The experiments of the Aerodynamic characteristics of a counter-rotating axial fan were carried out. The performance tests of a single and a counter-rotating axial fan were carried out based on the Korean Standard Testing Methods for Turbo-fans and Blowers(KS B 6311). The performances of single and counter-rotating axial fans were obtained and compared with each other. The flow fields of a counter-rotating axial fan at the peak efficiency point were measured using a five-hole probe. As a result, compared with the performance of a single-rotating axial fan, that of a counter-rotating axial fan was superior. And it is confirmed that most of the swirl flow generated by the front rotor was eliminated by the rear rotor.

Air flow and its pressure at electric fan according to three, four and five blades are analyzed in this study. As the number of blades increases at the same condition of specification, air tends to converge and becomes natural wind but higher power is consumed. And the velocity of wind is decreased as the space between winds becomes narrow. The turbulent flow is happened in the center of the body of revolution and the kinetic energy becomes largest in case of three blades. The pressure is decreased than atmospheric pressure from fan to outlet. As the number of blades increases, the pressure drop becomes smaller and is smallest in case of the fan with three blades. As the study result, The electric fan with three blades is thought to be effective in view of power consumption and design.

The performance of cooling fan is affected by many peripheral parts, such as radiator, condenser, engine block and etc. Higher power has been requested in more confined automobile engine room. Thus, cooling performance becomes very important to remove the heat generated from the automobile engine more efficiently. In this paper, the performance of cooling fan including effects of engine block is investigated by using a fan tester based on the ASHRAE and the AMCA standards. A flow rate - gap distance curves and a flow rate - engine block constant curves are obtained from this study.

This paper described improvement and operation of a 'Tail-Fan' anti-torque performance test system KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) developed a 'Tail-Fan' anti-torque system of a helicopter and a performance test-rig to test the performance of the Tail-Fan. The test-rig was improved for full rotating test in 4300rpm(100%). Machinery and hydraulic parts ware changed to reduce vibration and to increase safety. To find the operation rotating speed for the performance test, vibration test were carried out rising accelerometers on tail gear box. The performance test conditions of the Tail-Fan to avoid a resonance were found from vibration test results. The Tail-Fan operation tests were performed safely frier to carry out performance test.

In the Over-The-Range, the outlet size is limited by the industrial standards. Therefor to enlarge the volume of cavity, the installation height of ventilation fan is become small, the system resistance is higher than before. For that reason, the important design variables such as the diameter of a fan, the scroll expansion angle, etc. which play the significant role on flow rate and noise, are confined. In this study, we made an experiment of the diameter of fans relation to scroll expansion angle and investigated flow rate of the length of fans in enlarged cavity volume of OTR, and then we designed the new scroll to improve the flow rate and noise level. As a result, flow rate increased to 110% compared to current scroll and the blade passing frequency of a fan is disappeared by inclined cut-off shapes.

A noise prediction method of axial flow fan is developed by incorporating through-flow method and vortex shedding noise model. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuation induced by wake vortices of fan blades and radiate as diploe distribution. The wake vortices are analyzed by combining Karman vortex street model and through-flow analysis results, and the vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by thin airfoil theory. The predicted sound pressure levels and directivity patterns of fan noise by the present method are favorably compared with fan noise test data. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful for predicting the aero-acoustic performance map of the fan operated at off-design point.

In order to design micro-fan appropriately, flow chacracteristics and mechanics should be carefully considered. The present work concerns with design procedure for a micro-fan using NACA(National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) airfoil series. The generation of fan profiles is carried out automatically by defining related parameters, which is also converted to CAD/CAM data automatically. The optimal parting surface for the mold of micro-fan is also calculated by analyzing the geometric data numerically. As a consequence, the high capacity micro-fan can be developed successfully with a high-quality and an improved efficiency.

Unstable performance deterioration was found on the performance curve of a small propeller fan with a back plate. To investigate this phenomenon and the effects of the back-plate on the performance of the fan, performance tests and flow measurement using 3-hole pitot tube were carried out. Measurements showed that when the flow rate is small, the radial flow dominates, and when the flow rate is large, the axial flow dominates. Performance characteristic of the propeller fan changes from radial to axial type as the flow rate increases. Unstable performance changes are the result of type change of the flow through the fan.
This paper reports the fluid flow and heat transfer around a module cooled by forced air flow generated by a piezoelectric(PZT) cooling fan. A flexible PZT fan with distortion in a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure which was mounted on a PCB in a parallel-plate channel($450{\times}80{\times}700mm^3$) accelerates surrounding fluid locally. Input voltages of 20-100V and a resonance frequency of 23Hz were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The cooling effect using a PZT fan was larger than that of free convection. Fluid flow around the module were visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distribution around heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film(LCF). We found that the flow type was y-shaped and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a piezoelectric cooling fan.
In this study, we analyzed the three dimensional unsteady flow field around the motor cooling fan using the unsteady lifting surface theory. We obtained the flow rate for various geometries of fan from the calculated results of velocity field. For the data of design parameter and rotating speed(rpm) of the fan, we can predict the flow rate of the motor cooling fan with thin thickness through numerical analysis without the experimental data of the free stream velocity which is a boundary condition of flow field. the numerical results showed the flow rate within 10% of error in comparison with experimental results. The radial fans, which are often used as internal motor fan were also investigated with the same procedure.
