  • In this paper, we propose a method of disease diagnosis system that can diagnose the health status of household pets for the people who lack veterinary knowledge. The proposed diagnosis system holds 50 different kinds of diseases with the symptoms for each of them as a database to provide results from symptom input. Each disease database has its own symptom codes for a disease, and by using the disease database, FCM clustering technique is applied to disease which outputs membership degree to determine diseases close to the input symptom as a pet diagnosis result. The implementation results of the proposed pet diagnosis system were obtained by the number of selected symptoms and the possibility values of the diseases that have the selected symptoms being sorted in descending order to derive top 3 diseases closest to the pet's symptom.

  • An eigenspace projection clustering method is proposed for structural damage detection by combining projection algorithm and fuzzy clustering technique. The integrated procedure includes data selection, data normalization, projection, damage feature extraction, and clustering algorithm to structural damage assessment. The frequency response functions (FRFs) of the healthy and the damaged structure are used as initial data, median values of the projections are considered as damage features, and the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm are used to categorize these features. The performance of the proposed method has been validated using a three-story frame structure built and tested by Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA. Two projection algorithms, namely principal component analysis (PCA) and kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), are compared for better extraction of damage features, further six kinds of distances adopted in FCM process are studied and discussed. The illustrated results reveal that the distance selection depends on the distribution of features. For the optimal choice of projections, it is recommended that the Cosine distance is used for the PCA while the Seuclidean distance and the Cityblock distance suitably used for the KPCA. The PCA method is recommended when a large amount of data need to be processed due to its higher correct decisions and less computational costs.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient method to detect shot changes in compressed MPEG video data by using reference features among video frames. The reference features among video frames imply the similarities among adjacent frames by prediction coded type of each frame. A shot change is detected if the similarity degrees of a frame and its adjacent frames are low. And the shot change detection algorithm is improved by using Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering algorithm. The FCM clustering algorithm uses the shot change probabilities evaluated in the mask matching of reference ratios and difference measure values based on frame reference ratios.

  • The performance of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks depends on setting up the Radial Basis Functions over the input space which are the important design procedure of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks. The existing method to initialize the location of the radial basis functions over the input space is to use the conditional fuzzy C-means clustering. However, the researchers which are interested in the conditional fuzzy C-means clustering cannot get as good modeling performance as they expect because the conditional fuzzy C-means clustering cannot project the information which is extracted over the output space into the input space. To compensate the above mentioned drawback of the conditional fuzzy C-means clustering, we apply a fuzzy K-nearest neighbors approach to project the auxiliary information defined over the output space into the input space without lose of the information.

  • In the area of clustering, there are numerous approaches to construct clusters in the input space. For regression problem, when forming clusters being a part of the overall model, the relationships between the input space and the output space are essential and have to be taken into consideration. Conditional Fuzzy C-Means (c-FCM) clustering offers an opportunity to analyze the structure in the input space with the mechanism of supervision implied by the distribution of data present in the output space. However, like other clustering methods, c-FCM focuses on the distribution of the data. In this paper, we introduce a new method, which by making use of the ambiguity index focuses on the boundaries of the clusters whose determination is essential to the quality of the ensuing classification procedures. The introduced design is illustrated with the aid of numeric examples that provide a detailed insight into the performance of the fuzzy classifiers and quantify several essentials design aspects.

  • In this paper, we propose fuzzy-neural Networks(FNN) which is useful for identification algorithms. The proposed FNN model consists of two steps: the first step, which determines premise and consequent parameters approximately using FCM_RI method, the second step, which adjusts the premise and consequent parameters more precisely by gradient descent algorithm. The FCM_RI algorithm consists FCM clustering algorithm and Recursive least squared(RLS) method, this divides the input space more efficiently than convention methods by taking into consideration correlations between components of sample data. To evaluate the performance of the proposed FNN model, we use the time series data for gas furnace.

  • In this paper, we construct a hybrid intelligent controller based on a fusion scheme of GA(Genetic Algorithm) and FCM(Fuzzy C-Means) clustering-based ANFIS(Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System). In the structure identification, a set of fuzzy rules are generated for a given criterion by FCM clustering algorithm. In the parameter identification, premise parameters are optimally searched by adaptive GA. On the other hand, consequent parameters are estimated by RLSE(Recursive Least Square Estimate) to reduce the search space. Finally, we applied the proposed method to the truck backer-upper control and obtained a better performance than previous works.

  • In this paper, we propose a new quantization method using fuzzy C-means clustering(FCM) for lumbar ultrasound image recognition. Unlike usual histogram based quantization, our method first classifies regions into 10 clusters and sorts them by the central value of each cluster. Those clusters are represented with different colors. This method is efficient to handle lumbar ultrasound image since in this part of human body, the brightness values are distributed to doubly skewed histogram in general thus the usual histogram based quantization is not strong to extract different areas. Experiment conducted with 15 real lumbar images verified the efficacy of proposed method.

  • This paper proposes an image segmentation framework that modifies the objective function of Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) to improve the performance and computational efficiency of the conventional FCM-based image segmentation. The proposed image segmentation framework includes a locally weighted fuzzy c-means (LWFCM) algorithm that takes into account the influence of neighboring pixels on the center pixel by assigning weights to the neighbors. Distance between a center pixel and a neighboring pixels are calculated within a window and these are basis for determining weights to indicate the importance of the memberships as well as to improve the clustering performance. We analyzed the segmentation performance of the proposed method by utilizing four eminent cluster validity functions such as partition coefficient ($V_{pc}$), partition entropy ($V_{pe}$), Xie-Bdni function ($V_{xb}$) and Fukuyama-Sugeno function ($V_{fs}$). Experimental results show that the proposed LWFCM outperforms other FCM algorithms (FCM, modified FCM, and spatial FCM, FCM with locally weighted information, fast generation FCM) in the cluster validity functions as well as both compactness and separation.

  • An integrated method is proposed for structural nonlinear damage detection based on time series analysis and the higher statistical moments of structural responses in this study. It combines the time series analysis, the higher statistical moments of AR model residual errors and the fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering techniques. A few comprehensive damage indexes are developed in the arithmetic and geometric mean of the higher statistical moments, and are classified by using the FCM clustering method to achieve nonlinear damage detection. A series of the measured response data, downloaded from the web site of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) USA, from a three-storey building structure considering the environmental variety as well as different nonlinear damage cases, are analyzed and used to assess the performance of the new nonlinear damage detection method. The effectiveness and robustness of the new proposed method are finally analyzed and concluded.
