  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify concentration characteristics of indoor and outdoor airborne total fiber particles and asbestos in Gyeongnam Provinces. Methods: This study investigated concentration characteristics of indoor fiber particles from 748 schools and 38 public facilities as well as outdoor particles from 11 sites through PCM (phase contrast microscope). SEM/EDX (scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive using X-ray analysis) was used to obtain physicochemical information of asbestos fiber particles. The study identified asbestos rate in the 15 samples from indoor and outdoor airborne total fiber particles. Results: 1. The average indoor airborne concentrations of total fiber particles were $0.0011{\pm}0007$ f/cc in schools and $0.0015{\pm}0007$ f/cc in public facilities by PCM. Over 90% of the fiber particles were identified as single fibers. 2. The average outdoor airborne concentrations of total fiber particles were $0.0007{\pm}0002$ f/cc, and they were lower than those of indoor airborne concentrations. 3. The results showed that the form of asbestiform was diverse as skein of thread like form and long needle, which was relatively narrower than that of glass fiber and rock wool. 4. The results of SEM/EDX analysis of 15 areas where total fiber particle was relatively high showed that the form was rather similar to that of asbestos, but chemical composition was proven to be non-asbestos. Conclusions: The concentration of indoor and outdoor airborne total fiber particles of Gyeongnam Provinces satisfied the IAQ (Indoor air quality) level of 0.01 f/cc and asbestos was not found in most of the samples by SEM/EDX.

  • The most important effect of refining is believed as the internal fibrillation. The internal fibrillation is the separation of the fiber wall into several lamellae. The internal fibrillation results in fiber swelling as water penetrates the fiber wall. The increase in paper strength as a result of refining was due to delamination which made the fiber more flexible. Pulp fibers are refined to 20, 40, and 70$^{\circ}$SR freeness at Valley beater. Changes of Physical paper properties are analyzed depending on fiber wall thickness and fiber's collapse index at 2.5 and 5.6kg$_f$ refining load. At same $^[\circ}$SR freeness with 2.5kg$_f$ refining load, fiber wall thickness is increased further than at high 5.6kg$_f$ refining load. With higher fiber wall thickness by lower intensity refining load, higher internal fibrillation, flexibility, collapsability of fibers are achieved. Those effects improve WRV, tensile strength, and burst strength. Tear strength shows opposite trend to tensile and burst strength as usual.

  • A radio over fiber (RoF) system is a kind of analog optical transmission system and considered as a strong candidate for the next-generation fronthaul link in the future mobile network. In RoF systems, nonlinearity compensation is essential to increase the link capacity. In this paper, we propose a nonlinearity detection and compensation scheme using a monitoring channel in RoF systems. A monitoring channel is added at the transmitter site and used for transmitting a reference signal in an RoF transmission. The nonlinearity in the RoF transmission is detected by comparing the received monitoring signal and the original reference signal at the receiver site. Finally, the nonlinearity is compensated at the receiver by giving the reverse function of the detected nonlinearity. Our results show that the proposed scheme can almost remove the error vector magnitude degradation induced by the nonlinearity in the RoF system.

  • Objectives: The present study is aimed at performing real-time measurement of fibrous materials using an F-1 fiber monitor, investigating the correlations between the measurements and environmental conditions, and assessing the feasibility of the use of the monitor in actual exposure assessments based on the accuracy and reliability of the device. Methods: Asbestos specimens with a fixed asbestos content were dispersed in a chamber and collected with a particle measuring test device. Measurements obtained by the existing PCM method, and with the F-1 fiber monitor were compared. In addition, concentrations of asbestos fibers obtained by the PCM method, the TEM method, and the F-1 fiber monitor were compared with that of specific ABS scenarios in NOA regions. Correlations of asbestos contents in soil and weather conditions with each method of measurement were analyzed. Results: Laboratory results showed that levels of asbestos fibers measured with each method increased as fiber contents in soil increased. In the accuracy and reproducibility assessment, no significant differences were found between the different methods of measurement. On-site assessment results showed positive correlations among the methods, and these correlations were less significant compared with what was shown by the laboratory results. Levels of asbestos fibers increased as asbestos contents in soil increased, and as temperature increased. Levels of asbestos fibers decreased as humidity increased, and wind speed did not significantly affect the extent to which asbestos fibers were scattered. Conclusions: While it would be premature to replace existing methods with the use of F-1 fiber monitors in real sites based on the results of this study, the monitor may be useful in the screening of the sites, which assesses hazard levels in different regions. Replacement of existing methods with the use of F-1 fiber monitors may be possible after the limitations identified in this study are overcome, and additional assessment data are obtained and reviewed under different conditions to confirm the reliability of the monitor in future research. Obtained assessment results may be used as basic data for the assessment of asbestos hazard in NOA regions.

  • An Ge/B-doped optical fiber with high photosensitivity was fabricated to induce large second-order optical nonlinearity by UV poling. It was found that long period fiber gratings were inscribed on the fiber by the 248 nm KrF excimer laser irradiation with pulse energy of 116 mJ/$cm^2$ and pulse frequency of 10 Hz without hydrogen loading treatment. The photosensitivity was measured by use of the long period fiber grating pair method and the refractive index change of 3.3$10{\times}^{-3}$ was found to be induced in the core of the optical fiber by the KrF excimer laser irradiation of 8.67 kJ/$cm^2$. An H-shaped optical fiber was also fabricated for the UV poling through optimization of the fiber drawing condition.

  • In this paper, hybrid fibers including high elastic modulus steel fiber and low elastic modulus synthetic macro-fiber (HPP) as two elements were used as reinforcement materials in concrete. The flexural toughness, flexural impact and fracture performance of the composites were investigated systematically. Flexural impact strength was analyzed with statistic analyses method; based on ASTM and JSCE method, an improved flexural toughness evaluating method suitable for concrete with synthetic macro-fiber was proposed herein. The experimental results showed that when the total fiber volume fractions ($V_f^a$) were kept as a constant ($V_f^a=1.5%$), compared with single type of steel or HPP fibers, hybrid fibers can significantly improve the toughness, flexural impact life and fracture properties of concrete. Relative residual strength RSI', impact ductile index ${\lambda}$ and fracture energy $G_F$ of concrete combined with hybrid fibers were respectively 66-80%, 5-12 and 121-137 N/m, which indicated that the synergistic effects (or combined effects) between steel fiber and synthetic macro-fiber were good.

  • In this paper, the ploarization and Faraday rotation properties of the single mode optical fiber have been investigated for magnto-optic current transformer application. On the analysis, the optical fiber is modeled as a linear retarder and the intrinsic birefreingence of the optical fiber is approximately found to be 2.57'/m from the measurement, and the bend-induced birefringence is proportional to the inverse square of bending radius. The polarization rotation sensitivity is foung to be F/H=1.4x$10^-5$rad/[A/m] from the analysis of Faraday rotation of single mode optical fiber.

  • Millimeter over Fiber (MMoF) technique modulates millimeter wave signal optically to transmit it through an optical fiber for long distances with small loss. MMoF system usually uses optical single sideband (OSSB) modulation scheme to reduce fiber chromatic dispersion and obtain high bandwidth efficiency. The optical link of MMoF system using OSSB is treated as a nonlinear amplifier, and the AM/AM characteristic function of the amplifier is a Bessel function of the first kind of order 1. In this paper, we investigate the performance of OFDM MMoF system considering nonlinearity of OSSB modulation. We estimate a power of the nonlinear distortion noise to analyze the theoretical bit error rate(BER), and perform a simulation to verify the theoretical BER.

  • It has been reported that FRP (fiber reinforced plastic) can be recycled by separating into layers instead of crushing into powder. F-fiber obtained from roving layer separated from FRP, has bigger tensile strength than the bundle of glass fibers of which FRP was made (more than 90%). SEM image of F-fiber shows the presence of some resin. Under the proposition of usage of F-fiber in the concrete material, tensile strength is examined after soaking in a basic solution (NaOH+KOH). The reaction mechanism of strength loss may be considered as an attack of hydroxide ion ($OH^-$) on a chemical bond of Si-O-Si of glass fiber. The simulation graph of the strength loss data implies certain reaction mechanism. While in the early stage kinetically controlled reaction results in a fast drop of tensile strength, after 30 days dispersion rate of hydroxide ion plays a major role in strength loss. This result is similar to the one for the AR glass. An extrapolation of the graph would make an assumption about the lift time of F-fiber possible.

  • Objective: Substituting starch with digestible fiber (dF) can improve digestive health of rabbits and reduce costs. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a criterion for dF and starch supply. Effects of the dietary dF-to-starch ratio on pellet quality, growth and cecal microbiota of Angora rabbits were evaluated. Methods: Five isoenergetic and isoproteic diets with increasing dF/starch ratios (0.59, 0.66, 0.71, 1.05, and 1.44) were formulated. A total of 120 Angora rabbits with an average live weight of 2.19 kg were randomly divided into five groups with four replicates. At the end of 40 day feeding trial, cecal digesta were collected to analyse microbiota. Results: The results showed that the dF/starch ratio had linear effects on pellet variables (p<0.01). When the dF/starch ratio was 1.44, the pellets had the lowest powder and highest durability. The dF/starch ratio had unfavorable linear effects on growth variables (p<0.001). When analyzed by quadratic regression, the optimal dF/starch ratios for average weight gain and feed/gain were 0.59 and 0.74, respectively. There were differences in wool yield, fiber length and fiber diameter caused by the dF/starch ratio (p<0.05), and the dF/starch ratios that ranged from 0.66 to 1.06 were appropriate for good results. The cecal microbiota operational taxonomic unit (OTU) number index in the 1.05 dF/starch treatment was higher than that in the 0.66 and 0.71 dF/starch treatments. The higher dF/starch ratio resulted in a higher cecal microbiota OTU number index (p<0.05). The proportion of Ruminococcus in the 0.71 dF/starch treatment was higher than that in the 0.59 dF/starch treatment (p<0.05) Conclusion: The most suitable dF/starch ratio for feed pellet quality is 1.44, and for rabbit growth the optimal range of ratios is from 0.59 to 0.74. With combination of the wool growth, output cost, and cecal microbiota, we suggest that a dietary dF/starch ratio ranging from 0.74 to 1.06 is optimal.
