Humans are environmentally exposed to various electromagnetic fields, but the evaluation of the harmfulness of electromagnetic field and the development of a system therefor are still incomplete. We aimed to develop a system for evaluating biohazard against electromagnetic fields, and to determine biohazard through the system. An extremely-low frequency magnetic field generator was designed and manufactured, and the output reliability of the device was verified. Using this device, the effect on the formation of cellular stress-granules and the cell cycle progression of cells exposed to high magnetic fields of 6 mT and 60 Hz was confirmed. As a result, exposure to high magnetic fields of 6 hr, 12 hr and 36 hr did not affect the formation of cell stress-induced granules and the cell division cycle. These results are an important basis for the determination of biohazard to the extremely-low frequency high magnetic field.

Acute effects of locally applied of static magnetic field (SMF) and extremely low frequency electromagnetic field(ELF-EMF) to the cutaneous tissue within a rabbit ear chamber (REC)were evaluated under conscious conditions. Rabbits with the REC were subjected to intravital microscopical investigation by use of microphotoelectric plethysmography(MPPG). There was no dose-response relationship between the extent of vasomotion changes and frequencies(0,20,50, 100Hz)or power levels (1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200 mT). Under low vascular tone the both fields induce vasodilatation. The effects of SMF (1 mT) on the cutaneous microcirculatory system induced the vasodilatation with enhanced vasomotion under nor-adrenaline-induced high vascular tone as well as the vasoconstriction with reduced vasomotion under acetylcholine-induced low vascular tone. This suggests that the SMF can modulate vascular tone due to the modification of vasomotion biphasically in the cutaneous tissue.
Recently, Peoples are exposed the ELF(Extremely Low Frequency) magnetic fields in the vicinity of underground transmission lines, and there are the generally accepted opinion that the magnetic fields affect the human body and there are possibility of the disease. Also in relation to this problem, technical solution methods and research are advanced for reducing the magnetic fields. In this paper, to practically understand the magnetic fields underground transmission lines, We analyze the electromagnetic field distribution in the underground transmission lines by means of FEM(Finite Element Methods) and present that improvement of the effective shielding methods by applying cable arrangements and shielding materials, eddy current problem to the underground transmission lines by means of the numerical analysis Tool.

A number of studies have demonstrated recently nonthermal interactions of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields with cellular systems, such as the cells of the immune system. Particular concern came from epidemiological findings, which correlated environmental exposure of human body to weak electromagnetic fields with an elevated risk for developing certain type of leukemias and cancers. Several home/environmental sources generating extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields, such as 50 - 60 Hz high-voltage transmission lines, video display terminals, electric blankets, clinical nuclear magnetic resonance imaging procedures, etc., may interact with the human body. In this study we examined the effects of static magnetic fields (SMF) on the phagocytosis of the murine peritoneal macrophages (C57BL/6). The cells were exposed in vitro for 24 h at 37$^{\circ}C$ to 400 G SMF. The phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages was determined with a luminometer. Exposure to the SMF decreased phagocytic activity of murine peritoneal macrophages. In order to provide a more exact mechanism of the phenomenon, we analyzed peritoneal macrophages for alteration in their proteomes. The expression levels of these 5 proteins were increased in the SMF. In total 5 proteins which were differentially expressed in the SMF compared with control group were identified. The expression levels of these 5 proteins were increased in the SMF.

The magnetic field of the extremely low frequency that occurs in the substation facilities was surveyed to present ways to broaden understanding of the magnetic field characteristics. We have investigated the level of the magnetic fields in the substation areas and control rooms of 25 substations in the metropolitan area in accordance with the measurement method of IEC CISPR(IEC/TC106 PT 62110). We propose objective and reliable policy approaches such as the electromagnetic field certification system to more accurately understand the property of magnetic field.
With an increase in the commercialization of electricity, and the development of advanced and large electric devices and various wireless radio wave services, concerns over the effects of electromagnetic fields on human health have increased. Accordingly, the World Health Organization encouraged the development of international standards by establishing the 'International Electromagnetic Fields Project' in 1996 based on studies on the harmful effects of electromagnetic fields on the human body. Moreover, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) classified electromagnetic fields as possible carcinogens under Group 2B category, even though they have been found to have a weak correlation with those effects on human health. Mid-to-large-sized electric facilities used at industrial sites mostly adopt a commercial frequency of 60 Hz, and workers handling these facilities are exposed to such extremely low frequency (ELF) fields for a long time. A previous study suggested that exposure to ELF electromagnetic fields with frequency ranges from 0 to 300 Hz, even for a short time, at densities higher than 100 μT may have harmful effects on human body as it affects the activation of nerve cells in the central nervous system by inducing an electric field and current and stimulating muscles and the nervous system in the body. Such studies, however, focused on home appliances used by ordinary people, and research on facilities utilizing high-capacity current and operated by workers at industrial sites is lacking. Therefore, in this study, a 3000 kilowatt generator, which is a high-capacity electric facility employed at industrial sites, was investigated, and the size of the magnetic fields generated during its no-load and high-load operations per distance to produce a map was measured to reveal spots deemed hazardous according to domestic and international exposure standards. The findings of this study is expected to alleviate workers' anxiety about the harmful effects of magnetic fields on their body and to minimize the level of exposure during operations.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the health status of residents who were exposed to sources of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) in the living environment and those who were not exposed to such a source of ELF-EMFs through a survey designed to appraise the residents' health levels. Method: Aimed at 251 residents exposed to a source of ELF-EMFs and 278 residents not exposed to a source, the survey was conducted to investigate the health status of the residents on the basis of questionnaire SF-36. Result: The health status scores of residents exposed to ELF-EMFs turned out to be lower than those of their counterparts. In terms of self-reported symptoms related to health and sleep quality, residents exposed to ELF-EMFs were found to have a higher complaint rate of self-reported symptoms such as dizziness, depression, and fatigue. Regarding sleep disorders, residents exposed to ELF-EMFs appeared to have a slightly higher complaint rate of sleep disorders compared to non-exposed residents. Conclusion: If a region is to be exposed to a source of ELF-EMFs, a more proactive policy for reducing such exposure is advised. In addition, it is necessary to better understand problems of residents by emplacing an ELF-EMFs risk information delivery system and building an efficient communication system for voluntary participation during the construction phase.

Objectives: Objective of this study is to review briefly exposure characteristics, monitoring instruments and threshold limit values for extremely low frequency-magnetic field (ELF-MF) methods. This study was undertaken through brief literature review. We performed a literature search in PubMed to identify ELF-MF studies conducted in workplaces. Initial search keywords such as 'extremely low frequency-magnetic field (ELF-MF)' and 'electromagnetic fields (EMF)' combined or singly. We limited our review to occupational rather than general nonworkplace environmental exposures. Methods: The contents we reviewed: key industry and occupations generating ELF-MF, several direct-reading instruments monitoring ELF-MF and threshold limit values (TLV) preventing health effects may be caused by the exposure to ELF-MF. Results: The industries related to the generation and supply of electricity, electrolytic installations, welding, and induction heating and more were regarded as high ELF-MF exposure industries. All jobs handling or employed performed in power cable lines, electrical wiring, and electrical equipment are found to be exposed to ELF-MF. Threshold or ceiling limit, 1,000 µT, is established to prevent acute effects of exposure to low-frequency EMFs on the nervous system: the direct stimulation of nerve and muscle tissues and the induction of retinal phosphenes. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified ELF-MF as possibly carcinogenic to humans chiefly based on epidemiological studies on childhood leukemia. However, a causal relationship between magnetic fields and several types of cancer including childhood leukemia has not been established nor has any other long-term effects. Risk management using precautionary measures, has been initiated by the US and EU to prevent chronic health effects related to ELF-MF exposure in workplaces. Conclusion: This study recommends the implementation of various measures such as theestablishment of occupational exposure limit values for ELF-MF and precautionary principle to prevent potential chronic occupational health effects may be caused by ELF-MF in Korea.
This paper presents a study on the characteristics and safety criteria for human body in ELF (Extremely Low Frequency : 50-60Hz) electric and magnetic fields. Many researches for ELF electric and magnetic fields, which are developed in the past, are studied and analyzed In this paper. In order to estabilish the safety criteria for human body in the field, the field intensity, induced current and voltage are calculated by the electrostatic field approach which is far simpler than the electromagnetic field one based on Maxwell equation. The method is applied to the 345 KV transmission line system In operation and 765 KV system under consideration. According to the results, the maximum value of field intensity, 6.8627KV/m, is evaluated at the location which is 14m away from transmission line. As the safety criteria value by the abroad researches asserting that the human can detect the Induced current in 6KV/m and above, 5KV/m and 7KV/m are recommended at residence area and nonresidence area, respectively.
This paper presents a study on the analysis and evaluation for ELF( Extremely Low Frequency) electric and magnetic fields under the transmission line according to the power system states. The power system states are classified into two types, normal state resulting from normal operation and alert state from outages. The current in a system is changed continually owing to the load fluctuations even in a normal operation. To calculate the current of the concerned line in a normal state, the system load level is devided into light, base and heavy load level. In case of contingency, an efficient algorithm based on matrix inversion lemma is developed to figure out the current changes. In order to analyze the variations of ELF field caused by the current fluctuations the electrostatic field approach which is far simpler than the electromagnetic field one based on Maxwell equation is introduced in this paper. The suggested method is applied to the IEEE 14 bus system to demonstrate the usefulness.
