Occurence, seasonal changes and vertical distribution of the silica-scaled chrysophytes in a small fish-free pond were studied using electron microscopy (EM) and light microscopy (LM) from October 1998 to July 1999. The phytoplankton community was characterized by Chrysophyta and Cryptophyta. Ten species of the silica-scaled chrysophytes of genera Mallomonas, Synura, Chrysosphaerella and Spiniferomonas were identified by EM, and the most abundant species were Mallomonas akrokomos and M. portae-ferreae. The maximum population density of M. akrokomos was observed in December and several peaks appeared periodically at about one to two month intervals, whereas M. portae-ferreae developed the maximum density in March. The diurnal vertical distribution of M. akrokomos exhibited clear downward migration at night and slightly upward migration in the morning. A complex interaction among physico-chemical and biological factors seemed to affect the vertical distribution of M. akrokomos. However, the seasonal changes of M. akrokomos did not show significant corre1ations with the physico-chemical and some biologica1 factors. Although M. akrokomos was evenly distributed throughout the water column during some experimental periods, the diurnal patterns found in the two diurnal cycles showed consistency in that it clearly avoided the surface water during the day. This suggested that M. akrokomos may be a shade plankton with maximum densities below surface layer.
Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is the major species developed for aquaculture in South Korea. Over the long history of olive flounder aquaculture, complex and diverse diseases have been a major problem, negatively impacting industrial production. Vibriosis is a prolific disease which continuously damages olive flounder aquaculture. A bacterial disease survey was performed from January to June 2017 on 20 olive flounder farms on Jeju Island. A total of 1710 fish were sampled, and bacteria from the external and internal organs of 560 fish were collected. Bacterial strains were identified using 16 s rRNA sequencing. Twenty-seven species and 184 strains of Vibrio were isolated during this survey, and phylogenetic analysis was performed. Bacterial isolates were investigated for the distribution of pathogenic and non-pathogenic species, as well as bacterial presence in tested organs was characterized. V. gigantis and V. scophthalmi were the dominant non-pathogenic and pathogenic strains isolated during this survey, respectively. This study provides data on specific Vibrio spp. isolated from cultured olive flounder in an effort to provide direction for future research and inform aquaculture management practices.
Nitrifying bacteria were detected by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) method at 6 sampling sites with different eutrophication degree in the Nak-Dong River and their tributaries. And conventional physico-chemical parameters including $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$, and TN were determined concurrently. In rainy period (July), there was no noticeable difference between the number of ammonia/nitrite-oxidizing bacteria detected at each site except Sang-Ju and the ratio of nitrifying bacteria to total counts stained by DAPI varied in 6~33%. By contrast, in the dry period (October), both of bacterial population was increased differently and the ratio of nitrifying bacteria to total counts ranged more widely from 6% in heavily polluted water zone, Hwa-Won to 60% in upper tributary with high agricultural land use. Byung-Sung-Chun. In January, the numbers of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was reduced up to one tenth, while those of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria was apparently increased maybe due to high DO and low DOC.
Environmental differences of each sea around the Korean Peninsula in terms of factors including topography and complexity of sea current may influence species and genetic diversity of marine fishes. Fish are naturally abundant in the frontal area where various currents or water masses meet. However, this food resource is prone to human overexploitation, threatening the marine ecosystem. New fisheries resources management strategies are needed. Such strategies require information about population structure obtained through morphological and genetic methods.
With the world's population increase, demands of fish production increased rapidly. Because of the demand increase, methods of aquaculture also become more intense. With the increasing intensity of aquaculture, more metabolites in the system are accumulated. The metabolites accumulated in the system turn to the causatives of water quality deterioration and become limiting factors for fish growth. Due to the toxicity of ammonia, ammonia removal is needed in aquaculture system. Biofilters, often referred as biological filter or nitrification filter are commonly used in recirculating aquaculture system to remove ammonia and convert it to nitrite, and then to nitrate.

Ayu (or called sweet fish or sweet smelt), Plecoglossus altivelis, is a diadromous fish migrated from freshwater to brackish water to spawn, hatched larvae migrated go to seawater and then back to freshwater to grow. In Asia, it has very high consumers demand due to its good taste and Savor. However, population of this species is currently decreasing because of river pollution, over-fishing and dam construction. Both Cobitis lutheri Rendahl and C.striata Ikeda previously regarded as the subspecies of C.taenia are revised here and raised to the species rank based on the distinct color pattern on their body sides in relation to the shpae of lamina circularis and suborbital spine, and distinct distributional patter. C. lutheri was similar to C. striata in chromosome number and karyotype, but chromosomal polymorphism as Robert sonian event was confirmed only in the population of C.lutheri studies. Both, C. kutheri and C..striata have disjunct ranges : the former in western Korea and east-northern China Mainland, the latter in the Smjin River of korea and west-southern Japan. hybridization between C. lutheri and C. striata by secondary contact appeared in the limited zone of the Dongjin River, Chllabuk-do province, korea, but the evidence for habitat segregation between them suggests the possibility that natural hybridization occurs between the two species and introgression results. We consider that the two species were produced as ecological equivalent species in the different branch stream of the Paleo-Hwangho River , The time of recession of sea level during the gracial period.
A total of 353 farmed rockfish, Sebastes schlegli Hilgendorf, 1880 were sampled from 3 localities on Korean coastline over a 12 month period. Full parasitological examination revealed the polypisthocotylean monogenean Micorcotyle sebastis Goto, 1894 to be abundant with infections consistently reaching over 90~100% prevalence throughout the year. A seasonal pattern in parasite abundance on the gills is evident, with the population peaking twice, the largest in winter and again in summer. While the parasitic load on the left and right gills was not dissimilar, parasites within the gill sets were found to favour settlement of the II and III gill arches. A comparison of parasite abundance with host length, revealed that the smaller length fish classes (<17cm standard body length) had significantly heavier infections than those of larger fish (>17 cm standard body length). This report represents the fist record of Microcotyle sebastis on farmed rockfish in Korean coastal waters.
In the past, marine pollution caused by radioactivity and wastewater discharge caused mass destruction. As an alternative, the land farming system became common and operational. In recent years, safety and environmental problems caused by declining population due to aging of fishermen and underdeveloped facilities have always been lurking, so improvement is urgently needed. As part of the new renewable energy 3020 plan announced by the government in 2017, a new model was proposed to improve the environment as well as save energy when the roof of a water tank farm was remodeled into a solar power system. Study, when the existing roof was remodeled and replaced with a water tank farm in Busan as an empirical model, the energy saving rate was analyzed by comparing the actual electricity consumption and power generation.
Water erosion is progressing in the Loess Plateau, especially in gullies, and the sediment runoff to the Yellow River amounts to 975 million tons every year. Natural factors for water erosion include climate, soil, geological feature, terrain and vegetation. Many development projects due to the increasing population reduced the forest coverage ratio to 10%, and 200 million people in the downstream area are suffering from the damage during intense rainfall. Accordingly, the Chinese government is continuously trying to efficiently prevent the erosion by establishing measures for water erosion, including fish-scale pits, terrace technique, and check dams.
