Characteristics of Design Rainfall Hyetographs in Seoul (서울지점 계획강우의 시간분포특성)

  • 최근 기후변화에 따라 강우양상이 급격한 변화를 나타내고 있다. 년 평균 강우량의 증가뿐만 아니라 국지성 강우강도가 현저히 증가하여 홍수의 위험이 증대되고 있다. 강우특성변화에 따른 정확한 수문분석이 필요하고, 설계홍수량 산정을 위한 강우의 시간분포의 선정이 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 기상청 서울지점의 계획강우분포를 도출하기 위해 국내에서 사용되고 있는 강우 시간분포 설정방법 중 Huff의 방법, Yen-Chow방법, 교호블럭법, Keifer-Chu방법을 비교 분석하였다. 확률강우량 산정을 위하여 기상청 관할 서울지점의 1954년부터 2010년까지 67년간의 강우량 자료를 사용하였다. 빈도분석은 국립방재연구원의 FARD2006을 이용하여 적합한 확률분포인 확률가중모멘트법에 의한 매개변수 추정과 ${\chi}^2$기법 등에 의한 적합도 검정을 거쳐 선정된 GEV분포를 사용하였고, 강우의 지속기간은 100분, 180분이며 재현기간은 100년, 200년, 300년, 500년으로 였다. 강우시간분포 설정방법 중 첨두강우량은 대체적으로 교호블록법이 가장 크다. Huff방법(2분위)은 첨두강우발생 전의 총 강우량이 첨두강우발생 후의 총 강우량 보다 큰 경향을 보이나, 다른 방법의 경우는 첨두강우발생 후 총 강우량이 전보다 더 크게 나타났다. 많이 쓰이는 방법 중 하나인 Huff 분포에 관하여 좀 더 정확한 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

Prioritizing the Preferences of Iranian Cancer Patients Regarding Acquisition of Health Information: Strategy for Patient Education

  • Recognizing cancer patients' preferences to obtain health information can help improve and reform the methods of communicating and providing proper services and consequently lead to effective patient education. The present cross-sectional study to prioritize the preferences of cancer patients regarding the acquisition of health informationwas conducted on cancer patients referred to hospitals affiliated to Semnan University of Medical Sciences in 2015. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire was developed. In the field of side effects of medications, 50 (46.7%) reported knowing about weight change, in the area of achieving relative health, 62(57.9%) announced awareness about diet, and 45 (42.1%) reported physical complications as a first regarding information needs. In the area of obtaining information, 50 (46.7%) tended to take their information through means outside of the hospital setting. These results can help with design of clinical information systems, as they inform the most relevant and useful coverage designed for cancer patients. Providing useful information through healthcare providers, the media and clinical information systems can act as a major source of social support for cancer patients.

  • Here, as-synthesized $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles were incorporated into the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) lattice to activate sodium percarbonate (SPC) for degradation of methylene blue (MB). The reaction rate constant of $Fe_3O_4@ZIF-8/SPC$ process ($0.0632min^{-1}$) at acidic conditions (pH = 3) was more than six times that of the $Fe_3O_4/SPC$ system ($0.009min^{-1}$). Decreasing the solute concentration, along with increasing SPC concentration and $Fe_3O_4@ZIF-8$ nanocomposite (NC) dosage, favored the catalytic degradation of MB. The $Fe_3O_4@ZIF-8$ NC after fifteen consecutive treatment processes showed the excellent stability with a negligible drop in the efficiency of the system (<10%). The reaction pathway was obtained via GC-MS analysis.

  • In this paper, we discuss a mathematical method for determining the return energy of the wave from the sample and comparing it with the mechanical energy consumed to change the dimension of the sample in the triaxial test of the rock. We represent a method to determine the mechanical energy and then we provide how to calculate the return energy of the wave. However, the static energy and pulse return energy will show higher amounts with axial pressure increase. Three types of clastic sedimentary rocks including sandstone, pyroclastic rock, and argillitic tuff were selected. The sandstone showed the highest strength, Young's modulus and ultrasonic P and S waves' velocities versus others in the triaxial test. Also, from the received P wavelet, the calculated pulse wave returning energy indicated the best correlation between axial stress compared to wave velocities in all specimens. The fact that the return energy decreases or increases is related to increasing lateral stress and depends on the geological characteristics of the rock. This method can be used to determine the stresses on the rock as well as its in-situ modulus in projects that are located at high depths of the earth.

Energy absorption optimization on a sandwich panel with lattice core under the low-velocity impact

  • This paper focuses on the energy absorption of lattice core sandwich structures of different configurations. The diamond lattice unit cell, which has been extensively investigated for energy absorption applications, is the starting point for this research. The energy absorption behaviour of sandwich structures with an expanded metal sheet as the core is investigated at low-velocity impact loading. Numerical simulations were carried out using ABAQUS/EXPLICIT and the results were thoroughly compared with the experimental results, which indicated desirable accuracy. A parametric analysis, using a Box-Behnken design (BBD), as a method for the design of experiments (DOE), was performed. The samples fabricated in three levels of parameters include 0.081, 0.145, and 0.562 mm2 Cell sizes, and 0, 45, and 90-degree cell orientation, which were investigated. It was observed from experimental data that the angle of cells orientation had the highest degree of influence on the specific energy absorption. The results showed that the angle of cells orientation has been the most influential parameter to increase the peak forces. The results from using the design expert software showed the optimal specific energy absorption and peak force to be 1786 J/kg and 26314.4 N, respectively. The obtained R2 values and normal probability plots indicated a good agreement between the experimental results and those predicted by the model.

Updating BIM: Reflecting Thermographic Sensing in BIM-based Building Energy Analysis

  • This paper presents an automated computer vision-based system to update BIM data by leveraging multi-modal visual data collected from existing buildings under inspection. Currently, visual inspections are conducted for building envelopes or mechanical systems, and auditors analyze energy-related contextual information to examine if their performance is maintained as expected by the design. By translating 3D surface thermal profiles into energy performance metrics such as actual R-values at point-level and by mapping such properties to the associated BIM elements using XML Document Object Model (DOM), the proposed method shortens the energy performance modeling gap between the architectural information in the as-designed BIM and the as-is building condition, which improve the reliability of building energy analysis. The experimental results on existing buildings show that (1) the point-level thermography-based thermal resistance measurement can be automatically matched with the associated BIM elements; and (2) their corresponding thermal properties are automatically updated in gbXML schema. This paper provides practitioners with insight to uncover the fundamentals of how multi-modal visual data can be used to improve the accuracy of building energy modeling for retrofit analysis. Open research challenges and lessons learned from real-world case studies are discussed in detail.

Freezing-thawing resistance evaluation of sandy soil, improved by polyvinyl acetate and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether mixture

  • Freezing-thawing cycles have significant effect on soils engineering behavior in frozen areas. This effect is more considerable in fine-graded than coarse-grained soils. The objective of this study is improving soil durability and strength in continues freezing-thawing cycles. For getting this purpose mixture of Polyvinyl Acetate (PVAc) and Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether (EGBE) has been added to fine-grained soil and final prepared samples were tested at different freezing-thawing cycles. PVAc was mixed with 1%, 2% and 3% of soil weight. Half of PVAc weight was used as weight of EGBE. Freezing-Thawing cycles were exposed to samples and they were tested at different cycles. Results showed that adding mixture of PVAc+EGBE improved strength and durability of samples up to 10 freezing-thawing cycles. Unconfined compress strength tests were applied to samples and stress and strain of samples were tested on failure time. Behavior of samples was different at different percentages of mixture. Results showed that increasing amount of PVAc from 1% to 2% had more considerable effect on final stress than 2% to 3%. Using higher percentages of PVAc + EGBE mixture leaded to that samples carried more strain before collapsing. Another result gained from tests was that, freezing-thawing effect was more considerable after fourth cycles. It means differences between first and fourth cycles were more considerable than differences between fourth and tenth.

shRNA Mediated RHOXF1 Silencing Influences Expression of BCL2 but not CASP8 in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 Cell Lines

  • RHOXF1 has been shown to be expressed in embryonic stem cells, adult germline stem cells and some cancer lines. It has been proposed as a candidate gene to encode transcription factors regulating downstream genes in the human testis with antiapoptotic effects. Its expression in cancer cell lines has implied a similar role in the process of tumorigenesis. The human breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 were cultured in DMEM medium and transfected with a pGFP-V-RS plasmid bearing an RHOXF1 specific shRNA. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR was performed for RHOXF1, CASP8, BCL2 and HPRT genes. Decreased RHOXF1 expression was confirmed in cells after transfection. shRNA knock down of RHOXF1 resulted in significantly decreased BCL2 expression in both cell lines but no change in CASP8 expression. shRNA targeting RHOXF1 was shown to specifically mediate RHOXF1 gene silencing, so RHOXF1 can mediate transcriptional activation of the BCL2 in cancers and may render tumor cells resistant to apoptotic cell death induced by anticancer therapy. shRNA mediated knock down of RHOXF1 can be effective in induction of apoptotic pathway in cancer cells via BCL2 downregulation, so it can have potential therapeutic utility for human breast cancer.

Lack of Association between the CDH1 -160C>A Polymorphism and Risk of Gastrointestinal Cancer - a Meta-Analysis

  • E-cadherin (CDH1) genetic variations alter gene transcriptional activity of epithelial cells in vitro and may cause susceptibility to various cancers. Associations of CDH1 -160C>A polymorphism with various cancers have been widely reported. However, the results are controversial and inconsistent. To derive a more accurate estimation of the relationship, a meta-analysis was performed with regard to gastrointestinal (GI) cancer risk. Eligible studies were identified through a search of PubMed database until December 2015. Associations between the CDH1 -160C>A polymorphism and GI cancer risk was considered by odds ratios (ORs) together with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A total of 31 studies including 11,606 cases and 12,655 controls were involved in this meta-analysis. Overall, this meta-analysis showed no association between CDH1 -160C>A polymorphism and GI cancer risk (A vs. C: OR = 1.08, 95%CI = 0.98-1.18, P = 0.086;CA vs. CC: OR = 1.09, 95%CI = 0.97-1.22, P = 0.118; AA vs. CC: OR = 1.10, 95%CI = 0.89-1.35, P = 0.356; AA vs. CC + CA: OR = 1.06, 95%CI = 0.96-1.18, P = 0.207; CA+AA vs. CC: OR = 1.01, 95%CI = 0.84-1.22, P = 0.89). In subgroup analysis, similar results were found. In conclusion, this meta-analysis has demonstrated that there is a lack of association of the CDH1-160C>A polymorphism with GI cancer susceptibility.

Association between the XRCC3 Thr241Met Polymorphism and Gastrointestinal Cancer Risk: A Meta-Analysis

  • Background: The x-ray repair cross-complementing group 3 (XRCC3) encodes a protein involved in the homologous recombination repair (HRR) pathway for double-strand DNA repair. Associations of the XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphism with various cancers have been widely reported. However, published data on links between XRCC3 Thr241Met and gastrointestinal (GI) cancer risk are inconsistent. Objective and Methods: A meta-analysis was conducted to characterize the relationship between XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphisms and GI cancer risk. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95.0% confidence intervals were assessed using random- or fixed- effect models for 28.0 relevant articles with 30.0 studies containing 7,649.0 cases and 11,123.0 controls. Results: The results of the overall meta-analysis suggested a borderline association between the XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphism and GI cancer susceptibility (T vs. C: OR=1.18, 9 % CI=1.0-1.4, POR=0.04; TT vs. CT+CC: OR=1.3, 95 % CI=1.0-1.6, POR=0.04). After removing studies not conforming to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE), however, this association disappeared (T vs. C: OR=1.00, 95 % CI=0.9-1.1, POR=0.96; TT vs. CT+CC: OR=0.9, 95 % CI=0.8-1.1, POR=0.72). When stratified by ethnicity, source of controls or cancer type, although some associations between XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphism and GI cancer susceptibility were detected, these associations no longer existed after removing studies not conforming to HWE. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis suggests that the XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphism is not associated with risk of GI cancer based on current evidence.
