This study was performed to examine the effect of $\gamma$-irradiation on the volatile organic compounds in Houttuynia cordata Thunb.(H. cordata). 1be volatile compounds of non-irradiated and 10 kGy $\gamma$-irradiated H. cordata were isolated using SDE apparatus and analyzed by GC/MS. For each treatment the number of volatile compounds were detected at 83 and 85, respectively, 1be predominant functional groups of volatile organic compounds from H. cordata were identified as alcohols and ketones. H. cordata was mainly composed of hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (12.81 %), phytol, decanoic acid, dodecanoic acid, octadecanol, caryophyllene oxide, 2-undecanone and menthol. Houttuynum which is characteristic compound of H. cordata was found in all samples and there was no significant difference with irradiation doses. Consequently, $\gamma$-irradiation of H. cordata would be an effective process for sanitation and to increase extraction efficiency.
This study was conducted to assess the removal of residual pesticides and to obtain high amounts of quercetin in onion peel extracts (OPEs) by 4 washing treatments. Washing is one of the standard processing steps in obtaining functional food ingredients from onion peel. After a first detergent wash (0.2% w/v) (DW) and hot air drying ($80^{\circ}C$, 24 hr) (B), 4 washing treatments were tested, including a second DW (C), ultrasonication ($50^{\circ}C$, 10 min) plus DW (D), 0.3% $H_2O_2$ (v/v) plus DW (E), and blanching ($95-97^{\circ}C$, 2 min) plus DW (F). This was followed by 60% (v/v) ethanol extraction and vacuum freeze drying of the OPE. The E treatment yielded 89.04% OPE and a quercetin content of 96.84% in the OPE compared with the B treatment, and had the highest efficiency of all treatments tested. The OPE was tested for the presence of 177 residual pesticides and three compounds were detected in all treatments: cyhalothirn, fluquinconazole and procymidone. Cyhalothirn and fluquinconazole levels were below the permitted levels for fresh onion, while procymidone was present in the high level range of 128.01~133.46 mg/kg in all samples. The E treatment was a better washing method than the others for removal of residual pesticides. It could reduce the level of residual pesticides without changing the functional properties of the OPE.
There are several remediation technologies for heavy metal contaminated soils but increasing cost limits the application of the technology if the contaminated area is large. Therefore, stabilization, which blocks the release of heavy metals or makes slow the release, is one of the applicable technology for the heavy metal contaminated soil. Current study is an applicability test for a smelter area with various stabilizer such as magnetite, hematite, zeolite-A, zeolite-X, zeolite-Y, zinc oxide, calcium oxide, carbon trioxide, manganese oxide, manganese dioxide, fish bone, sodium phosphate. The soil contaminated with arsenic, lead, copper, nickel, and zinc could not be stabilized only one stabilizer which is known to have stability for certain metal. Many of the stabilizer works for a few metal but not all of the heavy metal. In several cases, stabilizers increase the release of the other metals while they stabilize some metals. In general, the stabilizing efficiency was increased with time. For Ni, Pb, calcium oxide, carbon trioxide, manganese oxide had good stabilizing effect in water extractable portion. For Cu, manganese oxide, zeolite showed good results especially in the exchangeable portion of the sequential extraction. For As, magnetite had good ability but most of the metal oxide which showed good result for other heavy metals increased with the release of As. Current study suggest that multiple stabilizers are needed for the contaminated soil and dose of the stabilizer and stabilizing time should be carefully considered for the soil contaminated with various metals.
In this paper, we proposed the qualify metric based on SVC and the subjective quality. The proposed quality metric is for a general purpose. It means we can use it for any video sequences regardless of its temporal and spatial characteristics. The Quality of Service(QoS) is one of the important issues in heterogeneous environment which has diverse restrictions such as limited network bandwidth and limited display resolution. Scalable Video Coding(SVC) is the efficient video coding skill in heterogeneous environment. Because SVC can be adapted to various quality bitstreams using three scalabilities(spatial, temporal, and SNR) from one bitstream which has full scalability. To maximize the QoS in this environment, we should consider the subjective quality which is the viewer response. And also we should consider temporal and spatial characteristics of video sequence because the subjective quality is affected by temporal and spatial characteristics of video sequence. To verify the efficiency of the proposed method, we perform subjective assessments. The experimental results show that the proposed method has high correlation with subjective quality. The proposed method can be a decision tool of SVC birstream extraction.
The result of Image segmentation, an indispensable process in image processing, significantly affects the analysis of an image. Despite the significance of image segmentation, it produces some problems when the variation of pixel values is large, or the boundary between background and an object is not clear. Also, these problems occur frequently when many objects in an image are placed very close by. In this paper, when the shape of objects in an image is circular, we proposed an algorithm which segment an each object in an image using the geometric characteristic of circular shape. The proposed algorithm is composed of 4 steps. First is the boundary edge extraction of whole object. Second step is to find the candidate points for further segmentation using the boundary edge in the first step. Calculating the representative circles using the candidate points is the third step. Final step is to draw the line connecting the overlapped points produced by the several erosions and dilations of the representative circles. To verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, the algorithm is compared with the three well-known cell segmentation algorithms. Comparison is conducted by the number of segmented region and the correctness of the inner segment line. As the result, the proposed algorithm is better than the well-known algorithms in both the number of segmented region and the correctness of the inner segment line by 16.7% and 21.8%, respectively.
Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are the state-of-the-art technology among electrochemical energy storage and conversion cells, and are still considered the most attractive class of battery in the future due to their high specific energy density, high efficiency, and long cycle life. Rapid development of power-hungry commercial electronics and large-scale energy storage applications (e.g. off-peak electrical energy storage), however, requires novel anode materials that have higher energy densities to replace conventional graphite electrodes. Germanium (Ge) and silicon (Si) are thought to be ideal prospect candidates for next generation LIB anodes due to their extremely high theoretical energy capacities. For instance, Ge offers relatively lower volume change during cycling, better Li insertion/extraction kinetics, and higher electronic conductivity than Si. In this focused review, we briefly describe the basic concepts of LIBs and then look at the characteristics of ideal anode materials that can provide greatly improved electrochemical performance, including high capacity, better cycling behavior, and rate capability. We then discuss how, in the future, Ge anode materials (Ge and Ge oxides, Ge-carbon composites, and other Ge-based composites) could increase the capacity of today's Li batteries. In recent years, considerable efforts have been made to fulfill the requirements of excellent anode materials, especially using these materials at the nanoscale. This article shall serve as a handy reference, as well as starting point, for future research related to high capacity LIB anodes, especially based on semiconductor Ge and Si.
Protein efficiency ratio (PER), net protein utilization (NPU), nitrogen digestibility (ND), organ weights, and amino acid composition were investigated for rapeseed protein isolates (RPI) prepared by alkaline countercurrent extraction and isoelectric precipitation of defatted rapeseed meal (DRM). The PER values for 3 kinds of RPI obtained at pI of 6.7, 5.6 and 5.0 were 2.8, 3.1 and 2.9, and for DRM 2.5 while the NPU values for these RPI appeared to be 68, 73 and 71 %, and for DRM 56 %, respectively. Mean ND (85%), food intake (87), and weight gain (37.6) for RPI were significantly different from those of DRM (71 %, 77, and 28, respectively). There was no signicant difference in the PER among three RPI and casein (3.0), nor in the NPU among those proteins and casein (74%). These data attributed to the favorable amino acid patterns of proteins isolated which contained balanced essential amino acids in proportions which meet the requirements of human adult(FAO/WHO, 1973).

HPLC quantifications of fresh and cooked (steamed/microwaved) spinach, one of the most frequently consumed vegetables in foodservice operations, were carried out to determine carotenoids compositions. An S-3 $\mu$m C30 stationary phase for reversed-phase columns with diode-array detection was used to separate and quantify geometric isomers of provitamin A carotenoids in the fresh and cooked spinach. The carotenoids in fresh spinach were identified and quantified: Lutein (63.0%), $\beta$-carotene isomers (all-trans 29.6%, 9-cis 3.2%, 13-cis 1.8%, $\alpha$-carotene 0.4%, zeaxanthin 2.1%) and cryptoxanthin. Cryptoxanthin, detected in a trace amount in HPLC, was not quantified in this study. Lutein was little affected by cooking methods and frozen conditions. 9-cis and 13-cis-$\beta$-carotene isomers were major types formed during cooking. Cooking (steam/microwave) did not alter carotenoid profiles of the samples, but the amounts of carotenoids quantified were greater than those in the fresh samples. Heat treatment such as steaming increased total carotenoids contents, especially trans-$\beta$-carotene (p<0.05). The carotenoid contents of the frozen spinach increased even after the microwaved treatment (p<0.05). These increases were likely to result from the increased extraction efficiency and inactivation of enzymes capable of carotenoids degrading during the heat treatments.
Struvite (MgNH4PO4 ⋅ 6H2O) and hydroxyapatite (HAP, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) precipitation in urine-separating toilets (NoMix toilets) causes severe maintenance problems and also reduce the phosphate and calcium content. Application of urine separating technique and extraction of by-products from human urine is a cost effective technique in waste water treatment. In this study, we extract urine calcite from human urine by batch scale method, using urease producing microbes to trigger the precipitation and calcite formation process. Extracted urine calcite (calcining at 800℃) is a potential adsorbent for removal of heavy metal(loid)s like (Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ and As3+) along with additional leaching analysis of total nitrogen (T-N), phosphate (T-P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The transformations of calcite during synthesis were confirm by characterization using XRD, SEM-EDAX and FT-IR techniques. In additional, the phosphate leaching potential and adsorbate (nitrate) efficiency in aqueous solution was investigated using the calcinedurine calcite. The results indicate that the calcite was effectively remove heavy metal(loid)s lead up to 96.8%. In addition, the adsorption capacity (qe) of calcite was calculated and it was found to be 203.64 Pb, 110.96 Cd, 96.02 Zn, 104.2 As, 149.54 Cu and 162.68 Ni mg/g, respectively. Hence, we suggest that the calcite obtain from the human urine will be a suitable absorbent for heavy metal(loid)s removal from aqueous solution.

At the current situation of continuous utilization of heavy metal contaminated upland for agricultural purpose in Korea, minimizing transport of heavy metals from soil to crops is important for securing safety of human health. The present study (in field scale) examined the efficiency of several soil amendments (dolomite, steel slag, lime, zeolite, and compost) on reduction of phytoavailable heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in soil through comparison with no amendment treatment and clean soil cover treatment. For determination of the phytoavailability, 1 M $NH_4NO_3$ extraction and red pepper cultivation were introduced. Among the amendments, in general, dolomite and steel slag were the most effective in reduction of metal (Cd, Pb, and Zn) phytoavailability resulting in less accumulation of these metals in shoot and fruit of red pepper. However, dolomite and steel slag treatment was not as effective as clean soil cover treatment which showed the least metal accumulation in red pepper fruit. Nevertheless, with taking into account the cost, treatment of dolomite or steel slag can be competitive method because the current study showed that dolomite or steel slag treatment reduced accumulated heavy metal concentration effectively in both shoot and fruit of red pepper compared to those from control soil and the concentration in fruit was within the standard value (<0.2 mg $kg^{-1}$ for both Cd and Pb).
