  • Purpose: Curcuma aromatica Salisb., commonly known as turmeric, has long been used as a powerful health-promoting anti-inflammatory or antioxidant that supports cellular health of the human body. The objective of this study was to compare the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the samples with or without fermentation. Methods: Antioxidant activities of the samples were compared using total phenol, flavonoid contents, 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) cation radical scavenging activity and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. Antimicrobial activities were also examined using the paper disc method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Results: Organic acid content of the C. aromatica Salisb. fermented with Aspergillus oryzae (FCAS) showed a significantly higher value of 0.41% than that of the typical sample without fermentation (CAS) which showed a value of 0.27% (p<0.001). Total phenol and flavonoid contents of the CAS and FCAS did not show significant differences. However, ABTS cation radical scavenging activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity were significantly increased in the samples with fermentation (p<0.001, p<0.01), respectively. The samples of the disc showed inhibited growth of gram positive Bacillus cereus (FCAS 3.70 cm and CAS 2.73 cm) and Staphylococcus aureus (FCAS 2.70 cm and CAS 1.97 cm). MIC of the FCAS (0.25-0.50, 0.5-1.00 mg/mL) was higher than that of the CAS (1.00-2.00, 2.00-3.00 mg/mL), respectively. Conclusion: C. aromatica Salisb. with fermentation showed higher antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in this study. Thus we conclude that fermentation can be a helpful process for more effective application of C. aromatica Salisb. with fermentation in the health-promoting food industry.

  • This paper presents an integrated roll-pitch-yaw autopilot using an equivalent based sliding mode control for skid-to-turn nonlinear time-varying missile system with lumped disturbances in its six-equations of motion. The considered missile model are developed to integrate the model uncertainties, external disturbances, and parameters perturbation as lumped disturbances. Moreover, it considers the coupling effect between channels, the variation of missile velocity and parameters, and the aerodynamics nonlinearity. The presented approach is employed to achieve a good tracking performance with robustness in all missile channels simultaneously during the entire flight envelope without demand of accurate modeling or output derivative to avoid the noise existence in the real missile system. The proposed autopilot consisting of a two-loop structure, controls pitch and yaw accelerations, and stabilizes the roll angle simultaneously. The Closed loop stability is studied. Numerical simulation is provided to evaluate performance of the suggested autopilot and to compare it with an existing autopilot in the literature concerning the robustness against the lumped disturbances, and the aforesaid considerations. Finally, the proposed autopilot is integrated in a six degree of freedom flight simulation model to evaluate it with several target scenarios, and the results are shown.

  • Hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (HADs) and anthocyanins in corn (Zea mays L.) have recently been reported to have anticarcinogenic, anti-hypertensive, antidiabetic, antifungal, antioxidant, and anti-melanogenic activities. Five HADs and anthocyanins in corn were quantified by HPLC according to cultivars and heat processes. In addition, major anthocyanin of a black waxy corn was isolated and identified by several instrumental analysis, and its content was also quantified by HPLC according to heat processes. Of the ten corn cultivars, five waxy corn cultivars had moderate five HADs contents except "Baksa" waxy corn with higher two free cinnamic acids (FCAs), p-coumaric and ferulic acids. In contrast, three dent corn cultivars contained higher levels of three polyamine conjugates (PCs), CFP, DCP and DFP, and especially "P3394" had the highest amount of the three PCs. Two sweet corn cultivars had generally intermediate HADs levels between waxy and dent corn cultivars. Of the three colored-waxy corns, a black Mibaek waxy corn had the highest anthocyanin content. During heat processes, levels of two FCAs in the black waxy corn generally increased, whereas no significant change on three PCs contents was observed except the puffing process. Roasting, retort and puffing processes significantly increased two FCAs and especially, the puffed black waxy corn had the highest amount of FCAs. Meanwhile, most heat treatments except retort process, considerably decreased total anthocyanin contents, and especially the puffed black waxy corn had nearly no anthocyanin. Level of one major anthocyanin, pelargonidin 3-glucoside (P3G) isolated from a black waxy corn was appreciably decreased by heat treatments except retort process, which greatly increased P3G content. These results suggest that the retorted black waxy corn may be a promising high quality functional corn product.

  • With the development of autonomous driving technology, as the use of software in vehicles increases, the complexity of the system increases and the difficulty of development increases. Developments that meet ISO 26262 must be carried out to reduce the malfunctions that may occur in vehicles where the system is becoming more complex. ISO 26262 for the functional safety of the vehicle industry proposes to consider functional safety from the design stage to all stages of development. Specifically at the software level, the requirements to be complied with during development and the requirements to be complied with during verification are defined. However, it is not clearly expressed about specific design methods or development methods, and it is necessary to supplement development guidelines. The importance of analysis and verification of requirements is increasing due to the development of technology and the increase of system complexity. The vehicle industry must carry out developments that meet functional safety requirements while carrying out various development activities. We propose a process that reflects the perspective of system engineering to meet the smooth application and developmentrequirements of ISO 26262. In addition, the safety analysis/verification FMEA processforthe safety of the proposed ISO 26262 function was conducted based on the FCAS (Forward Collision Avoidance Assist System) function applied to autonomous vehicles and the results were confirmed. In addition, the safety analysis/verification FMEA process for the safety of the proposed ISO 26262 function was conducted based on the FCAS (Forward Collision Avoidance Assist System) function applied to the advanced driver assistance system and the results were confirmed.

  • The volume of insurance business of Korea is now ranked 6th in the world. In spite of the rapid growth of the volume of the Korean insurance market, the growth of quality and technology of Korean insurance business has not reached on the top position. And the role of actuaries in Korea does not come up to the standard of the advanced economies due to the total lack of good actuarial science programs in Korea. In this paper, we consider a few desirable actuarial science programs for both undergraduate and graduate level and show concrete examples of curriculums useful in Korean universities. The curriculums are designed to help students to pass the four exams of Society of Actuaries and Casualty Actuarial Society and to get credits for Validation by Educational Experience (VEE). At the same time our curriculums can cover the contents of Korean actuarial exams. We also consider the actuarial internship programs.
