  • The low- frequency acoustic sensor using the recently developed FBG has an excellent merits which the existing fiber-optic sensor has and also it has an excellent signal sensing effect in the environment of low-frequency($30Hz{\sim}300Hz$). Furthermore, we can expect the utilization of low-frequency signal defection instead of existing microphones in the environment of electric noise and also it can be developed as the high-sensibility multiplexing through the sensor array system.

  • A monitoring system for the subway structures using prestrained FBG sensors fixed with partially stripped fibers was developed. The sensor packages had pre-strain controllable fixtures. Tensile and compressive strain of the structure could be measured without slip. The FBG sensor system was applied to the concrete lining structure in Taegu subway. Near the structure, the narrow tunnel construction, for the electric power cables and telecommunication cables, started. We wanted to measure the deformations of the subway structures due to the construction by the FBG sensor. The applied sensors had the gauge length of 1 meter to overcome the inhomogeneity of the concrete material with enough length. In order to fix tightly to the structure, the partially stripped parts of the sensor glued to the package and slip phenomenon between fiber and acrylate jacket was prevented. Prestrain of the sensor was imposed by controlling the two fixed points with bolts and nuts in order to measure compressive strain as well as tensile strain. The behavior of subway lining structure could be monitored very well.

  • Acoustic emission(AE) has emerged as a powerful nondestructive tool to detect or monitor preexisting defects and leaks in the vessel structures. A Bragg grating based acoustic emission sensor system is developed. Various type of fiber Bragg grating sensor including the variable length of sensing part was fabricated and prototype sensor system was tested by using PZT pulser and pencil lead break sources. Two types of sensor attachment were used. First, the fiber Bragg grating sensor was attached fully to the surface using bonding agent. Second one is that one part of fiber was attached to the surface partly by bonding and the other part of fiber will be act as a cantilever. That is, the resonant frequency of the fiber Bragg grating sensor will depend on the length of sensing part. The final goal of the sensor system is to provide on-line monitoring of cracks or leaks in reactor vessel head penetration of nuclear power plants.

  • We have measured the radiation-induced Bragg wavelength shift (BWS) of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) which was inscribed in Ge-doped core silica using a phase mask during irradiation up to a dose of 23 kGy and annealing effects after the gamma-exposure. For packaged FBG sensors, we observed the maximum radiation-induced BWS of about 91 pm during irradiation. Packaged FBG sensors also show higher radiation sensitivity above nearly a factor of two than non-packaged type sensor in the same condition.

  • A wavelength-demodulation algorithm for FBG sensor is proposed by using a double-pass Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Zero-crossing points of double-passed interference signal are used to trigger the accurate $90^{\circ}C$ phase difference positions in the sensor signal, which is an essential condition in the subsequent arctangent and phase unwrapping signal processing. With the proposed method, we could efficiently measure various measurands, such as dynamic-, static-strain, and temperature, and ${\sim}8pm$ of wavelength resolution was obtained.

  • This Paper describes a matched-filter type strain sensor system using optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor. Matched-filter type uses another wavelength-matched FBG filter to track wavelength shift in the FBG sensor. Filter FBG is attached on a fiber stretcher and stretched by PZT actuator. To overcome the nonlinearity and hysteresis of the PZT actuator that degrades system accuracy, a string resonator which can measure an absolute strain is employed. And the effect of vibration modes on string resonator is investigated particularly regarding its sensitivity and stability.

  • A novel fiber optic sensor is demonstrated using a FBG in PM(Polarization-Maintaining) fiber. Gratings have been written in a Bow-Tie type fiber using the phase mask. The operation of the sensor simply involves monitoring back-reflected Bragg wavelengths from the grating. Since PM fiber has two principal semi-axes with two indices of refraction, two Bragg wavelengths were observed. We have observed the position of Bragg wavelengths for PM FBG shifted simultaneously by either applying the longitudinal strain or temperature change. The wavelength sensitivity of 1.2pm/$\mu$$\varepsilon$ about a longitudinal strain and the wavelength sensitivity of 11.4pm/$^{\circ}C$ about a temperature have been experimentally achieved. The wavelength sensitivity of both longitudinal strain and temperature are approximately same with the reported values for the single mode FBG. On the other hand, the change of separation between Bragg wavelengths was observed by the applying transverse stress. We observed that the separation between two Bragg wavelengths is proportional to the applied transverse stress. The wavelength sensitivity of 14.6 pm/N about a transverse stress has been achieved. We have demonstrated PM FBG sensors can measure the transverse stress independently from the effects of temperature.

  • In this paper, we demonstrated the simultaneous measurment of triple parameters such as strain, temperature, and vibration using single FBG/EFPI hybrid sensor. The FBG/EFPI sensor system for the strain and temperature measurement and the EFPI sensor system for the the vibration measurement were combined by a wavelength division multiplexer. The optical source of FBG/ EFPI sensor system is a wavelength-swept fiber laser(WSFL) and that of an EFPI sensor system is a laser diode. We performed the simultaneous measurement of thermal strain, temperature, and vibration of a aluminum beam placed in a thermal chamber and validated the efficiency of the constructed measurment system.

  • In several industrial fields, epoxy resin is widely used as an adhesive for co-curing and manufacturing various structures. Controlling the manufacturing process is required for ensuring robust bonding performance and the stability of the structures. A fiber optic sensor is suitable for the cure monitoring of epoxy resin owing to the thready shape of the sensor. In this paper, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor was applied for the cure monitoring of epoxy resin. Based on the experimental results, it was demonstrated that the FBG sensor can monitor the status of epoxy resin curing by measuring the strain caused by volume shrinkage and considering the compensation of temperature. In addition, two types of epoxy resin were used for the cure-monitoring; moreover, when compared to each other, it was found that the two types of epoxy had different cure-processes in terms of the change of strain during the curing. Therefore, the study proved that the FBG sensor is very profitable for the cure-monitoring of epoxy resin.
