  • A functional external fixator system for bone deformity near the joints using worm gear was developed for curing the angle difference in fracture bones while the lengthening bar was developed for curing the differences in length, also in fracture bones. Both experiments and FE analysis were performed to compare the elastic stiffness in several loading modes and to improve the functional external fixator system for bone deformity near joints. The FE model using compressive and bending FE analysis was applied due to the angle differentiations. The results indicate that compressive stiffness value in the experiment was 175.43N/mm, bending stiffness value in the experiment was 259.74 N/mm, compressive stiffness value in the FEA was 188.67 N/mm, and bending stiffness value in the FEA was 285.71 N/mm. Errors between experiments and FEA were less than $10\%$ in both the 'compressive stiffness and the bending stiffness. The maximum stress (157 MPa) applied to the angle of the clamp was lower than the yield stress (176.4 MPa) of SUS316L. The degree of stiffness in both axial compression and bending of the new fixator are about 2 times greater than other products, with the exception of EBI (2003).

  • A novel finite element (FE) model updating method based on multi-resolution analysis (MRA) is proposed. The true stiffness of the FE model is considered as the superposition of two pieces of stiffness information of different resolutions: the pre-defined stiffness information and updating stiffness information. While the resolution of former is solely decided by the meshing density of the FE model, the resolution of latter is decided by the limited information obtained from the experiment. The latter resolution is considerably lower than the former. Second generation wavelet is adopted to describe the updating stiffness information in the framework of MRA. This updating stiffness in MRA is realized at low level of resolution, therefore, needs less number of updating parameters. The efficiency of the optimization process is thus enhanced. The proposed method is suitable for the identification of multiple irregular cracks and performs well in capturing the global features of the structural damage. After the global features are identified, a refinement process proposed in the paper can be carried out to improve the performance of the MRA of the updating information. The effectiveness of the method is verified by numerical simulations of a box girder and the experiment of a three-span continues pre-stressed concrete bridge. It is shown that the proposed method corresponds well to the global features of the structural damage and is stable against the perturbation of modal parameters and small variations of the damage.

  • The DECOVALEX project is one of the representative international cooperative projects to enhance the understanding of the complex Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical(THMC) coupled behavior in the high-level radioactive waste disposal system based on the numerical simulation. DECOVALEX-2023 is the current phase consisting of 7 tasks, and Task C aims to model the THM coupled behavior in the disposal system based on the Full-scale Emplacement (FE) experiment at the Mont-Terri underground rock laboratory. This study performs the numerical simulation based on the OGS-FLAC developed for the current study. In the numerical model, we emplaced the heater with constant power horizontally based on the FE experiment and monitored the pressure development, temperature increase, and mechanical deformation at the specific monitoring points. We monitored the capillary pressure as the primary effect inducing the flow in the buffer system, and thermal stress and pressurization were dominant in the surrounding rocks' area. The results will also be compared and validated with the other participating groups and the experimental data further.

  • The removal of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in aqueous solution by coupled electro-oxidation and Fe(II) activated persulfate oxidation process was investigated. The electrochemical oxidation was performed using carbon sheet electrode and persulfate using Fe(II) ion as an activator. The oxidation efficiency was investigated by varying current density (2 - 10 mA/㎠), electrolyte (Na2SO4) concentration (10 - 100 mM), persulfate concentration (5 - 20 mM), and Fe(II) concentration (10 - 20 mM). The 2,4-D removal efficiency was in the order of Fe(II) activated persulfate-assisted electrochemical oxidation (Fe(II)/PS/ECO, 91%) > persulfate-electrochemical oxidation (PS/ECO, 51%) > electro-oxidation (EO, 36%). The persulfate can be activated by electron transfer in PS/ECO system, however, the addition of Fe(II) as an activator enhanced 2,4-D degradation in the Fe(II)/PS/ECO system. The 2,4-D removal efficiency was not affected by the initial pHs (3 - 9). The presence of anions (Cl- and HCO3-) inhibited the 2,4-D removal in Fe(II)/PS/ECO system due to scavenging of sulfate radical. Scavenger experiment using tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) and methanol (MeOH) confirmed that although both sulfate (SO4•-) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals existed in Fe(II)/PS/ECO system, hydroxyl radical (SO4•-) was the predominant radical.

  • A joining of dissimilar metal combination faces significant problems such as poor strength and cracking associated with brittle intermetallic compounds(IMC) formed. An application of laser allows low heat input; leading to less dilution and smaller heat affected zone. The $CO_2$ laser overlay was conducted on an AC2B alloy with feeding Fe-based powders. The overlay area was significantly influenced from the travel velocity rather than the powder feeding rate. The interface between the overlay and substrate consisted of the hard and brittle IMC($FeAl_3,\;Fe_3Al,\;Fe_2Al_5$), which initiating and propagating the crack. The reciprocating test for the slide wear was conducted on a multi-pass overlay experiment. Comparing with the multi-pass overlay with no overlap, the overlay with 50% overlap showed better wear resistance.

  • Spin injection experiment is conducted in epitaxially grown Fe/GaAs hybrid structure. For the formation of Schottky tunnel barrier between Fe and GaAs layers, highly n-doped GaAs layers are grown after n-doped channel layer. A non-local measurement, a voltage measurement probes do not contain a charge current path, is used for detecting only the chemical potential differences by the spin transport. As a result, the dips that are nicely matched with antiparallel region are obtained.

  • The magneto-optical Kerr effect due to the (Fe,Co)/(Pd,Pt,Cu,Ag) multilayer film is calculated considering of multiple reflection effect, and the calculated Kerr spectrum is compared to the reported experimental value. In case of Co/Pd, the reliance of composition and the variable tendency of magneto-optical Kerr rotation angle for Co thickness fully coresponds to experimantal and theoretical value. The theoretical Kerr spectrum of Fe/Cu and Fe/Ag multilayer films show the peaks near the Cu and Ag optical ansorption band in accordance with the experiment. But in case of Co/Pt, the increase tendency of Kerr rofation with decreasing wavelength reported by experiments could not be explained by the optical multiple interference. This difference of theoretical and experimental Kerr spectrum of Co/Pt film might be related with the change of electronic structure of Co and/or Pt from their bulk state.

  • In order to examine the inhibition effect of other heavy metal ions on the removal of heavy metal ions by crab shell in aqueous solution, 10 heavy metal ions $(Cr^{3+},\;Cd^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;Hg^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Mn^{2+],\;Fe^{2+},\;Fe^{3+},\;Pb^{2+})$ were used as single heavy metal ions and mixed heavy metal ions, respectively. In single heavy metal ions, $Pb^{2+},\;Cr^{3+},\;Cu^{2+}$ were well removed by crab shell, however, $Cd^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;Mn^{2+}$ were not. The heavy metal removal increased as the increase of covalent index (Xm$^2$r), and the relationship classified heavy metal ions as 2 heavy metal groups $(Fe^{3+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\; Cr^{3+},\;Mn^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Zn^{2+}\;group\;and\;Pb^{2+},\;Hg^{2+},\;Cd^{2+}\;group)$. In mixed heavy metal ions, the removals of $Fe^{2+},\;Fe^{3+},\;Pb^{2+},\;Cu^{2+}$ as 0.49 m㏖/g, regardless of the existence of other heavy metal ions, were similar to the result of single heavy metal ions experiment. The removals of $Mn^{2+},\;Cd^{2+},\;Ni^{2+}$ decreased as the existence of other heavy metal ions, however, the removal of $Zn^{2+},\;Cr^{3+},\;Hg^{2+}$ increased.

  • This study proposes a finite element (FE) model for predicting the bending strength of small gears used in electro-mechanical actuators for aircraft. First, a strain gauge was attached to the tooth root of test gear, and the strain was measured. Subsequently, the FE model was applied to calculate the strain of the test gear, and the modeled strain was compared with the experimental strain. The results confirmed that the FE strain was very close to the experimental strain and the FE model was valid. This FE model was extended to the bending strength analysis of several small gear tooth models. The bending strengths of all the tooth models were almost identical to the ISO theoretical bending strength. Finally, the FE model was validated and the reliability of the modeled bending strength was evaluated through the strain measurement experiment.
