Paulownia coreana is a medicinal, edible and industrial plant with the largest leaf, and is native to Korea. We evaluated the reducing power activities, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities (RSAs), nitrite scavenging activities (NSAs) and 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) cation RSAs by solvent extraction of P. coreana bark by using $50^{\circ}C$ hot water and $25^{\circ}C$ methanol. The antioxidative effect of P. coreana bark extract on corn seed oil was evaluated using the Rancimat test. The extraction yields on dry weight basis with 15 folds of hot water and methanol were 23.88% and 5.30%, respectively; further the flavonoid content in the hot water extract was over 2.5 times more than that in the methanol extract. The DPPH RSA of the methanol extract was substantially higher than that of the water extract, whereas the NSA of the water extract was higher than that of the methanol extract at pH 1.2. The ABTS RSAs of the two extracts were almost the same as that of ascorbic acid and 2,6-ditertiarybutyl hydroxytoluene. The two extracts of P. coreana bark in this study were found to slightly improve the oxidation stability of corn seed oil.
A novel sample pretreatment technique, headspace hanging drop liquid phase microextraction (HS-LPME) was studied and applied to the determination of flavors from solid clove buds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Several parameters affecting on HS-LPME such as organic solvent drop volume, extraction time, extraction temperature and phase ratio were investigated. 1-Octanol was selected as the extracting solvent, drop size was fixed to 0.6 $\mu$L. 60 min extraction time at 25 ${^{\circ}C}$ was chosen. HS-LPME has the good efficiency demonstrated by the higher partition equilibrium constant ($K_{lh}$) values and concentration factor (CF) values. The limits of detection (LOD) were 1.5-3.2 ng. The amounts of eugenol, $\beta$-caryophyllene and eugenol acetate from the clove bud sample were 1.90 mg/g, 1.47 mg/g and 7.0 mg/g, respectively. This hanging drop based method is a simple, fast and easy sample enrichment technique using minimal solvent. HSLPME is an alternative sample preparation method for the analysis of volatile aroma compounds by GC-MS.
Solvent extraction using a Schiff-base, salen$(NEt_2)_2$, as a chelating agent has been conducted on several water samples to study the determination of trace Cu(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II). Experimental conditions for the formation and extraction of metal complexes were optimized with an aqueous solution similar in composition to the samples. The matrix difference between the sample and standard solutions was approximately matched, and the pH of each sample solution was adjusted to 9.5 with $NaHCO_3/NaOH$ buffer. The concentration of salen$(NEt_2)_2$ was $7.3\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$ mol/L, and the complexes were extracted into MIBK solvent followed by the measurement of AAS absorbance. The potential interference of concomitant ions was investigated, but no interference from alkaline and alkali earth ions was shown in this procedure. The given procedure is precise, as judged from the relative standard deviation of less than 5% for five measured data. The recovery of 93-103% shows that this method is quantitative for such trace metal analysis.
The key process used in nuclear industries for the management of radiotoxicity associated with spent fuel in a closed fuel cycle is solvent extraction. An understanding of hydrodynamics and mass transfer is of primary importance for the design of mass transfer equipment used in solvent extraction processes. Understanding the interfacial phenomenon and the associated hydrodynamics of the liquid drops is essential for model-based design of mass transfer devices. In this work, the phenomenon of drop formation at the tip of a nozzle submerged in quiescent immiscible liquid phase is revisited. Previously reported force balance based models and empirical correlations are analyzed. Experiments are carried out to capture the process of drop formation using high-speed imaging technique. The images are digitally processed to measure the average drop diameter. A correlation based on the force balance model is proposed to estimate drop diameter and jet length. The average drop diameter obtained from the proposed model is in good agreement with experimental data with an average error of 6.3%. The developed model is applicable in both the necking as well as jetting regime and is validated for liquid-liquid systems having low, moderate and high interfacial tension.
The physiochemical properties of Rhododendron mucronulatum pollens were examined after the use of various extraction conditions. The levels of phenolic compounds and electron donating abilities (DPPH) were better after 80% (v/v) ethanol extraction than after water extraction. The content of phenolic compounds and the DPPH were high when the solvent ratio was 20X. The content of phenolic compounds was highest at $45^{\circ}C$ (347.60 mg/100 g). The DPPH was highest, at 67.93%, when extraction was performed at $25^{\circ}C$. An extraction time of 6 hr yielded the highest content of phenolic compounds (312.63 mg/100 g). The DPPH did not vary with extraction time. Both the levels of phenolic compounds and DPPH values rose when extractions were performed twice. In summary, a solvent ratio of 20X, an extraction temperature of $25-45^{\circ}C$, double extraction and an extraction time of 6 hare optimal for extraction, with maximal DPPH and phenolic content, of Jindalrae pollens.
In this study, two supercritical extraction systems of different scale, analytical-scale and lab-scale, were employed to investigate the extraction efficiency of canola oil from canola seeds using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCCO_2$) as an extraction solvent. The effects of various parameters such as extraction temperature ($40{\sim}80^{\circ}C$), pressure (200~500 bar), particle size, and $SCCO_2$ flow direction on the extraction rate and yield were examined in detail. Triglycerides and fatty acids in the extracted canola oil were analyzed quantitatively by high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. The solubility values of canola oil in $SCCO_2$ could be calculated from the experimental results. Similar extraction yields were obtained from both analytical-scale and lab-scale extraction systems. The extraction rates obtained under solvent ($SCCO_2$ ) upflow conditions were found to be higher than those of solvent downflow extraction. However, the effect of $SCCO_2$ flow direction on the extraction yield was observed to be relatively insignificant.

Ginsenosides in ginseng berry has been known as functional materials showing physiological effect to the human. Specially, ginseng berry contains plenty of ginsenoside Re, but the study of extraction processes were not enough performed. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to establish the optimized extraction process for obtaining ginsenoside Re from ginseng berry. The extraction process of ginsenosides was performed in 250 mL extraction flask containing 150 solvent and 10 g of dried ginseng berry. The extracted ginsenoside Re, Rg1 and Rd and total crude ginsenosides from ginseng berry were evaluated by TLC according to the treated conditions (the ratio of alcohol to water, extraction temperature, extraction period, and extraction times). Optimized conditions for extraction was 70% to 30% of the ratio of alcohol to water, $80^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature, 4 h of extraction period, and 2 times of extraction frequency. The amount of total crude ginsenosides of the extract obtained from the optimized process was 88.6 mg/g based on dried ginseng berry. The composition of ginsenosides from the extracted was 5.5% of Rb1, 5.2% of Rc, 14.3% of Rd, 51.5% of Re, 8.1% of Rf, and 15.7% of Rg1. A protopanaxtriol ginsenosides of whole ginsenosides extracted was about 80%.
Solvent extraction experiments have been performed to separate Nd and Pr from chloride leaching solution of monazite sand using PC88A and D2EHPA. For this purpose, the effect of the saponification of PC88A and D2EHPA on the extraction and separation of the two metals were studied by varying the pH of aqueous solution. In the experimental ranges conducted in this study, the distribution coefficients of Nd were higher than those of Pr and separation factor value increased with the increase of solution pH. Saponification of PC88A enhanced the distribution coefficients of Nd and Pr as well as the separation factor. Saponification of D2EHPA had some effect on the extraction of the two metals but little effect on the separation factor.
Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) is known as a more environmental-friendly process with economic advantages in terms of less time, less solvent, less energy and less waste than the current reflux method that is time-consuming. MAE was applied to extract three pesticides (quintozene, tolclofos-methyl and procymidone) from ginseng in a pesticide residue analysis and eliminate pesticide contaminants from ginseng prior to production of the ginseng extracts. The optimal conditions for pesticide extraction from ginseng were 50% in power (150 watts), 2 minutes, 20 mL hexane and 2.0 g sample. The results of optimal conditions were compared with those of Soxhlet method (7 hours, 150 mL hexane). The recoveries between two methods were almost same while time and amount of solvent used in MAE were significantly decreased in comparing with those in the Soxhlet methods. When the 45% ethyl alcohol as a extraction solvent was applied to eliminate pesticides from ginseng prior to the production of the ginseng extracts, it was found that 100% quintozene, 69% tolclofos-methyl and 83% procymidone were eliminated from ginseng. The data showed that MAE may be used to eliminate pesticide contaminants in ginseng prior to making the ginseng extracts.
For the purpose of development of the extraction process of lithium ion from concentrated water eliminated from desalination process, an experimental research on the solvent extraction of lithium ion from aqueous solutions was performed. The effects of operating parameters, such as concentration of extractant, ratio of extracting solution/aqueous solution, pH of aqueous solution, were examined. The effect of sodium chloride, the major component of sea water, was also examined. Lithium ion in aqueous solutions of pH=10.2~10.6 adjusted by ammonia solution was most effectively extracted by extracting solution composed of 0.02 M TTA and 0.04 M TOPO in kerosine. The addition of sodium chloride in lithium aqueous solution significantly interfered the extraction of lithium ion.
