  • Al-pillared clay was synthesized by constructing pillars of aluminum oxides at the interlayer of montmorillonite in bentonite. XRD, DTA and chemical analyses of Al-pillared clay were performed to examine mineralogical properties. Batch adsorption experiments were also conducted to determine the adsorption properties of this synthesized clay for phosphate ions. XRD analyses showed that the interlayer space of Al-pillared clay expanded to 18.03 $\AA$ at room temperature and shifted to $17 \AA$ after heating to $550^{\circ}C$. A small change in interlayer space after heating indicates high thermal stability. The interlayer expansion by glycerol was also very small. From DTA analyses, pillared clay showed the characteristic endothermic peaks at 270 and $420^{\circ}C$ , which might be caused by dehydration in framework of pillars between interlayers. Adsorption experiment revealed that Al-pillared clay had an excellent adsorption capacity to the phosphate ions, whereas montmorillonite had very low adsorption capacity to phosphate ions. In phosphate solution concentration up to 300 mg/L, 2 g of pillared clay could uptake almost 100% of phosphate ions from 20 mL of solution. After heat treatment of the phosphate adsorbed pillared clay at 50$0^{\circ}C$ to remove phosphate, the calcined pillared clay could adsorb phosphate ions with a little decreased adsorption efficiency. This fact indicates that Al-pillared clay can be recycled for the adsorption of phosphate ions.

  • Yellow to reddish brown soil is generally referred to as hwangto and is used in various industries in Korea. Despite the fact that it is used as an inorganic pigment in dancheong, limited studies have been conducted on the properties of pigments associated with soil and on the mineralogical characteristics of hwangto. This study examines how the pedological and mineralogical features of hwangto affect pigment properties. Results indicate that reddish and yellowish soils have differences in terms of soil texture, mineral composition, oil absorption and stability under light. Reddish soil is mostly found in clay regions, whereas Ulleungdo hwangto is found in loam regions. Yellowish soil is mostly present in the clay loam to loam zones. whereas Haenam hwangto exists in the sandy clay loam zone. As a result of a mineralogical analysis, reddish soil is classified into the feldspar group and clay soil. The major minerals in the yellowish soils are similar however these soils differ in terms of clay mineral compositions. results of the characteristics of pigments prepared by the traditional method revealed that the average particle size is in the range of 10-20 ㎛, reddish soil has an average of 20 ml/100 g higher oil absorption than yellowish soil. In addition, reddish soil is more susceptible to discoloration and deterioration under light than yellowish soil. This study confirms that the soil and mineral characteristics of hwangto affect the physical properties and stability of produced pigments. These result can be used as basic data in future studies natural inorganic pigments using hwangto.

  • Water pollution problems of urban rivers due to the urbanization and industrialization have been the subject of public attention. In particular, considering the fact that the characteristics of water cycle of each basin change dramatically through the development of new towns, a large number of concerns about future water quality have been raised. However, reasonable measures to predict future water quality quantitatively have not been presented by this moment. In this study, by the linkage of annual unit load generation based on long-term monitoring results of the ministry of environment (MOE) to a semi-distributed rainfall runoff model, SWMM (Storm Water Management Model), we proposed a new methodology to estimate future water quality macroscopically and testified it to verify its applicability for the estimation of future water quality of a small watershed at G new town. As a result of the estimation using Y-EMC (Yearly based Event Mean Concentration), future water quality were simulated as BOD 18.7, T-N 16.1 and T-P 0.85 mg/L respectively which could not achieve the grade III of domestic river life guidance and these criteria could be satisfied by the reduction of domestic wastewater discharge load by over 80%. The results of this study are shown to be utilized for one of basic tools to estimate and manage water quality of urban rivers in the course of new town developments.

  • Aluminum-pillared clay was prepared by the intercalation of Al-hydroxy oligomer into domestic bentonite. The solid products are characterized by XRD, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, EDX, and SEM. The solid products show relatively high specific surface areas in the range of $104{\sim}228m^2/g$, and their specific surface area, micropore surface area, and micropore volume increase with increasing the mole ratio of OH/Al. From the results of pore size distribution calculated by BJH equation, it was found that aluminum-pillared clay also contains much mesopore near $40{\AA}$. These results indicate that Al-hydroxy oligomer was intercalated into bentonite, and aluminum oxide was pillared among the layers of bentonite, and micropore and mesopore was finally developed into layers. As OH/Al mole ratio increases, the thermal stability of aluminum-pillared clay increases. This result can be explained by the fact that the density of layers is increased due to the formation of aluminum pillars.

  • A traditional Korean seafood (fermented anchovy) is made from the muscle and viscera of anchovies Engraulis japonica. This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of retorting condition on the quality of canned, salt-fermented anchovy fillet using red pepper paste with vinegar. Salt-fermented anchovy fillets were prepared by fermenting anchovies with salt (15%) at $5^{\circ}C$ for 15 days, and then cold air drying the fillets for 1 hour. Each batch of dried fermented anchovy fillets (60 g) was filled with 35 g of mixed red pepper paste with vinegar (red pepper paste 64%, vinegar 2%, starch syrup 13%, sugar 14%, coke 6%, soju 0.4%, crushed garlic 0.3%, ginger 0.3%), placed in a can (RR-90), seamed using a vacuum seamer, and sterilized for either Fo 9 or 11 min in a steam system retort at $121^{\circ}C$. After sterilization, we measured the pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), amino-N, color value (L, a, b), texture profile, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value, sensory evaluation, and viable bacterial count of the canned fillets. We did not detect viable bacterial counts in cans subjected to either sterilization treatment, and there was no difference in physicochemical and sensory quality between the two. In fact, most sensory evaluators reported difficulty distinguishing the products. Thus, our results show that sterilization for Fo 9 min is preferable to that for Fo 11 min in the preparation of canned salt-fermented anchovy fillet using red pepper paste with vinegar.

  • Nurturing students' scientific creativity is considered an important element in science education in Korea. The study aims to explore patterns displayed by well-known scientists in their quest for problem finding. Each case of scientists' course of problem solving is described in terms of historical background, a process of problem finding, and a process of problem solving. There are five patterns from ten scientists which are as follows: Pattern 1 is that scientists find problems from insufficiencies and/or errors from explanation of theories at the time and the related cases are A. Lavoisier, G. Mendel, and J. Watson. Pattern 2 shows that scientists find a problem because of strange phenomena unexplained by theories at the time, and here important case studies are E. Rutherford and W. R$\ddot{o}$ntgen. Pattern 3 demonstrates that scientists find a problem from analogical reasoning between known theories and unknown science phenomena. The cases include S. Carnot and T. Young. Pattern 4 points to the fact that scientists find a problem while they utilize a newly invented experimental instrument. Here, G. Galilei is an important example. Pattern 5 establishes that scientists happen to find a problem while they conduct research projects. The works of M. Faraday and J. Kepler are prominent case studies related to this pattern.

  • When the cattail pollen was identified by using fibrinolytic agents, we found that the fibrinolytic activity was controlled by an enzyme. Therefore, for determining the fibrinolytic activity of cattail pollen, the fibrinolytic enzyme in cattail pollen was purified by gel filtration using DEAE-cellulose, Sephadex G-150 and HPLC. Also, its purity was certified by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and its physico-chemical properties, such as pH and temperature stabilities and effects of metal, inhibitors and substrates, were examined. The specific activity, purification fold, and molecular weight of the enzyme were 38U/mg, 86.4,and 75kDa, respectively. The optimum pH for the purified enzyme was at 4.0 and it was stable at pH 4.0-6.0. The optimum temperature was $55^{\circ}C$ and it was stable at $30-60^{\circ}C$. But the enzyme began to be inactivated at $70^{\circ}C$ and its activity was totally lost at temperatures above $80^{\circ}C$. As for substrate specificity, the enzyme was most effective in dissolving fibrin, followed by whole casein, ${\kappa}$-casein, ${\alpha}$-casein, ${\beta}$-casein, and BSA. With casein as the substrate, Km value was found to be 0.44mM and the enzyme showed a high affinity for casein. As for the metal ions affecting enzyme activity, $K^+$, $Na^+$, and $Mg^{2+}$ had no effect on enzyme reaction while $Zn^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ showed potent inhibitory activity. Judging from the fact that the purified enzyme was also strongly inhibited by PMSF, iodoacetic acid, and SDA, it assumed to be a serine protease.
