  • The genetic diversity and population structures of fourteen Carex okamotoi (Cyperaceae) populations in Korea were determined using genetic variation at 25 allozyme loci. The Carex okamotoi species is native to Korea. It is endemic to three mountains (Mt. Taeback, Mt. Sobak, and Mt. Noreong) where it is found at 700~1,500 m above sea level. The percentage of polymorphic loci was 40.0%. Genetic diversity at the species level and at the population level was low ($H_{ES}$=0.106; $H_{EP}$=0.094), and the extent of the population divergence was relatively low ($G_{ST}$=0.082). Measurement of deviation from random mating ($F_{IS}$) within the 14 populations was 0.238. An indirect estimate of the number of migrants per generation was 2.78 (Nm=2.78). Analysis of fixation indices revealed a substantial heterozygosity deficiency in some populations and at some loci. Mean genetic identity between populations was 0.986.

  • We propose a simulation technique to estimate the reduction effect of the pressure/flow pulsation by analysis of the pulsation variables and notch shape of the valve plate of a swash-plate-type variable piston pump. First, using SimulationX$^{(R)}$, we perform a theoretical kinematic analysis according to the variable swash-plate angle and rotational velocity in order to design a single-piston pump. In designing the notch shape of the valve plate of the swash-plate-type variable piston pump as one of the pulsation variables, we investigate the effect of the pulsation by comparing two notch types (circular type and V type). Then, we extend our analysis to a nine-piston pump model. This paper not only confirms the effect of the pressure/flow pulsation according to pulsation variables but can also be applied to the development of a SimulationX$^{(R)}$-based simulation technique for notch-shape optimization for a swash-plate-type variable piston pump.

  • This study sorted scores of individual characteristics and multiple intelligence by sex, handle, blood type and age through previous questionnaire with 462 adult males and females. Then electrode was attached to prefrontal lobes Fp1 and Fp2 with EEG measuring system and changes of concentration between no stimulation state and pure pink noise stimulation and their relations to multiple intelligence were examined. As a result of analysis of covariance, the mean concentration of all subjects was significantly higher in the pink noise stimulation compared to no stimulation. According to individual characteristics, concentration was significantly higher in left-hander, type A blood, and group in their thirties except for gender. Concentration in pink noise state strengthened the relation to spatial intelligence and made negative correlations with musical intelligence compared to no stimulation state. These results suggested that individual characteristics should be reflected on using pink noise for improving concentration.

  • Chalcones are naturally occurring, biologically active molecules generating interest from a wide range of research applications including synthetic methodology development, biological activity investigation and studying fragmentation patterns. In this article, a series of chalcones has been synthesized and their fragmentation behavior was studied using modern ambient ionization technique Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART). DART ion source connected with an ion trap mass spectrometer was used for the fragmentation of various substituted chalcones. The chalcones were introduced to the DART source using a glass capillary without sample preparation step. All the chalcones showed prominent molecular ion peaks $[M]^{{\cdot}+}$ corresponding to the structures. Multistage mass spectral data $MS^n$ ($MS^2$ and $MS^3$) were collected for all the chalcones studied. The chalcones with substitutions at 3, 4 or 5 positions gave product ion peaks with the loss of a phenyl radical ($Ph^{\cdot}$) by radical initiated ${\alpha}$-cleavage, while substitution at 2 position of chalcone in the A-ring gave a product ion peak with the loss of substituted styryl radical (PhCH = $CH^{\cdot}$). In case of the chalcones with the substituent at 4 positions in A and B rings gave both types of fragmentation patterns. In conclusion, chalcones can be easily characterized using modern DART interface in very short time and efficiently without any cumbersome sample pretreatment.
