  • This paper presents the results of a study on flexural capacity of large size RC slabs strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) plates. A total of 5 specimens of 6.0m length were tested in four point bending after strengthening them with externally bonded CFRP plates. The CFRP plates were bonded without prestress and with two prestress levels, 0.4% and 0.6% of CFRP plate strain. Test variables included the type of strengthening, prestressing level, and the effects according to each test variables are analysed. The experimental results show that proposed methods can increase significantly the flexural capacity such as strength, stiffness of the beam and the increase ranged between 36.2% and 63.2% of the load-carrying capacity of the control beams. The non-prestressed specimen failed by separation of the plate from the beam due to premature debonding while most of the prestressed specimens failed by CFRP plate fracture. And the cracking loads and maximum loads were increased proportionally to the prestress level.

  • This paper introduces an experimental verification and a field application of the proposed technique using the combination of FEM and HGA about the loss prestressing force of an exteranl tendon by above same authors. The vibration tests have been conducted by using a laboratory models and the externally prestressed tendon at the field and the natural frequencies are extracted from the vibration tests. The proposed technique based on the extracted natural frequencies is applied. It is seen that the errors in the tension and lost prestressing force by proposed technique are about 4% from a laboratory model test. For the model verification at field, exact modeling has beem made with Rayleigh damping. It is seen that the error in the tension by proposed technique is less than 1% and the estimated lost prestressing force converges less than the exact value.

  • Recently, the externally prestressed unbonded steel I-beam bridges have been increasingly built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed steel I-beams which are with external unbonded tendon is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in a point of that the slip of tendons at deviators and the change of tendon eccentricity occurs, when external loads are applied in external unbonded steel I-beams. The concept of prestressing steel structures has not been widely considered, in spite of long and successful history of prestressing concrete members. In this study, The field experiment on prestressed steel I-beams has been performed in the various aspects of prestressed I-beam including the tend on type and profile.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyse and compare experimentally flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with CFRP plates by different methods, which are divided into three classes: externally-bonded without end anchorage, externally-bonded with end anchorages, and anchored after prestressing of CFRP plates. Test results show that the RC beams strengthened with end anchorages have the improvement of ductility and flexural performance evaluation including ultimate strength and deflection, compared with only external bonding. Especially, RC beams with prestressed and anchored CFRP plates increase ultimate strength and ductility significantly.

  • Recent application researches on external pre-stressing method of composite structures have been conducted to explore its advantages. An external pre-stress could improve mechanical behavior and maintenance, and is economically efficient. In this paper, the Incremental Deformation Method (IDM) was proposed to analyze the elasto-plastic flexural behavior of externally pre-stressed composite bridge with consideration for the material's nonlinearity. This method was verified with experimental results.

  • Experimental study has been performed in order to investigate the behavior of RC beams strengthened with externally bonded post-tensioned CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) strips. Specimens consist of 9 small-scaled specimens with the different post-tensioning level as a main test parameter. A control specimen and specimens with simply bonded CFRP strips have been manufactured to compare the structural performances of prestressed system. From the test results, it was observed that the specimens strengthened with simply bonded CFRP strips showed debonding failure below 50% of CFRP tensile strength due to premature debonding. On the other hand, all the specimens strengthened with post- tensioned CFRP strips reached the rupture strength of the CFRP strip. The cracking and yielding loads were also increased proportionally to the post-tensioning level, but the ultimate loads were nearly equal regardless of the post-tensioning level.

  • The flexural-stiffness formula of the wale for the innovative prestressed support (IPS) system was precisely derived, and the equivalent beam stiffness was introduced for application in the actual design of the IPS wale. The cable tension forces of the IPS wale were calculated in both cases, and the axial-deformation effects were included and ignored, respectively. The central displacements of the 1-post, 2-post, 3-post, and 4-post IPS wales were calculated based on the principle of virtual work. The effects of the IPS wale length and cable inclination angle were also investigated using the derived central displacements. The simplified equivalent flexural stiffness of the IPS wale is presented herein for design purposes, and the validity of the proposed design formula was verified through its comparison with the FE and analysis solutions.

  • This paper introduces a remained tensile force estimation method using SI technique based on evolutionary algorithm for externally prestressed tendon. This paper applies the differential evolutionary scheme to SI technique. A virtual model test using ABAQUS 3 dimensional frame model has been made for this work The virtual model is added to the tensile force(28.5kN). Two set of frequencies are extracted respectively from the virtual test and the self-coding FEM 2 dimension model. The estimating tendon tension for the FEM model is 28.31kN. It is that the error in the tendon tension is 1% through the differential evolutionary algorithm. The errors between virtual model and the self-coding FEM model are assumed as the model error.

  • Based on the energy method considering the second order effects, the natural frequencies of externally prestressed simply supported beam and the compression softening effect of external prestress force were analyzed. It is concluded that the compression softening effect depends on the loss of external tendon eccentricity. As the number of deviators increases from zero to a large number, the compression softening effect of external prestress force decreases from the effect of axial compression to almost zero, which is consistent with the conclusion mathematically rigorously proven. The frequencies calculated by the energy method conform well to the frequencies by FEM which can simulate the frictionless slide between the external tendon and deviator, the accuracy of the energy method is validated. The calculation results show that the compression softening effect of external prestress force is negligible for the beam with 2 or more deviators due to slight loss of external tendon eccentricity. As the eccentricity and area of tendon increase, the first natural frequency of the simply supported beams noticeably increases, however the effect of the external tendon on other frequencies is negligible.
