  • This paper presents a theoretical study of transmission performance for optical duobinary transmitters employed a Mach-Zehnder modulator. Especially, we have investigated the performance of the various transmitters for transmitting 25Gbps optical duobinary signals at a wavelength of 1550nm without any dispersion compensation methods over single mode fiber. Due to the characteristics of generating their duobinary signals, each transmitter has a distinct optical power spectrum and an eye opening shape. By these, there was a difference in the dispersion tolerance. We could find a suitable transmitter for 25Gbps transmission considering the structure complexities and the restricted conditions with the simulation results.

  • A modeling methodology for the analysis of injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LDs), promising for cost-effective WDM-PON sources, is proposed. The time-domain large-signal model that is used is found to provide quite similar results to some experimental ones. With our methodology, we model characteristics of FP-LDs, such as influence of reflectivity at a facet and detuning on injection-locking. The eye diagram characteristics are also investigated. It is observed that the facet reflectivity at the injection side should be lower than 1% to provide stable operation in terms of good side-mode suppression ratio and independence from detuning between narrow-band injection noise and LD modes. It is also observed that good eye opening can be obtained for 155 Mbps modulation while the parameters such as the active region thickness should be properly optimized to obtain reasonable eye opening at 1.25 Gbps.

  • We need a good image of the retina of the human eye in order to inspect or cure it. In this work, an optical system design for a retinal camera is studied and the finite schematic eye model made by Sang Gee Kim and Sung Chan Park is used. The optical system is composed of four lens groups. The rays of the entire object field are collected on the center by the 1st group and the objective is imaged by all the other groups. The image is detected by the CCD array and displayed by a monitor The 1st lens group is employed singlet and other groups are employed triplets. Ray aberrations, spot diagrams, diffraction line spread functions and MTFs are calculated for optical performance assessment. This design may be very useful for the development of a retinal camera with high performance.

  • This paper presents the performance analysis of 10[Gb/s] optical duobinary transmitters with the non-ideal Mach-Zehnder modulator which does not have exactly 50/50 splitting/combining ratios by computer simulations. For driving voltage ratios(=driving voltage/switching voltage) with smaller than 100[%], the transmission performance has been greatly affected by extension of LPF bandwidths. Nevertheless, the performance has been degraded when the driving voltage ratio is 100[%]. The smaller driving voltage ratios has, the more sensitivity improves by extension of LPF bandwidths under the asymmetry condition. But the driving voltage ratio with 80[%] has better bit error rate(BER) than those with 50[%] and 25[%].

  • The transmission performance of 10Gb/s optical duobinary transmitters implemented by using a Mach-Zehnder(MZ) modulator and an optical delay interferometer is presented. We investigated the theoretical impact of transmission systems by the modulator driving voltage ratio(=driving voltage/switching voltage) and the optical interferometer time delay to improve transmission distance using computer simulation. By reducing the driving voltage ratio and optimizing the partial bit time delay, the transmission performance has been improved greatly.

  • In this paper, we proposed a novel encoder/decoder for an optical CDMA(code division multiple access) system by using an array of SSFBGs(superstructured fiber Bragg gratings). The feasibility of the system is shown by the simulations. The Q-factor for the system was 14.53 dB when the well-known Gold codes are used.

  • We propose a novel driver circuit design using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process technology that drives a 1550 nm high-speed VCSEL used in optical transceiver. We report a distinct improvement in bandwidth, voltage gain and eye diagram at 3.1Gb/s data rate in comparison with existing topology. In this paper, the design and layout of a 3.1Gb/s VCSEL driver for optical transceiver having arrayed multi-channel of integrating module is confirmed.

  • In this paper, we present the fabrication of 40 Gb/s traveling-wave electroabsorption modulator-integrated laser (TW-EML) modules. A selective area growth method is first employed in 40 Gb/s EML fabrication to simultaneously provide active layers for lasers and modulators. The 3 dB bandwidth of a TW-EML module is measured to be 34 GHz, which is wider than that of a lumped EML module. The 40 Gb/s non-return-to-zero eye diagram shows clear openings with an average output power of +0.5 dBm.

  • We have theoretically investigated the asymmetry effects on 10[Gb/s] optical duobinary transmitters from the viewpoint of the driving voltage ratios by computer simulations. For driving voltage ratios(=driving voltage/switching voltage) with smaller than 100[%], the transmission performance has been greatly affected by the asymmetry of the bandwidth of LPFs than that of the Mach-Zehnder Modulator driving voltage. On the other hand, for driving voltage ratios with 100[%], the transmission performance has been degraded by the asymmetry of the driving voltage and is not sensitive to that of the bandwidth of LPFs. For the transmission performance within 1[dB] power penalty under the asymmetry condition, the driving voltage ratio with 100[%] has performed better than the low driving voltage ratios.
