In this work, various higher-order shear deformation beam theories for wave propagation in functionally graded beams are developed. The material properties of FG beam are assumed graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents, the governing equations of the wave propagation in the FG beam are derived by using the Hamilton's principle. The analytic dispersion relations of the FG beam are obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem. The effects of the volume fraction distributions on wave propagation of functionally graded beam are discussed in detail. The results carried out can be used in the ultrasonic inspection techniques and structural health monitoring.
In engineering structures, to having the projected structure to serve all the engineering purposes, the theory to be used during the modeling stage is also of great importance. In the present work, an analytical solution of the free vibration of the beam composed of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is presented utilizing different beam theories. The comparison of supposed beam theory for free vibration of functionally graded (FG) beam is examined. For this aim, Euler-Bernoulli, Rayleigh, Shear, and Timoshenko beam theories are employed. The functionally graded material properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness direction of the beam with respect to the volume fraction of constituents. The governing equations of free vibration of FG beams are derived in the frameworks of four beam theories. Resulting equations are solved versus simply supported boundary conditions, analytically. To verify the results, comparisons are carried out with the available results. Parametrical studies are performed for discussing the effects of supposed beam theory, the variation of beam characteristics, and FGM properties on the free vibration of beams. In conclusion, it is found that the interaction between FGM properties and the supposed beam theory is of significance in terms of free vibration of the beams and that different beam theories need to be used depending on the characteristics of the beam in question.
Bending, buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded (FG) higher-order beams resting on two parameter (Winkler-Pasternak) elastic foundation are studied using a new inverse hyperbolic beam theory. The material properties of the beam are graded along the thickness direction according to the power-law distribution. In the present theory, the axial displacement accounts for an inverse hyperbolic distribution, and the transverse shear stress satisfies the traction-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the beams. Hamilton's principle is employed to derive the governing equations of motion. Navier type analytical solutions are obtained for the bending, bucking and vibration problems. Numerical results are obtained to investigate the effects of power-law index, length-to-thickness ratio and foundation parameter on the displacements, stresses, critical buckling loads and frequencies. Numerical results by using parabolic beam theory of Reddy and first-order beam theory of Timoshenko are specially generated for comparison of present results and found in excellent agreement with each other.
The primary objective of this study is to examine the influence of geometry on the stability characteristics of cylindrical microstructures. This investigation entails a stability analysis of a bi-directional functionally graded (BD-FG) cylindrical imperfect concrete beam, focusing on the impact of geometry. Both the first-order shear deformation beam theory and the modified coupled stress theory are employed to explore the buckling and dynamic behaviors of the structure. The cylinder-shaped imperfect beam is constructed using a porosity-dependent functionally graded (FG) concrete material, wherein diverse porosity voids and material distributions are incorporated along the radial axis of the beam. The radius functions are considered in both uniform and nonuniform variations, reflecting their alterations along the length of the beam. The combination of these characteristics leads to the creation of BD-FG configurations. In order to enable the assessment of stability using energy principles, a numerical technique is utilized to formulate the equations for partial derivatives (PDEs).
In this paper, the nonlinear static and free vibration analysis of Euler-Bernoulli composite beam model reinforced by functionally graded single-walled carbon nanotubes (FG-SWCNTs) with initial geometrical imperfection under uniformly distributed load using finite element method (FEM) is investigated. The governing equations of equilibrium are derived by the Hamilton's principle and von Karman type nonlinear strain-displacement relationships are employed. Also the influences of various loadings, amplitude of the waviness, UD, USFG, and SFG distributions of carbon nanotube (CNT) and different boundary conditions on the dimensionless transverse displacements and nonlinear frequency ratio are presented. It is seen that with increasing load, the displacement of USFG beam under force loads is more than for the other states. Moreover it can be seen that the nonlinear to linear natural frequency ratio decreases with increasing aspect ratio (h/L) for UD, USFG and SFG beam. Also, it is shown that at the specified value of (h/L), the natural frequency ratio increases with the increasing the values amplitude of waviness while the dimensionless nonlinear to linear maximum deflection decreases. Moreover, with considering the amplitude of waviness, the stiffness of Euler-Bernoulli beam model reinforced by FG-CNT increases. It is concluded that the R parameter increases with increasing of volume fraction while the rate of this parameter decreases. Thus one can be obtained the optimum value of FG-CNT volume fraction to prevent from resonance phenomenon.
In this paper, the thermo-mechanical vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) nanobeams subjected to three types of thermal loading including uniform, linear and non-linear temperature change are investigated in the framework of third-order shear deformation beam theory which captures both the microstructural and shear deformation effects without the need for any shear correction factors. Material properties of FG nanobeam are assumed to be temperature-dependent and vary gradually along the thickness according to the power-law form. Hence, applying a third-order shear deformation beam theory (TSDBT) with more rigorous kinetics of displacements to anticipate the behaviors of FG nanobeams is more appropriate than using other theories. The small scale effect is taken into consideration based on nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen. The nonlocal equations of motion are derived through Hamilton's principle and they are solved applying analytical solution. The obtained results are compared with those predicted by the nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory and it is revealed that the proposed modeling can accurately predict the vibration responses of FG nanobeams. The obtained results are presented for the thermo-mechanical vibration analysis of the FG nanobeams such as the effects of material graduation, nonlocal parameter, mode number, slenderness ratio and thermal loading in detail. The present study is associated to aerospace, mechanical and nuclear engineering structures which are under thermal loads.
This paper presents the analytical solutions for the size-dependent static analysis of the functionally graded (FG) beams with various boundary conditions based on the nonlocal continuum model. The nonlocal behavior is described by the differential constitutive model of Eringen, which enables to this model to become effective in the analysis and design of nanostructures. The elastic modulus of beam is assumed to vary through the thickness or longitudinal directions according to the power law. The governing equations are derived by using the nonlocal continuum theory incorporated with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The explicit solutions are derived for the static behavior of the transversely or axially FG beams with various boundary conditions. The verification of the model is obtained by comparing the current results with previously published works and a good agreement is observed. Numerical results are presented to show the significance of the nonlocal effect, the material distribution profile, the boundary conditions, and the length of beams on the bending behavior of nonlocal FG beams.
This article investigates vibration behavior of magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded (MEE-FG) nanobeams embedded in two-parameter elastic foundation using a third-order parabolic shear deformation beam theory. Material properties of MEE-FG nanobeam are supposed to be variable throughout the thickness based on power-law model. Based on Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory which captures the small size effects and using the Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal governing equations of motions are derived and then solved analytically. Then the influences of elastic foundation, magnetic potential, external electric voltage, nonlocal parameter, power-law index and slenderness ratio on the frequencies of the embedded MEE-FG nanobeams are studied.

In the present work, bending and free vibration analyses of multilayered functionally graded (FG) graphene platelet (GPL) and fiber-reinforced hybrid composite beams are carried out using the parabolic function based shear deformation theory. Parabolic variation of transverse shear stress across the thickness of beam and transverse shear stress-free conditions at top and bottom surfaces of the beam are considered, and the proposed formulation incorporates a transverse displacement field. The present theory works only with four unknowns and is computationally efficient. Hamilton's principle has been employed for deriving the governing equations. Analytical solutions are obtained for both the bending and free vibration problems in the present work considering different variations of GPLs and fibers distribution, namely, FG-X, FG-U, FG-Λ, and FG-O for beams having simply-supported boundary condition. First, the matrix is assumed to be strengthened using GPLs, and then the fibers are embedded. Multiscale modeling for material properties of functionally graded graphene platelet/fiber hybrid composites (FG-GPL/FHRC) is performed using Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model. The study reveals that the distributions of GPLs and fibers have significant impacts on the stresses, deflections, and natural frequencies of the beam. The number of layers and shape factors widely affect the behavior of FG-GPL-FHRC beams. The multilayered FG-GPL-FHRC beams turn out to be a good approximation to the FG beams without exhibiting the stress-channeling effects.
This disquisition proposes a nonlocal strain gradient beam theory for thermo-mechanical dynamic characteristics of embedded smart shear deformable curved piezoelectric nanobeams made of porous electro-elastic functionally graded materials by using an analytical method. Electro-elastic properties of embedded curved porous FG nanobeam are assumed to be temperature-dependent and vary through the thickness direction of beam according to the power-law which is modified to approximate material properties for even distributions of porosities. It is perceived that during manufacturing of functionally graded materials (FGMs) porosities and micro-voids can be occurred inside the material. Since variation of pores along the thickness direction influences the mechanical and physical properties, so in this study thermo-mechanical vibration analysis of curve FG piezoelectric nanobeam by considering the effect of these imperfections is performed. Nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory is utilized to consider the size effects in which the stress for not only the nonlocal stress field but also the strain gradients stress field. The governing equations and related boundary condition of embedded smart curved porous FG nanobeam subjected to thermal and electric field are derived via the energy method based on Timoshenko beam theory. An analytical Navier solution procedure is utilized to achieve the natural frequencies of porous FG curved piezoelectric nanobeam resting on Winkler and Pasternak foundation. The results for simpler states are confirmed with known data in the literature. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocality parameter, electric voltage, coefficient of porosity, elastic foundation parameters, thermal effect, gradient index, strain gradient, elastic opening angle and slenderness ratio on the natural frequency of embedded curved FG porous piezoelectric nanobeam are successfully discussed. It is concluded that these parameters play important roles on the dynamic behavior of porous FG curved nanobeam. Presented numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of curve FG nanobeam with porosity phases.
