A baseline free method for locating imperfect bolted joints

  • This paper studies detecting and locating loose bolts using nonlinear guided waves. The 3D Finite Element (FE) simulation is used for the prediction of guided waves' interactions with loose bolted joints. The numerical results are verified by experimentally obtained data. The study considers bolted joints consisting of two bolts. It is shown that the guided waves' interaction with surfaces of a loose bolted joint generates Contact Acoustic Nonlinearity (CAN). The study uses CAN for detecting and locating loose bolts. The processed experimentally obtained data show that the CAN is able to successfully detect and locate loose bolted joints. A 3D FE simulation scheme is developed and validated by experimentally obtained data. It is shown that FE can predict the propagation of guided waves in loose bolts and is also able to detect and locate them. Several numerical case studies with various bolt sizes are created and studied using the validated 3D FE simulation approach. It is shown that the FE simulation modeling approach and the signal processing scheme used in the current study are able to detect and locate the loose bolts in imperfect bolted joints. The outcomes of this research can provide better insights into understanding the interaction of guided waves with loose bolts. The results can also enhance the maintenance and repair of imperfect joints using the nonlinear guided waves technique.

기체 방전의 시뮬레이션을 위한 FE-FCT를 이용한 준 2차원적 수치 모델 (A Quasi Two-Dimensional Model for Gas Discharge Simulation Using FE-FCT Method)

  • 기체 방전의 수치적 시뮬레이션을 위하여 FE-FCT(Finite-Element Flux-Corrected Transport) 방법을 이용한 준 2차원 수치적 모델을 제시한다. 이 모델에서는 전자와 이온에 대한 1차원 연속방정식을 풀어 시 공간적으로 변하는 전하 분포를 계산하고, 공간 전하 분포에 의한 전기장의 변화는 2차원적 전하 분포를 고려하는 디스크 방법을 적용하여 푸아송(Poisson)방정식을 풀어 계산한다. 다양한 벤치마크 문제에 대해 계산한 결과는 이 모델의 정확성과 적용성을 잘 보여준다. 또 스트리머 방전에 대해 계산한 결과는 앞선 연구 결과와 잘 일치하는 것을 보여 준다.

  • Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are layered materials comprised of thin metal sheets and fiber reinforced plastic (FRP). This paper presents the numerical study of the formability enhancement of FMLs composed of an aluminum alloy and self-reinforced polypropylene (SRPP) composite. In this study, a numerical simulation based on finite element (FE) modeling is proposed to evaluate the formability of FMLs using ABAQUS/Explicit. The FE model, which included a single layer of solid and shell elements to model the blank, used discrete layers of the solid element with a contact model and shell elements with a friction based model for the aluminum alloy-composite interface conditions. This method allowed the description of each layer of FMLs and was able to simulate the interaction between the layers. It is noted through this research that the proposed numerical simulation described properly the formability enhancement of the FMLs and the simulation results showed good agreement with experimental results.

승용차량의 중주파수 대역 구조기인 소음예측을 위한 FE-SEA 하이브리드 모델 개발 (Development of FE-SEA Hybrid Model for the Prediction of Vehicle Structure-borne Noise at Mid-frequencies)

  • Vehicle simulation models for noise and vibration prediction have been developed so far generally in two schemes. One is FE models generally used for problems below 200 Hz such as booming noise, and the other is SEA models for high frequencies of more than 1 kHz, representatively related to sound packages. There have been many researches to develop a simulation model for 200~1000 Hz, so-called mid-frequency region, and this paper shows one practical result that covers the trimmed body of a sedan vehicle. The simulation model is developed based on an FE model, and then FE elements at some areas are substituted with SEA elements to reduce DOFs. SEA panels are described by modal density, radiation efficiency, stiffness and damping characteristics that are found from some numerical assessments. Sound packages are modeled similarly as a conventional SEA model. The results obtained from the hybrid model were compared to experimental results. Predicted pressure and vibrational velocity generally show a good agreement. The developed simulation model and related technology are successfully being used in vehicle development process.

  • 본 연구에서는 복합재료 팬 블레이드 도브테일 요소의 인장하중에 따른 점진적 파손거동을 유한요소 시뮬레이션을 통한 수치적 연구를 수행하고, 인장시험을 통하여 정확도를 검증한다. 도브테일 요소는 터보 팬 엔진의 팬 블레이드를 디스크와 결합시키는 조인트의 하나로, 통상 티타늄 등의 금속 재료로 제작되나 경량화 등의 이유로 복합재료의 적용이 연구되고 있다. 하지만 복합재료를 이용한 팬 블레이드 제조과정에서 드롭오프 플라이(Drop-off ply), 수지 포켓(resin pocket) 등의 제조 결함이 필연적으로 발생한다. 이러한 제조 결함이 복합재료 팬 블레이드 도브테일 요소에 미치는 영향을 확인하기 위해 유한요소모델을 이용한 수치해석을 수행하여 예측 결과와 인장시험 결과를 비교 분석한다. 이때 층간분리(delamination) 거동을 모사 가능한 응집영역 모델을 적용하였다. 결론적으로, 열 잔류응력 및 두께방향 압축하중에 의한 계면 물성 강화 효과를 고려하여 유한요소 해석결과와 시험결과 간의 높은 상사성을 얻을 수 있었다.

Numerical simulation on the square column's strengthening characteristics utilizing the SCC jacketing

  • This research aims to simulate and investigate the efficiency of strengthening damaged concrete columns using concrete jacketing.The numerical program included unjacketed reference column made of ordinary RC concrete had a cross-sectional dimension of (100×100) mm and 560 mm long reinforced concrete. These cores were damaged by loading them with approximately 60% of their actual ultimate load capacities as a service load. Then, column specimens were strengthened by applying two types of self-compacting concrete SCC jacketing, which were 25 and 30 mm thick, on all four sides. Exposed to external loads at different directions vertically and horizontally simulate to the seismic load. The 3D Finite Element (FE) simulation is used to predict of three structural criteria that were selected and evaluated (deflection, stress, cracks). The results show that the failure of the strengthening columns is interesting and corresponds to the characteristics of the cracks formed in the concrete section,which was documented numerically using 3D Finite Element (FE). A significant improvement of deflection has been noted at the values at the top SECTION of columns compared to the reference sample reaching an average of up to 36.6% when using a 25 mm thick SCC-3500 jacket.

Seismic experiment and analysis of rectangular bottom strengthened steel-concrete composite columns

  • In order to study the working mechanism of rectangular steel-concrete composite columns subjected to compression-bending load and further determine the seismic performance index, a bottom strengthened rectangular steel reinforced concrete (SRC) column with concealed steel plates and a bottom strengthened rectangular concrete filled steel tube (CFST) columns were proposed. Six column models with different configurations were tested under horizontal low cyclic loading. Based on the experiments, the load-bearing capacity, stiffness and degradation process, ductility, hysteretic energy dissipation capacity, and failure characteristics of the models were analyzed. The load-bearing capacity calculation formulas for a normal section and an oblique section of bottom strengthened rectangular steel-concrete composite columns were pesented and a finite element (FE) numerical simulation of the classical specimens was performed. The study shows that the load-bearing capacity, ductility, and seismic energy dissipation capacity of the bottom strengthened rectangular steel-concrete composite columns are significantly improved compared to the conventional rectangular steel-concrete composite columns and the results obtained from the calculation and the FE numerical simulation are in good agreement with those from the experiments. The rectangular steel-concrete composite column with bottom strengthened shows better seismic behavior and higher energy dissipation capacity under suitable constructional requirements and it can be applied to the structure design of high-rise buildings.

Safety assessment of an underground tunnel subjected to missile impact using numerical simulations

  • This work presents a safety assessment of an underground tunnel subjected to a ballistic missile attack employing the numerical approach. For the impact simulation, a box shaped reinforced concrete (RC) structure with a cross section dimension of 8.0×10.0 m under a soil layer that was attacked by a SCUD missile was modeled using finite element (FE) software LS-DYNA. SCUD missile is one of a series of tactical ballistic missiles developed by Soviet Union during the Cold War, which is adopted for a short-range ballistic missile. The developed FE simulation for the penetration depth of the missile impacting into the soil structure was verified from the well-known formula of the penetration prediction. The soil-structure interaction, the soil type, and the impact missile velocity effects on the penetration depth of the missile into the different soil types were investigated. The safety assessment of the underground tunnel was performed with regard to the different depths of the underground tunnel. For each missile velocity and soil type, a specific depth called the unsafe depth was obtained from the analysis results. The structure beneath the soil beyond this depth remains safe. The unsafe depth was found to be increased with the increasing missile velocity.

  • Conventional single-side straight cutting of sheet metal is analyzed by the rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method. The FE-simulation is performed from initial stage to final stage of shearing process. The ductile fracture criterion and element kill method are used in the present work to estimate if and where a fracture occurs and to investigate the features of sheared surface in shearing process. The FE-simulation results are obtained for different clearances and these are compared with published experimental results. It is found that the results of the present work are in close agreement with published experimental results.

  • DECOVALEX 프로젝트는 고준위방사성폐기물 처분 시스템에서 발생하는 복잡한 열-수리-역학-화학적(THMC) 복합거동에 대해 수치해석을 통해 보다 더 깊이 이해하기 위해 수행되고 있는 대표적 국제공동 연구이다. 현재 DECOVALEX-2023이 7개 task를 기반으로 진행 중이며, 이 중 Task C는 Mont-Terri 지하연구시설에서 수행된 실규모 정치(FE) 시험을 대상으로 처분시스템 내 THM 복합거동을 모사하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 자체개발 해석 코드인 OGS-FLAC을 활용하여 수치해석 연구를 수행하였다. 수치모델에서는 FE 시험과 같이 일정 출력의 히터를 수평으로 위치시켰으며, 주어진 계측지점에서 압력 분포, 온도 변화, 역학적 변형을 계측하였다. 완충재 내부로 유입되는 유체 흐름은 완충재의 흡입력으로 인해 발생하였으며, 주변 영역에서는 열 팽창 및 열 압력이 지배적으로 작용함을 확인하였다. 해석 결과는 향후 타 참여 그룹 및 실험 결과와 비교 검증을 수행할 계획이다.
