In this study, interaction of several interface cracks located between a functionally graded material (FGM) layer and an elastic layer under anti-plane deformation based on the distributed dislocation technique (DDT) is analyzed. The variation of the shear modulus of the functionally graded coating is modeled by an exponential and linear function along the thickness of the layer. The complex Fourier transform is applied to governing equation to derive a system of singular integral equations with Cauchy type kernel. These equations are solved by a numerical method to obtain the stress intensity factors (SIFs) at the crack tips. The effects of non-homogeneity parameters for exponentially and linearly form of shear modulus, the thickness of the layers and the length of crack on the SIFs for several interface cracks are investigated. The results reveal that the magnitude of SIFs decrease with increasing of FG parameter and thickness of FGM layer. The values of SIFs for FGM layer with exponential form is less than the linear form.

The development of a new material which should be continuously usable under severe environment of very high temperature has been urgently requested. The conventional thermal barrier coating(TBC) is a two layer coating, but a composition and a microstructure of functionally graded material(FGM) are varied continuously from place to place in ways designed to provide it with the maximum function of mitigating the induced thermal stress. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the heat-resistant characteristics by thermal shock of laser and furnace heating. The fracture behaviors of non-FGM(NFGM) and FGM were investigated based on acoustic emission(AE) technique during thermal shock test. Therefore, it can be concluded that FGM gives higher thermal resistance compared to NFGM by AE signal and fracture surface analysis.
Recently, new functionally graded material(FGM) that has a spatial variation in composition and properties is developed because of its good quality. This material yields the demands for resistance to corrosion and high temperature in turbine blade, wear resistance as in gears and high strength machine parts. Especially coating treatment in FGM surface brings forth a mechanical weak at the interface due to discontinuous stress resulting from a steep material change. It often, leads cracks or spallation in a coating area around an interface. The behavior of propagation cracks in FGMs was here investigated. The interface stresses were reduced because of graded material properties. Also graded material parameter with exponential equation was founded to influence the stress intensity factor. And the resistance curve with FGM coating was slightly increased.

This study was carried out to anlayze the heat-resistant characteristics of functionally gradient material(FGM) composed with ceramic and metal. The thermal fracture behavior of plasma-sprayed FGM and conventional coating material(NFGM) was exaimined by acoustic emession technique under heating and cooling. Furnace cooling and rapid cooling tests were used to examine the effect of temperature change under various conditions, respectively. At the high temperature above $800^{\circ}C$, it was shown that FGM gives higher thermal resistance compared to NFGM by AE signal and fracture surface analysis.
This paper investigates the dynamic response of a functionally graded material (FGM) coated half-plane excited by distributed time harmonic loading. Three types of typical distributed surface loads, including uniform load, Hertz load, and square-root singular load, are considered. The mass density and elastic modulus of the FGM coating are supposed to be described by the exponential function. The material damping is modelled by a linearly hysteretic damping which is expressed by a complex modulus in the time harmonic motion. Using Fourier integral transform technique and numerical integral method, the effects of the excitation frequency, gradient index, damping, and load type on the dynamic stresses and displacements are discussed.
This study was aimed at development of fabrication process of functionally graded materials(FGM), consisting of metal and ceramic by thermal spraying method. NiCrAIY/$Al_2O_3$ FGM were made by using plasma spraying onto the SS400 carbon steel substrate. And mechanical properties such as microhardness, thermal shock resistance and adhesive strength of the coating layer were investigated. Adhesive strength was evaluated by acoustic emission method. It was resulted that NiCrAIY/$Al_2O_3$ FGM made by thermal spraying method showed excellent thermal shock resistance and adhesive strength compared to the other lamellar structures of sprayed coatings and that AE is useful tool to evaluate the defect of thermal sprayed coating layer.

Thermal Barrier Coating with Functional Gradient Materials (FGM-TBC) can play an important role to protect the parts from harmful environments in high temperatures such as oxidation, corrosion, and wear and to improve the efficiency of aircraft engine by lowering the surface temperature on turbine blade. FGM-TBC can increase the life spans of product and improve the operating properties. Therfore, in this study the evaluations of mechanical and thermal properties of FGM-TBC such as fatigue, oxidation and wear-resistance at high temperatures have been conducted. The samples of both the TBC with 2, 3, 5 layers (YSZ/NiCrAlY) to be produced by Air Plasma Spray method (APS) and the bulk TBC with 6 layers to be produced by Plasma Assisted Sintering method (PAS) were used. Furthermore, residual stress, bond strength, and thermal conductivity were evaluated. The average thickness of the APS was 500$\mu\textrm{m}$ to 600$\mu\textrm{m}$ and the average thickness of the PAS was 3mm. The hardness number of the top layer of APS was 750 Hv to 810Hv and that of PAS was 950 Hv to 1440Hv. The $ZrO_2$ coating layer of APS was composed of tetragonal structure after spraying as the result of XRD analysis. As shown in the results of the high temperature wear test, the 3 layer coating of APS had the best wear resistance at $800^{\circ}C$ and the 5 layer coating of APS had the best wear resistance at $600^{\circ}C$. But, these coatings had the tendency of the low-temperature softening at $300^{\circ}C$. The main mechanism of wear was the adhesive wear and the friction coefficient of coatings was increased as increasing the test temperatures. A s results of thermal conductivity test, the ${\Delta}T$ of the APS coating was increased as number of layer and the range of thermal conductivity of the PAS was $800^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$.
Functionally gradient materials(FGM), which have the continuous or stepwise variation in a composition and microstructure, are being noticed as the material that solves problems caused by heterogeneous interface of coating or joining. And these materials also expect new functions occured by gradient composition itself. Therefore, to examine possibility of thermal barrier materials, TZP/Mo·FGM and TZP/Ni·FGM were fabricated by sintering method. As to the sintered specimens, sintering shrinkage, relative density and Vicker's hardness in each composition were examined. The phenomena due to the difference of sintering shrinkage velocity during sintering process and the thermal stress induced through differences of thermal expansion coefficient in FGM were discussed. And the structure changes at interface and microsturcture of FGM were investigated. As a results, the difference of shrinkage between ceramic and metal was about 14% in TZP/Mo and 7% in TZP/Ni. The relative density and hardness were considerably influenced by metal content changes. Owing to unbalance of sintering shrinkage velocity between ceramic and metal, various sintering defects were occured. To control these sintering defects and thermal stress, gradient composition of FGM should be narrow. The microstructure changes of FGM depended on the ceramic or metal volume percents and were analogous to the theoretical design.
A four-layered W/Cu functionally graded material (FGM) (W90% + Cu10%/W80% + Cu20%/W70% + Cu30%/W60% + Cu40%, wt.% fraction) and a four-layered diamond/W-Cu FGM (W90% + Cu10%/W80% + Cu20%/W70% + Cu30%/W55% + Cu40% + diamond5%, wt.% fraction) were fabricated by microwave sintering. The thermal conductivity and thermal shock resistance of diamond/W-Cu FGM and W-Cu FGM were investigated. The morphologies of the diamond particles and different FGMs were analyzed using AFM, SEM, EDS, and TEM. The results show that a 200 nm rough tungsten coating was formed on the surface of the diamond. The density of the tungsten-coated diamond/W-Cu FGM, obtained by microwave sintering at 1200 ℃ for 30 min, was 94.66%. The thermal conductivity of the fourlayered diamond/W-Cu FGM was 220 W·m-1·K-1, which is higher than that of the four-layered W/Cu FGM (209 W m-1 K-1). This indicates that adding an appropriate amount of tungsten-coated diamond to the high Cu layer W/Cu FGM improves the thermal conductivity of the composite. The diamond/W-Cu FGM sintered at 1200 ℃ for 10 min exhibited better thermal shock resistance than diamond/W-Cu FGM sintered at 1100 ℃ for 10 min.
