To determine variations in leaflet length (LL), leaflet width (LW), leaflet size (LS), and leaflet shape index (LSI), and their association with eight agronomic traits, characterization data of 884 soybean accessions which were grown in the autumn of 1992 in Taiwan were analyzed. LL ranged from 4.3 to 14.7 cm, and LW ranged from 2.8 to 9.7 cm. Also, LS (LL $\times$ LW) ranged from 12.1 to 124.6 $\textrm{cm}^2$. The absolute variation of LL, LW, and LS was not large because of limitation in vegetative growth by short day length. None was classified as a large leaflet based on the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR) descriptors. LSI (LL /LW) ranged from 1.21 to 3.06, and three accessions were classified as narrow leaflet. There were differences in ranges and means of LL, LW, LS, and LSI between and within temperate and tropical accessions. LL, LW, LS, and LSI had highly significant positive correlations with seven agronomic traits and highly significant negative correlation with 100-seed weight except LW for all accessions. There was variation in the closeness of association among leaflet traits, and between and within temperate and tropical accessions. Generally, LL, LW, and LS were more closely associated with days to flowering, plant height at $R_1$ and $R_8$, number of pods per plant; LSI was more closely associated with 100-seed weight than other traits.
To determine an optimum harvest time for chinese milk vetch (CMV) seed production, the seeds were harvested at 4 times, according to 25, 30, 35, and 40 day after flowering (DAF), in Miryang, southern part of Korea. CMV plants were manually harvested at each time and seed threshing was done by rice threshing machine. Seed yield, 1,000-seed weight, germinability, and hard coat ratio were investigated. Seed yield was the highest, 53.9 kg/300 kg by dry weight (DW) of CMV plant, at 35 DAF. 1,000-seed weight increased according to seed harvest time from 25 DAF to 40 DAF when it was 3.10 g. The germination ratios of seeds harvested at 4 times were not significantly different when the seeds stored until August 1. In case of long period of CMV seeds stored, the seeds harvested later showed higher germination rate. On the other hand, because the hard coat ratio causing germination inhibition was declined with an increase of storage period, it was higher in the seeds harvested later. There was no difference among the seeds harvested at 4 times at October 1. In conclusion, it was presumed that an optimum harvest time for CMV seed production should be at 35 DAF considering seed yield, weight and germinability.
The objective of experiment was to investigate the effects of planting density on growth and yield of vegetable soybean, and to clarify the optimum planting density of vegetable soybean in the middle west region of Korea. The field experiment with 4 levels of planting density was carried out at Yesan area in $2005{\sim}2006$. The days from seeding to flowering and the days from seeding to harvesting and lodging were not significantly different among planting distance. The stem length was increased as planting distance was shortened but the number of node, branch, pod per branch, pod per individual, weight of stem and pod, one hundred pod weight and rate of 2+3 seed per pod were decreased as planting density was increased. The size of vegetable soybeans was not significantly different among planting distance, but the harvest index of vegetable soybean was decreased as planting distance was shortened. Yield of vegetable soybean was increased as planting distance was decreased. However, the approriate densities for stem and pod weight per a plant, number of pod per a branch and the vegetable soybean yield of 2+3 seed per pod were different from that density. The optimal planting distance of varieties was $60{\sim}25\;cm$ in Sunheukkong and Ilpumgeomjeongkong and was $60{\sim}35\;cm$ in Galmikong.
Yield of potato is largely influenced by drought stress. This study was conducted in Gangneung and Cheongju during the spring cropping of potato. Potatoes in the Gangneung area were affected by drought but there was no damage due to drought in Cheongju. During the early-growth stage, the contents of inorganic components like available phosphate and growth characteristics of the potato leaf in Cheongju were significantly higher than those in Gangneung but there was no difference after the flowering stage. It was considered that the potato plants cultivated in Cheongju could vigorously grow than that of Gangneung under drought stress. In addition, the content of calcium (Ca), which is a secondary messenger related to aging, was found to be higher in potato plants grown in Cheongju than in Gangneung and accumulated more quickly in potato plants of Cheongju. Because magnesium (Mg) was also found to be higher in potato plants from Gangneung by a wide margin, this phenomenon was thought be related with drought stress. The amounts of all inorganic components absorbed from soil were higher in Cheongju than in Gangneung, showing a relatively higher plant biomass in Cheongju. Correlations of development indexes related to leaf showed less or no relation in Gangneung. According to yield characteristics of the harvest stage, although yield was greatly reduced under drought stress condition, the rate of commercial yield was not significantly affected under the drought stress condition. Consequently, it was considered that these responses to drought stress could be utilized to stabilize potato production under the stressful conditions associated with abnormal climate.

A semi-greenhouse experiment with field grown soybean (Glycine max L. cv Deawon, Uram, Jinpong, Soyon, Pungsangnamul, and Haewon) was performed in 2018. The experiment was aimed to investigate individual impacts of drought stress on soybean characteristic and seed yield. The three treatments were used in non-water stress (Control) during the soybean growth season, vegetative stage stress (VS), and flowering period stress (FS). Leaf number, LAI, leaf nitrogen concentration, and leaf biomass were decreased by drought at R4. In our study, the number of pods was 33.6% and 40.5% lower, respectively, in control than in VS and FS. In 100 seed weight, was 16.1% and 10.1% lower, respectively, in control than in VS and FS at R8. As a result, seed yield was 39.8% and 45.1% lower, respectively, in control than in VS and FS. Depending on the drought period, Daewon and Haewon showed a large decrease in yield, while Soyon did not change. The results of this study showed that flower and beginning pod setting stage responded more sensitively to the drought period than vegetative stage. Overall, these results demonstrate soybean seed yield formation more sensitive the during the flowing and beginning pod setting stage. We conclude that adequate water supply for pod setting stage, guaranteeing a high seed yield.

During the growth of fruit vegetables such as pepper, cucumber and tomato, there are light deficiency under the plant canopy. This study was conducted to clarify the effect of light diffusion film on the stem growth, canopy, flowering and fruiting of green pepper in greenhouse. The transmittance of total solar radiation into greenhouse under woven and double films were 90% and 75% of polyethylene film. And the transmittance of photosynthetically active radiation into greenhouse under woven and double films were 96% and 81% of polyethylene film. However, the light diffusions under woven, double and polyethylene films were 46%, 31% and 9%, respectively. The plant height under polyethylene film covered greenhouse was 96.9% cm, taller than those under woven and double films by 6.5, 13.9 cm. And the third node length under woven film covered greenhouse was 8.6 cm, shorter than those under double and polyethylene films by 2.5, 5.7 cm. Also the first branch angle under woven film covered greenhouse was 61.0$^{\circ}$, larger than those under double and polyethylene films by 2.3, 10.3$^{\circ}$. But there was no clear difference in the node numbers among the covering materials. The rate of curved and sterile fruit under woven film covered greenhouse was smaller than those under double and polyethylene films by 4.6, 5.5% and 1.2, 3.6%. But the contents of vitamin C showed no difference among the covering materials and plant densities.
This study was conducted to improve marketing value and productivity of cucumber which was cultivated with primary scaffold stem type (Mannungcheongjang) and lateral stem type (Sayeup). The results are summarized as follows ; 1. Investigation of fruit setting characteristics to improve cucumber training type was resulted that the fruit-thinning was effective 3 nodes in Mannung- cheongjang and 4 nodes in Sayeup, because of defected yield potential and marketing value. 2. In the matter of early growing stage after training and cucumber quality at different treatment, cucumber weight at flowering curved cucumber and growth analysis of Mannungcheongjang were good in order of horizontal>vertical>slant training. And those of Sayeup were good in order of horizontal >slant> vertical training. 3. Aspect of light reception of cucumber plant in the level of plant height and accumulated leaf area index, vertical and horizontal training are better than slant in Mannungcheongjang, and there is order of horizontal >vertical >slant training in Sayeup. 4. Horizontal training in Mannungcheongjang was superior to any other case In view of cucumber number, productivity, and marketing rate. Therefore, this training was suggest ed of best method in cucumber cultivation.
Growth and tuber development of ‘Black Magic’calla lily as affected by the rain shelter with 50% shading and the tuber size were investigated. Tubers of five grades in size were cultivated in the rain shelter or in the open field (control). Days to emergence of shoots in the rain shelter was accelerated by 4.2 days as compared to the open field. Emergence ratio was higher as the tuber was larger, tubers grown in the rain shelter showed the significance in the growth characteristics as compared to the control. There were no significant differences in the number of flowers per tuber between the rain shelter and the open field. Flower quality was 12.2 cm longer than that in the open field. flowering characteristics was improved with the increasing tuber size. Low infection of soft rot disease of 3∼22% was found in the rain shelter as compared to the that of 19∼83% in the open field. Thus tubers produced under the rain shelter showed improved quality, Even if the small tubers with diameters of 0.5∼1.0 cm were cultivated in the rain shelter, the weight and diameters of tuber harvested after approximately 7 months were 50.2 g and 5.7 cm, respectively.
Effects of interspace mulching between polyethylene film house on growth and quality of oriental melon were followed. Soil moisture in control was 26.0%. Those of black nonwoven fabrics sheet and black film were less 1.2% and 2.9% than control, respectively. Soil temperature in control plot was $2.4^{\circ}$ Those of black nonwoven fabrics sheet and black film were higher $0.8^{\circ}$ and $1.8^{\circ}$ than control, respectively. Black film was better than control in stem length, leaf number and area, chlorophyll content, xylem exudate, first flowering and fruit riping periods. Black film was better in fruit weight and soluble solid, and lesser in fermented and malformed fruit ratios, and increased 28% in marketable fruit ratio to control, 1,864kg. This results were mainly from vinyl coverage between polyethylene film house to intercept rainfall and to increase soil temperature, which fasted growth of roots after transplanting in winter season.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the unexpected early loss of leaves on a newly-bred kiwifruit on the regrowth of axillary buds the current season and the early growth and development the following year.METHODS AND RESULTS: The vines were defoliated on Jul. 18, Aug. 16, and Sep. 17 in 2012 and on Jul. 16, Aug. 13, and Sep. 12 in 2013. The vines were defoliated 0 (control), 50, and 100% of the total number of leaves on a vine. The regrowth of axillary buds at 30 days after defoliation increased in proportion to defoliation degrees regardless of the defoliated time. Defoliation the previous season did not influence percent budbreak the next season. Percentage of floral shoots of the control vines was 27.4%, each bearing 2-3 flowers. In those vines defoliated 100% in August and September, however, percent floral shoots and number of flowers significantly reduced.CONCLUSION(S): Defoliation in July, August, and September didnot affect percent budbreak the following year regardless of degrees of defoliation. A 100% defoliation in August and September significantly reduced flowering the following year compared to the control; that in August resulted in no floral buds at all.
