10Gb/s CMOS Transimpedance Amplifier Designs for Optical Communications (광통신용 10Gb/s CMOS 전치증폭기 설계)

  • In this paper, a couple of 10Gb/s transimpedance amplifiers are realized in a 0.18um standard CMOS technology for optical communication applications. First, the voltage-mode inverter TIA(I-TIA) exploits inverter input configuration to achieve larger effective gm, thus reducing the input impedance and increasing the bandwidth. I-TIA demonstrates $56dB{\Omega}$ transimpedance gain, 14GHz bandwidth for 0.25pF photodiode capacitance, and -16.5dBm optical sensitivity for 0.5A/W responsivity, 9dB extinction ration and $10^{-12}$ BER. However, both its inherent parasitic capacitance and the package parasitics deteriorate the bandwidth significantly, thus mandating very judicious circuit design. Meanwhile, the current-mode RGC TIA incorporates the regulated cascade input configuration, and thus isolates the large input parasitic capacitance from the bandwidth determination more effectively than the voltage-mode TIA. Also, the parasitic components give much less impact on its bandwidth. RGC TIA provides $60dB{\Omega}$ transimpedance gain, 10GHz bandwidth for 0.25pF photodiode capacitance, and -15.7dBm optical sensitivity for 0.5A/W responsivity, 9dB extinction ration and $10^{-12}$ BER. Main drawback is the power dissipation which is 4.5 times larger than the I-TIA.

Partial Discharge Diagnosis of Thermal Degradated PVC Cable (열열화된 PVC 케이블의 부분방전 진단)

  • In this thesis, the partial discharge according to applied voltage and variations of cross-sectional area and length of the conductor related to general condition for using cable was measured in order to study degradation diagnosis for 2-Core cable of the PVC insulator used in industrial fields for other safety installations. Also the thermal degradation conditions under various installation circumstances of cables were studied by assuming degradation conditions with each different degradation rate (50%, 67%, 100%) such as variation in degradated temperature, thermal exposure time, normal state, partially degradated state and overall degradated state for thermal degradation diagnosis. The quantity of electric discharge (V-Q) according to applied voltage was measured for measurement of inception voltage and extinction voltage. The quantity of electric discharge and the number of electric discharge (Q-N) were measured with applied voltage kept constantly. In addition, pictures were taken using SEM (scanning electron microscope) to compare the surface of external insulator to degradated state of internal insulator according to thermal degradation temperature and also compare the surface of external insulator to degradated surface state of internal insulator according exposure time of cables to thermal stress.

  • The proton conserving effect of diffusion with self-aligned SiO2-cladding is investigated by infrared transmission spectra. Based on the proton conserving effect, proton-diffused channel waveguides with self-aligned SiO2-cladding substrates. And an electro-optic cutoff modulator with self aligned electrode that utilizes a single-mode proton-diffused channel waveguide in a Y-cut XX-propagating LiNbO3 substrate is fabricated. Over 20 dB extinction has been achieved with applied voltage of 15V.

  • This paper discusses several electrical properties of tape-type insulation impregnated with liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) in superconducting cable. Synthetic polypropylene laminated paper has been tested for its short-term breakdown strength and partial discharge(PD) characteristics under AC voltage. furthermore, the effect of winding parameter on breakdown strength, PD incepti on and extinction electrical stress with different test samples are discussed.

  • In this study, We developed the microprocessor based controller for Auto Section Switch(ASS). This is installed at consumer's medium-high voltage(load capacity is below 4,000 kVA) switchgear. This function is cooperate with protection device of fault section and automatically dividing the section. And It is designed by Air putter type extinction structure and adopt the mechanism and breaking part module of existing Load Breaker Switch. In addition, We successfully conducted the operation test and checked main function of proto-type.

  • This paper presents a new adaptive single-phase auto reclosure (SPAR) algorithm to discriminate between a permanent fault and a transient fault and to minimize a protection dead time. The algorithm precisely detects the extinction of the secondary arc, based on THD's profiles on the faulted phase voltage waveform. The EMTP/ATPDraw program was used to simulate the single phase grounding fault for evaluating the proposed algorithm. And the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is performing well.

  • This paper presents a new numerical algorithm suitable for defining recloser reclaims time and blocking automatic reclosing during permanent faults on overhead lines. It is based on terminal voltage input data processing. The decision if it is safe or not to reclose is determined from the voltage signal of faulted and tripped line phase using Total Harmonic Distortion factor calculated by Discrete Fourier Transform. The algorithm was successfully tested using signals recorded on the real power system. The tests demonstrate the ability of presented algorithm to determine the secondary arc extinction time and to block unsuccessful automatic reclosing of HV lines with permanent fault.

  • VCB, with its big arc extinction in very short switching time, produces the high switching surge voltage which may cause the breakdown of motor insulation or acceleration of insulation deterionation. To protect motor winding insulation, we developed the computer algorithm for simulating the surge occurred in VCB by EMTP. And we established the effect of the C-R surge absorber by the surge measurement in the motor-VCB circuit.

Experimental Study on Downwardly Spreading Flame over Inclined Polyethylene-insulated Electrical Wire with Applied AC Electric Fields (교류전기장이 인가된 폴리에틸렌으로 피복된 기울어진 전선을 통해 하향으로 전파하는 화염에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental study on downwardly spreading flame over slanted electrical wire, which is insulated by Polyethylene (PE), was conducted with applied AC electric fields. The result showed that the flame spread rate decreased initially with increase in inclination angle of wire and then became nearly constant. The flame shape was modified significantly with applied AC electric field due to the effect of ionic wind. Such a variation in flame spread rate could be explained by a thermal balance mechanism, depending on flame shape and slanted direction of flame. Extinction of the spreading flame was not related to angle of inclination, and was described well by a functional dependency upon the frequency and voltage at extinction.

The Arcing Faults Simulation and Adaptive Autoreclosure Strategy for 765 kV Transmission Line Protection (765 kV 송전선로 보호를 위한 아크사고 시뮬레이션 및 적응적 자동재폐로 대책)

  • In many countries including Korea, in order to transmit the more electric power, the higher transmission line voltage is inevitable. So, a rapid reclosing scheme is important for EHV/UHV transmission lines to ensure requirements for high reliability of main lines. A critical aspect of reclosing operation is the extinction of the secondary arc since it must extinguish before successful reclosure can occur. Therefore the accurate simulation techniques of arcing faults are of importance. And successful reclosing switching can be accomplished by adopting a proper method such as HSGS and hybrid scheme to reduce the secondary arc extinction time. First of all, this paper discusses a suggested arc model, which have time dependent resistance for primary arc and piecewise linear approximated arc model for secondary arc. And this simulation technique is applied to Korean 765 kV transmission lines. Also hybrid scheme is simulated and evaluated for the purpose of shortening dead time. For adaptive reclosing scheme, variable dead time control algorithm is suggested. Two kinds of algorithm are tested. One is max tracking algorithm and the other is rms tracking algorithm. According to simulation results, rms tracking has less errors than max tracking. Therefore rms tracking is applied to Korean 765 kV transmission lines with hybrid scheme.
