  • Recently, There are increasing number of studies that apply multi-carrier method, a land mobile communication method, to underwater channel environment in order to enhance the performance of underwater communication. Therefore, in this paper, in order to design a new system with improved communication performance compared to the multi-carrier method in underwater communication, we present that the RS(Resource Spreading) FMT-OFDM system has a diversity and repetition effect from resource spreading. Moreover, we verify the performance of RS FMT-OFDM system and existing FMT-OFDM system through simulations after modeling communication channels and setting the system parameter based on the data measured from the real sea. Our result indicate that, compared to the existing FMT-OFDM system, there has been an improvement in communication performance by 12dB based on BER $10^{-3}$ we also discovered that communication performance improves as the resource spreading rate increases.

  • In this paper, the performance of OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and FMT(Filtered Multi-tone) Systems is compared under jamming environment. Two systems are multi-carrier systems to improve data rates. Through the comparison of two systems under jamming environment, the characteristics and strong/weak points of each system are analyzed.

  • Filtered multi-tone (FMT) is a form of multicarrier modulation utilizing frequency-domain equalization efficient in multi-path fading channels. Doppler frequency information can be employed for channel estimation and link adaptation to improve the performance. However, most previous studies have concentrated on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) instead of FMT. Moreover, they have not considered the synchronization error that can commonly occur in practical systems. In this paper, we propose Doppler frequency estimation scheme that is effective in FMT systems with residual synchronization error and high noise levels.

  • Studies applying multiple carrier method such as OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) or FMT(Filtered Multi-Tone) to Underwater acoustic communication(UAC) system are actively under way as UAC is utilized in the various fields and the demand of high speed data transmission increases. In the existing OFDM method, the use of virtual carrier, which is inserted not to affect the adjacent channel in the frequency domain, and the cyclic prefix, which is used to reduce the impact of Inter Symbol Interference and Inter Channel Interference, decrease the throughput. In particular, the length of cyclic prefix to be used becomes longer under water since underwater has a rapidly changing channel characteristic, and the data throughput diminishes because it has to allocate more subcarrier on virtual carrier. This study therefore suggests FMT-OFDM system, a combination of OFDM and FMT, for the purpose of enhanced throughput in the underwater channel environment. Besides, in this study, channel is modeled based on data measured in real sea and the performance is analyzed after setting system parameters.

  • The multicarrier system is in the limelight for broadband wireless communications due to its spectral efficiency. Filtered multitone(FMT) system uses a filter that has several symbol periods duration. Using long-period filter causes a performance degradation because of intersymbol interference in multipath fading channels. In this paper, we propose a simple equalization method which can reduce the ISI due to the wireless channels. The proposed equalization method compensates the ISI by subtracting the estimated ISI components from the current symbol using one-tap equalizer. The performance of the proposed system is verified through theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed system can mitigate the effect of ISI significantly.

  • Superimposed training (SIT) design for estimating of time-varying multipath channels is investigated for mobile orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The design of optimum SIT consists of two parts: The optimal SIT sequence is derived by minimizing the channel estimates' mean square error (MSE); the optimal power allocation between training and information data is developed by maximizing the averaged signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) under the condition of equal powered paths. The theoretical analysis is verified by simulations. For the metric of the averaged SINR against signal to noise ratio (SNR), the theoretical result matches the simulation result perfectly. In contrast to an interpolated frequency-multiplexing training (FMT) scheme or an SIT scheme with random pilot sequence, the SIT scheme with proposed optimal sequence achieves higher SINR. The analytical solution of the optimal power allocation is demonstrated by the simulation as well.
