  • We present the Yonsei evolutionary population synthesis (YEPS) models based on the high-resolution empirical spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We have adopted the MILES library in the optical wavelength, and our new models based on the MILES library show good agreements with our previous models presented in the YEPS I. The effect of hot horizontal-branch (HB) stars on the integrated properties of simple stellar populations (SSPs) is again confirmed by our models based on empirical SEDs. In addition, we have extended our empirical models to the near-IR wavelength and predicted the strengths of the calcium II triplet (CaT) and the Paschen triplet (PaT) based on the INDO-US and the Cenarro library. We find that the effect of HB stars and the age of SSPs on the CaT is almost negligible. On the other hands, the PaT models are very sensitive to the existence of hot stars, e.g., HB stars and young turn-off stars, and show very similar results with Balmer lines. Interestingly, the CaT distribution of GCs in NGC 1407, which is at odds with the optical (B-I) color distribution, can be explained by the unique feature of the CaT-[Fe/H] relations that show almost the same equivalent widths in the metal-rich regime. We will also discuss the impact of the second-generation populations on the strength of the CaT.

  • The coercivity of a single 27 nm-spherical barium ferrite (S-BaFe) particle was simulated using three models: 1) Gibbs free energy (GFE), 2) Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG), and 3) Stoner-Wohlfarth (S-W). Spherically and hexagonally shaped particles were used in the GFE and LLG simulations to investigate coercivity with the different shape anisotropies. The effect of shape was not included in the S-W model. It was found that the models using a spherical shape resulted in a coercivity higher than the models using the hexagonal shape with both shapes having the same diameter. The coercivity estimated with the S-W model was approximately the same as that for the spherical-shape models, which indicates that spherical shape has no significant effect on the particle's coercivity at nanoscale.

  • This paper describes a new automated simulation system for micromachines whose size range $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-3}$ m. An automic finite element (FE) mesh generation technique, which is bases on the fuzzy knowledge processing and computation al geometry technique, is incorporated into the system, together with one of commerical FE analysis codes, MARC ,and one of commerical solid modelers, Designbase. The system allows a geometry model of concern to be automatically converted to different FE models, depending on physical phenomena of micromachines to be analyzed , i,e. electrostatic analysis, stress analysis, modal analysis and so on. The FEmodels are then automatically analyzed using the FE analysis code, Among a whole process of analysis, the definition of a geometry model, the designation of local node patterns and the assignment of material properties and boundary conditions onto the geometry model are only the interactive process to be done by a user. The interactive operations can be processed in a few minutes. The other processes which are time consuming and labour-intensive in conventional CAE systems are fully automatically performed in a popular engineering workstation environment. This automated simulation system is successfully applied to evaluate an electrostatic micro wobble actuator.

  • Free and forced vibration analysis of the global ship structure using the 3-dimensional finite element(FE) method requires not only the specialized knowledge such as ship structure interacted with fluid, damping and various excitations due to propulsion system but also time-consuming manual tasks in FE modeling, analysis and response evaluation. As a result, the quality of the vibration analysis highly depends on engineer's expertise and experience. In this study, a framework system to improve the efficiency of global ship vibration analysis is introduced. The system promising the utilization of MSC/Patran and MSC/Nastran consists of various modules to support data management, FE modeling of ship structure and loading, input deck generation for free and forced vibration analysis, data extraction and evaluation of analysis results, and databases for FE models of marine diesel engines and vibration criteria. The system may be useful for pursuing standardization of uncertain analysis factors as well as reducing time, cost and human dependency in ship vibration analysis.

  • A full finite element (FE)-based approach is presented for the precision analysis of the strip profile in flat rolling. Basic FE models for the analysis of the mechanical behavior of the strip and of the rolls are described in detail. Also described is an iterative strategy for a rigorous treatment of the mechanical contact occurring at the roll-strip interface and at the roll-roll interface. Then, presented is an integrated FE process model for the coupled analysis of the mechanical behavior of the strip, work roll, and backup roll in four-high mill. A series of process simulation are conducted and the results are compared with the measurements made in hot and cold rolling experiments.

  • Recently, efficient operation and practical management of power plants have become important issues in the nuclear industry. In particular, typical aging parameters such as stress and cumulative usage factor should be determined accurately for continued operation of a nuclear power plant beyond design life. However, most of the major components have been designed via conservative codes based on a 2-D concept, which do not take into account exact boundary conditions and asymmetric geometries. The present paper aims to suggest an effective fatigue evaluation methodology that uses a prototype of the integrated model and its transfer functions. The validity of the integrated 3-D Finite Element (FE) model was proven by comparing the analysis results of individual FE models. Also, mechanical and thermal transfer functions, known as Green's functions, were developed for the integrated model with the standard step input. Finally, the stresses estimated from the transfer functions were compared with those obtained from detailed 3-D FE analyses results at critical locations of the major components. The usefulness of the proposed fatigue evaluation methodology can be maximized by combining it with an on-line monitoring system, and this combination, will enhance the continued operations of old nuclear power plants.

  • The investigation was performed to reveal the removal rate of metal constituents of litters in a Phragmites communis Miseanthus sacchariflorus, Typha angastata and Seirpas tabernaemontani grasslands in the lake Paldangho. The removal rates of metal constituents are determined by the mathematical models. The removal rates and time required to decay up to a percentage of each metal constituent were calculated using these model. The removal rates of Cu, Fe and Zn were 0.61, 0.58 and 0.79 in Phragmites communis 0.39, 0.47 and 0.68 in Miseanthus saccharflorus; 0.26, 0.09 and 0.23 in Typha angustata: 0.56, 0.27 and 0.67 in Seirpus tabernaemontani respectively. The periods required to reach half time to the stedy state of the removal and accumulation for Cu, Fe and Zn were 1,13,1.19 and 0.79 years in Phragmites communis; 1.79, 1.49 and 1.02 years in Miscanthus sacchariflorus; 2.70, 7.43 and 2.96 years in Typha angustata ; 1.23, 2.58 and 1.04 years in Scirqus tabernaemontani, re-spectively. Key words: Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Typha angustata and Scirpus tabernaemontani, lake Paldangho, Removal rate, Cupper, Iron, Zinc.

  • The paper deals with the problem related to the modelling of riveted assemblies for crashworthiness analysis of full-scale complete aircraft structures. Comparisons between experiments and standard FE computations on high-energy accidental situations onto aluminium riveted panels show that macroscopic plastic strains are not sufficiently localised in the FE shells connected to rivet elements. The main reason is related to the structural embrittlement caused by holes, which are currently not modelled. Consequently, standard displacement FE models do not succeed in initialising and propagating the rupture in sheet metal plates and along rivet rows as observed in the experiments. However, the literature survey show that it is possible to formulate super-elements featuring defects that both give accurate singular strain fields and are compatible with standard displacement finite elements. These super-elements can be related to the displacement model of the hybrid-Trefftz principle of the finite element method, which is a kind of domain decomposition method. A feature of hybrid-Trefftz finite elements is that they are mainly used for elastic computations. It is thus proposed to investigate the possibility of formulating a hybrid displacement finite element, including the effects of a hole, dedicated to crashworthiness analysis of full-scale aeronautic structures.
