  • The purposes of this research are to examine soil pollution in the nation and to explore the contaminated soil management of the public housing agency in public land for residential development. In so doing, the primary and secondary data were utilized, the former made use of the public data annually released by the Korea Ministry of Environment, and the latter relied on a self-administerd questionnaire survey conducted in the staff of the public housing agency, particularly those in charge of soil contamination in large-scale land, housing and urban development projects. The findings reveal that the national concentrations of 21 inorganic and organic soil contaminants (e.g., Cd, Cu, As, Hg, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni, F, P, PCB, CN, Phenol, BTEX, TPH, TCE, PCE, Benzo(a)pyrene, and pH) in the land were extracted to be well below the risk level designated by the statutory guidance while industrial areas had them at a relatively modest level. In addition, the survey results indicate that the public housing agency didn't establish specific and clear guidelines for soil pollution and its remediation in the residential land development, so that contaminated sites have been primarily remediated by outsourcing companies. As the unexpected occurrence of contaminated sites causes the incurring expenses added to total project budget, the provision of both professional training and on-site manuals with the sufficient information on techniques and methods of soil contamination is critical to promptly and systematically deal with soil pollution.

  • Seven rice varieties and $42F_1$ hybrids of $7{\times}7$ diallel cross were used in genetic analysis for grain size, weight and shape. Effects of average heterosis for grain length and shape showed significantly negative values. GCA, SCA and RCA variances were significant for all characters and also additive variance was more important than dominance variance for grain length, width, thickness and weight. GCA effects of BG 2 and Arborio were highly positive for grain size and weight, and those of BG 2 and Nagdongbyeo were highly negative for grain shape. Partial dominance was observed for all characters. The direction of dominance was negative for grain length, width and shape, and ambidirections for grain thickness and weight. The effective gene number was two for grain length and shape. Both narrow and broad sense heritability were high in all characters.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing cultural competency after analyzing the relationship between global citizenship and cultural competency in 169 nursing students of G city. The data were collected with self-reported questionnaires and analyzed with SPSS 24.0 program which was used for descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. The total mean score of the participants' global citizenship was 3.68 out of 5 points, and cultural competency 3.06 out of 5 points. There was a significant relationship between global community concept (r=.48, p<.001), multinationalism (r=.42, p<.001), general citizenship (r=.27, p<.001), national identity (r=.32, p<.001) in sub-areas of global citizenship, and cultural competency. Other significant factors were global community concept, multinationalism, and national identity, which explained 29% of cultural competency. The findings indicate that the higher global citizenship, the higher the cultural competency. And global community concept, multinationalism, general citizenship, and national identity in sub-areas of global citizenship affected the cultural competence. Therefore, a cultural competency education program designed for nursing students should focus on these factors for enhancing cultural competency.

  • Combustion of the Korean Anthracite and wood-pellet was characterized in air atmosphere with variation of heating rate(5, 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C/min$) in TGA. The results of TGA have shown that the combustion of the wood-pellet occurred in the temperature range of $200{\sim}620^{\circ}C$ which is much lower than that of Korean anthracite. Activation energies of the wood-pellet and Korean anthracite, determined by using Friedman method were 44.12, 21.45 kcal/mol respectively. Also, their reaction orders(n) and pre-exponential factors(A) were 5.153, 0.7453 and $4.01{\times}10^{16}$, $1.39{\times}10^6(s^{-1})$ respectively. In order to find out the combustion mechanism of the wood-pellet and Korean anthracite, twelve solidstate mechanisms defined by Coats Redfern Method were tested. The solid state combustion mechanisms of the woodpellet and Korean anthracite were found to be sigmoidal curve A3 type and a deceleration curve F1 type respectively. Also, from iso-thermal combustion($300{\sim}900^{\circ}C$) of their char, the combustion characteristics of their char was found. Activation energies of the their char were 27.5, 51.2 kcal/mol respectively. Also, pre-exponential factors(A) were $2.55{\times}10^{12}$, $1.49{\times}10^{10}(s^{-1})$ respectively. Due to the high combustion reactivity of wood-pellet compared with Korean anthracite, combustion atmosphere will be improved by co-combustion with Korean anthracite and wood-pellet.

  • Landslides, as a geological hazard, have caused extensive damage to property and sometimes result in loss of life. Thus, it is necessary to assess vulnerable areas for future possible landslides in order to mitigate the damage they cause. For this purpose, spatial data integration has been developed and applied to landslide hazard mapping. Among various models, this paper investigates and discusses the effectiveness of the Bayesian spatial data integration approach to landslide hazard mapping. In this study, several data sets related to landslide occurrences in Jangheung, Korea were constructed using GIS and then digitally represented using the likelihood ratio function. By computing the likelihood ratio, we obtained quantitative relationships between input data and landslide occurrences. The likelihood ratio functions were combined using the Bayesian combination rule. In order for predicted results to provide meaningful interpretations with respect to future landslides, we carried out validation based on the spatial partitioning of the landslide distribution. As a result, the Bayesian approach based on a likelihood ratio function can effectively integrate various spatial data for landslide hazard mapping, and it is expected that some suggestions in this study will be helpful to further applications including integration and interpretation stages in order to obtain a decision-support layer.

  • The resistance to Tobamovirus in Capsicum spp. has been known to be controlled by five different alleles ($L^0$, $L^1$, $L^2$, $L^3$, and $L^4$) of L locus on the telomere of long arm of pepper chromosome 11. To develop a set of molecular markers differentiating all the alleles of L locus, we used five pepper differential hosts including Capsicum annuum Early California Wonder (ECW, $L^0L^0$), C. annuum Tisana ($L^1L^1$), C. annuum Criollo de Morelos 334 (CM334, $L^2L^2$), Capsicum chinense PI 159236 ($L^3L^3$), and Capsicum chacoense PI 260429 ($L^4L^4$). Developing a series of CAPS or SCAR markers specifically linked to the alleles was allowed by the sequence comparison of PCR amplicons of the $L^3$-linked markers (189D23M, A339, and 253A1R) and BAC sequences (FJ597539 and FJ597541) in the pepper differentials. Genotypes deduced by these markers in 48 out of 53 $F_1$ hybrids of commercial pepper varieties were consistent with their phenotypes by bioassay using Tobamovirus pathotypes ($P_0$, $P_1$, and $P_{1,2$). Consequently, these markers can be useful to differentiate L alleles and for breeding Tobamovirus resistance in pepper with marker-assisted selection.

  • Molecular methods were employed to investigate microorganisms in a thermophilic continuous stirred tank reactor(CSTR) used for continuous $H_2$ production. The reactor was inoculated with heat-treated anaerobic sludge and fed with a glucose-based medium. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis showed dynamic changes of bacterial populations in the reactor during 43 days of operation. Gas composition was constant from approximately 14 days but population shift still occurred. Populations affiliated with Fervidobactrium gondwanens and Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum were dominant on 21 and 41 days, respectively. Keeping pH of the medium at 5.0 could suppress methanogenic activity that was detected during initial operation period. $CH_4$ and mcrA detected in the samples obtained from the reactor or inoculum suggested the heat treatment condition employed in this study is not enough to remove methanogens in the inoculum. PCR using primer sets specific to 4 main orders of methanogens suggested that major $H_2$-consuming methanogens in the CSTR belong to the order Methanobacteriales.

  • With the recent enlargement and complication of buildings, damage caused by the incidents of fires breaking out are escalating. Consequently, the use of sprinkler facilities is increasing among water-based fire extinguishing systems. Piping materials used in fire prevention systems include carbon steel (for general or pressure pipeline), CPVC, copper, and stainless-steel. Among these, the steel and CPVC pipes, which are commonly employed in fire prevention, were considered for testing the reliability of the water-based systems. This analysis was performed using the PIPENET software to perform hydraulic calculations in order to examine the flow and pressure at the terminal head when the corrosion coefficient was applied; this coefficient was applied considering the aging of pipes. Assuming a uniform pipe diameter in the steel pipes, the rated flow in the pump installed on the first floor of the basement was reduced by over 10% after 20 years had passed (C value of 90); moreover, the reduction in pressure and flow at its terminal head exceeded 30% and 16.5%, respectively. The results indicate that it is difficult to ensure the reliability of these fire prevention facilities. Furthermore, according to our estimation, considering 30 years had passed (C value of 80), the rated flow of the pump was reduced by over 15%, and the corresponding reduction in pressure and flow at its terminal head exceeded 42% and 24%, respectively.

  • This study conducted the survey on the resources of traditional villages based on AHP in the subjects with the specialists in Korea and China to seek the resource evaluation standards to apply the preservation and development of traditional villages, and the differences of the importance on the resources among the specialists in both countries. We classified three levels of evaluation items to aim the deductions of the importance and priority in the resources of traditional villages. Upon the analysis results, natural resources were important in the level 1; environmental, historical, facility resources were important in the level 2; and the factors such as air, topography, traditional houses, agricultural landscape, shared community facilities, interchanges between urban and rural areas, family activities, and so on were important in the level 3. The factors that both Korean and Chinese groups evaluated as the most important ones were the same. In terms of overall importance by evaluation items, the factors such as air, water quality, noise, traditional houses, topography, shared community facilities, and so on were rated as relatively important in both Korean and Chinese groups. That is, the traditional villages have the necessity to preserve the cultural resources like their duties, however, it is required to control the natural environment with good quality preferentially. This study results can compare the importance on the resources of traditional village between Korea and China. Moreover, with calculation of the priority and scores for the preservation and management of traditional villages, they are expected to be used as the tool to apply the quantitative data in the evaluation process of traditional village resources in both countries.

  • Sri Lanka is an island nation susceptible to climate-related disasters and extreme weather events. Kurunegala City is the developing capital city of the North-Western Province of Sri Lanka. Changes in rainfall patterns and a steadily increasing annual average temperature amounting to 0.69±0.37℃ were observed in the city area. Generally, urban areas are at risk due to the lack of climate change adaptation provisions incorporated in the development plans. This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of Krunegala City, Sri Lanka and develop an appropriate climate change adaptation plan for the city. Site investigation and qualitative risk assessment were conducted to devise a plan relevant to the climate change adaptation needs of the city. Qualitative risk analyses revealed that drinking water, water resources, and health and infrastructure risks were among the major concerns in Kurunegala City. Low impact development (LID) technologies were found to be applicable to induce non-point source pollutant reduction, relieve urban heat island phenomenon, and promote sound water circulation systems. These technologies can be effective means of alleviating water shortage and reducing urban temperature. The measures and strategies presented in this study can serve as reference for developing climate change adaptation plans in areas experiencing similar adverse effects of climate change.
