the hairless mouse skin, and skin penetration and retention were measured using Keshary-Chien diffusion cell. Non-liposomal formulation (ethanol 10% solution containing 0.5 mg/ml of FNS) was also used as a control. The amount of finasteride in the diffusion cell and mouse skin was measured by HPLC. The hair growth was evaluated using depilated male C57BL/6N mice. Mean particle size of all finasteride-containing liposomes was less than a micron, and polydispersity index revealed size homogeneity. Skin penetration and retention studies showed that significantly less amount of finasteride was penetrated when applied as anionic liposome while more amount of the drug was retained. Specifically, in liposome prepared with 10% anionic charge carrier lipid, penetration was 12.99 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ while retention was 79.23 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ after 24 h of application. In hair growth study, finasteride-containing anionic liposomes showed moderate efficacy, but the efficacy was not found when applied as cationic liposomes. In conclusion, topical application of finasteride using anionic liposome formulation appears to be useful option for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia to avoid systemic side effects of the drug.
