  • As many industrial workers have been involved with computer terminal tasks, for example, monitor ing, inspection, or computer da4a entry etc., concerns for difficulty evaluation of computer terminal tasks are Increased. This study provides that eyeblink can be used as a means of difficulty evaluation of a computer terminal lask. Four subjects without color blindness are asked to perform the monitoring task of the binary choice type under five levels of task difficulty. In each task, eyeblink rates and eyeblink interval times were measured from the subjects. The results show that the eyeblink rate does decrease with an Increase in task difficulty. In addition, it was found that both eyeblink interval time and eyeblink Interval time variation increased with an increase in task difficulty. It was concluded that the change of eyeblink rate, eyeblink interval time and eyeblink interval time and eyeblink interval time variation could be regarded as a generalized response to the imposition of task difficulty.

  • In current study on 8 college students there was examined modulation of eyeblink (as measured by integrated EMG of m.orbicularis oculi) and skin conductance response (SCR) to an acoustic startle probe (85 dB[A] white noise) by attending to task presented in auditory modality (to memorize words for further recognition) and entire performance of the word recognition test. Both eyeblink magnitude and SCR amplitude and rise time to startle probes were modified (larger magnitude of EMG peak, lower amplitude and shorter rise time of SCR) during attending to task as compared to performance on test. Results are interpreted n terms of modification of electrodermal and eyeblink components of startle and orienting reflexes by task characteristics (passive versus active efforts), attentional demands and aversiveness of experimental situation. However, eyeblink startle response manifested potentiation during attending to task, while SCR demonstrated attenuation. There are discussed implications of startle modulatioas a potentially sensitive probe of situational demands in stress research and also are considered prospects for further studies.

  • The primary purpose of this review is to present an overview of relationship between human spontaneous eyeblinking and internal cognitive processes. The second purpose is to address the neural substrates of human eyeblinking based on recent studies focusing on the central dopaminergic system and to explore the significance of spontaneous eyeblinks in neuropsychiatric disorders. We reviewed recent and previous studies on eyeblink patterns under various cognitive tasks. We also reviewed neural substrates of eyeblinking, particularly based on the central dopaminergic system. This paper suggests that spontaneous eyeblinks are highly correlated with various cognitive processes and the activity of central dopaminergic system. Various neuropsychiatric disorders are related to the alteration of the occurrence of eyeblinking. Spontaneous eyeblinking is the unique human behavior that occurs regularly without conscious effort. It is known that the rate of eyeblinking is modulated by internal cognitive processes and dopamine-related neuropsychiatric disorders. Further research is required to how the temporal dynamics of spontaneous eyeblinking is correlated with the disease activity and progression.

  • Password with a combination of 4-digit numbers has been widely adopted for various authentication systems (such as credit card authentication, digital door lock systems and so on). However, this system could not be safe because the 4-digit password can easily be stolen by predicting it from the fingermarks on the keypad or display screen. Furthermore, due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, contactless method has been preferred over contact method in authentication. This paper suggests a new password input method based on eyeblink pattern analysis in video sequence. In the proposed method, when someone stands in front of a camera, the sequence of eyeblink motions is captured (according to counting signal from 0 to 9 or 9 to 0), analyzed and encoded, producing the desired 4-digit decimal numbers. One does not need to touch something like keypad or perform an exaggerated action, which can become a very important clue for intruders to predict the password.

  • This paper describes the relationship among physiological, behavioral signal, and subjective evaluation depending on arousal level. Nz and reaction time hall similar pattern with KSS level, but eyeblink rate was different from these two parameters. Eyeblink rate increased slowly from KSS level 1 to 5, and had high increasing rate at KSS 7. But it showed steep descent at KSS level 9. From the result of reaction time test, since human performance was decreased rapidly above the KSS level 5, it is desirable to give a subject some stimulus such as sound or aroma to rise arousal level above the KSS level 3.

  • This paper proposes a control method of ASMR(autonomous sensory meridian response) contents to relieve user's stress and improve his attention. The proposed method measures EEG(electroencephalography), attention, meditation, and eyeblink data from an EEG device and sends them to an oneM2M-compliant IoT(internet of things) server platform through an Android IoT Application. Then a SVM(support vector machine) model is built to classify user's mental health status by using EEG, attention and meditation data collected in the server platform. The ASMR contents are controlled by the mental health status classified by a SVM model and the eyeblink data. When comparing the SVM models according to types of data used, the SVM model with attention and meditation data showed accuracy of 85.7%. It was verified that the proposed control algorithm of ASMR contents properly worked as the mental health status from the SVM model and the eyeblink data changed.

  • Objectives: Eyeblinking varied depending on individual cognitive abilities or personality traits thought to related to brain mechanisms of sensory modulation. This study explored whether personality traits are related to the rate of eye blinks and how eyeblink and evoked potential augumenting-reducing(EPAR) interact Methods: Forty four students were studied with EPAR topography to explore how eyeblinks, personality and EPAR interact The Zuckerman Sensation Seeking Scale(SSS) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) were used as personality measured by a stimulus response program during EP study. Results: Rate of blink increased as intensity of light increased. The General(GEN), Thrill and Adventure Seeking(TAS), Experience Seeking(ES) and Disinhibition(DS) subscales in SSS and Extraversion-Introversion(E) subscale in EPQ showed significant negative correlations with number of eyeblinks in the hightest intensity of light, whereas Neuroticism(N) subscales in EPQ showed a positive correlation. Correlation between number of eyeblinks with the brightest light and EPAR slope varied topographically. The strongest positive correlation was noted in right posterior temporal area. Conclusion: High sensation seekers blinked significantly fewer times than lower sensation seeker did. Higher personality correlations with eyeblink than with EP may imply that the eyeblink works as a primary filter since it is more directly related to central mechanisms of sensory modulation than EP. The right posterior temporal area may play an important role in modulation of visual stimuli.

  • Driving is a complex vigilance task that includes improper lookout, excessive speed and inattention. The primary objective of this research is to detect driver drowsiness so that the driver can be alerted to an impending traffic accident in performance. We developed the automatic detection and warning system during drowsy driving. A drowsiness detection system must be able to monitor driver status and detect the detrimental changes of a driver performance. Eyeblink has been found to be a reliable factor of drowsiness detection in earlier studies. As an additional parameter, we also considered the yawning which often occurs in a low vigilance state and predicts the drowsy state. We used a computer vision method to extract the eyeblink and yawning in the face image sequences. When the drowsy state was detected, the driver was refreshed by alarming device and menthol scent generator after deciding the warning level by fuzzy logic. For the evaluation of our system, we measured the physiological parameters such as EOG and EEG. The results indicated that it is possible to detect and alert the driver drowsiness temporarily or continuously by using our system.

  • We investigated the physiological patterns of cybersickness in a Virtual Reality(VR). Subject were exposed to the VR for 9.5 min, and required to detect specific virtual objects. Sixteen electrophysiological signals were recorded before, during, and after the virtual navigation. five questionnaires on the VR experience were acquired form 61 healthy subjects. During the virtual navigation, subjects with the high cybersickness susceptibility showed significant physiological changes, which included increased gastric tachyarrhythmia, eyeblink frequency, and EEG delta wave and decreased EEG beta wave. These results suggest that cybersickness may induce or accompany the changes in central nervous system and autonomic nervous system. Also, these results suggest that there may be increased sympathetic activation in autonomic drive for cybersickness.
