Evaluation of stability in traditional designing of reinforced soil structures is executed by examination of internal and external stability. Analysis of internal stability is for pull-out and ductile strength. Analysis of external stability is for settlement, overturning and sliding. To minimize inherent uncertainties of soil properties and analytical model, reliability analysis was developed recently. In this study, reliability analysis method considering simultaneous failure probability for various failure mode of internal and external stability is proposed. By applying uni-modal bounds, Stability of system reliability of reinforced soil structures is evaluated by integrating multi failure mode for various analytical model. Because of complex consideration for various failure shapes and modes, it is possible to secure advanced safety by using simultaneous failure probability. And evaluation of reinforced soil structure is executed by representative index, simultaneous failure probability, than previous method.
This study compared the stability of the cervical spine according to the presence of neck pain and deep neck flexor performance. Thirty subjects with neck pain, and thirty subjects without neck pain were recruited for this study. The Cranio-cervical flexion (CCF) test was applied using a pressure biofeedback unit to classify the subjects into four subgroups; no cervical pain and good deep neck flexor performance (NG group), no cervical pain and poor deep neck flexor performance (NP group), cervical pain and good deep neck flexor performance (PG group), and cervical pain and poor deep neck flexor performance (PP group). The head sway angle was measured using a three-dimensional motion analysis system. A 3-kg weight was used for external perturbation with the subject sitting in a chair in the resting and erect head positions with voluntary contraction of the deep neck flexors. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed with a Bonferroni post hoc test. The deep neck flexor performance differed significantly among the four groups (p<.05). The NG group had significantly greater deep neck flexor performance than NP and PP groups. The stability of the cervical spine also differed significantly among the four groups in the resting head position (p<.05). The head sway angle was significantly smaller in NG group as compared with the other groups. The PP group had the greatest head sway angle in the resting head position. However, there was no significant difference in the stability of the cervical spine among the groups in the erect head position with voluntary contraction of deep neck flexors (p=.57). The results of this study suggest that the deep neck flexor performance is important for maintaining the stability of cervical spine from external perturbation.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in postural stability according to ankle fixation in healthy university students. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Thirty healthy subjects (15 males and 15 females, 20.13 years, 167.49 cm, 65.87 kg) were recruited on a voluntary basis. The BT4 system (HUR Laps Oy, Tampere, Finland) was used to measure the static (standing posture with eyes open and eyes closed) and dynamic (external perturbation and limits of stability (LOS) in the forward, backward, left, and right side) balance abilities. External perturbation was measured by the subject's postural sway velocity and area for 20 seconds after being impacted by a gym ball. Static and dynamic stabilities were measured with ankle joint fixation and non-fixation conditions. Ankle fixation was provided using Mueller tape on both ankle joints. Results: For static stability under the standing posture, there was no significant difference between standing with ankle joint fixation and non-fixation conditions. However, dynamic stability (external perturbation and LOS in the forward, backward, left, and right side) was significantly higher in the standing with the non-fixation condition compared to the standing with ankle joint fixation condition (p<0.05). Conclusions: Our results reveal that ankle joint fixation can influence dynamic stability during standing. Thus, we believe that this result provides basic information for making improvements in postural control and may be useful in balance training for fall prevention.
Underwater architecture in providing a comfortable living space underwater is mandated to survive prevailing environmental loads, especially hydrostatic ambient water pressure exerted on the structure of individual habitat hulls at depth and hydrodynamic fluctuation of external forces that perturb the postural equilibrium and mooring stability of the underwater housing system, for which the design including the hull shape and mooring system constraint the responses. In this study, the postural stability of a proposed underwater floating housing system with three vertically connected ellipsoidal-shape habitat hulls of different sizes are theorized and calculated for hydrostatic stability, using MATLAB in the volumetric integration of a hull and the weight of operational loads under assumed scenarios. The assumptions made in the numerical method to estimate the stability of the habitat system include the fixed weight of the hulls, and their adjustable loads within operational limits for the set meteorological oceanic conditions. The purpose of this study was to numerically manipulate a) The buoyancy and b) The adjusted center of mass of the system within the range of designed external and internal load changes, by which the effective mooring system capability and postural equilibrium requirements were argued with the quantitative analysis.
Effect of different alkane based solvents on the stability of emulsion liquid membrane was investigated using normal alkanes (n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane and n-decane) under various operating parameters of surfactant concentration, emulsification time, internal phase concentration, volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase, volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase and stirring speed. Results of stability revealed that emulsion liquid membrane containing n-octane as solvent and span-80 (5 % (w/w)) as emulsifying agent presented the highest amount of emulsion stability (the lowest breakage) compared with other solvents; however, operating parameters (surfactant concentration (5% (w/w)), emulsification time (6 min), internal phase concentration (0.05 M), volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase (1/1), volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase (1/5) and stirring speed (300 rpm)) were also influential on improving the stability (about 0.2% breakage) and on achieving the most stable emulsion. The membrane with the highest stability was employed to extract acridine orange with various concentrations (10, 20 and 40 ppm) from water. The emulsion liquid membrane prepared with n-octane as the best solvent almost removed 99.5% of acridine orange from water. Also, the prepared liquid membrane eliminated completely (100%) other cationic dyes (methylene blue, methyl violet and crystal violet) from water demonstrating the efficacy of prepared emulsion liquid membrane in treatment of dye polluted waters.
The desired ZMP is different from the actual ZMP of a humanoid robot during actual walking and stand upright. A humanoid robot must maintain its stable posture although external force is given to the robot. A humanoid robot can know its stability with ZMP. Actual ZMP may be moved out of the foot-print polygons by external disturbance or uneven ground surfaces. If the position of ZMP moves out of stable region, the stability can not be guaranteed. Therefore, The control of the ZMP is necessary. In this paper, ZMP control algorithm is proposed. Herein, the ZMP control uses difference between desired ZMP and actual ZMP. The proposed algorithm gives reaction moment with ankle joint when external force is supplied. 3D simulator shows motion of a humanoid robot and calculated data.

This paper presents measured deformation of geomembrane installed on slopes of a landfill. The layout of geosynthetics installed on landfill slopes as required by regulations is composed of, in typical, geocomposite, geomembrane, geosynthetic clay liner in turn from the slope. An effort was made to better understand the sources of external forces acting on geosynthetics and their interactions. The results of a field observation indicated that tensile stresses induced on geomebrane were far less in magnitude than predicted by the design method employing mass equilibrium of waste. This was mainly because external forces acting on slopes were not transferred from geocomposite to underlying geomembrane. A simple, but rather rational method for assessing the stability of geosynthetics against tensile stresses was proposed. This method is based on a hypothesis that external forces acting on geosynthetics are the results of downdrag of waste during waste compaction.
We present a general uniqueness result of an endemic state for an S-I-R model with external force of infection. We reduce the problem of finding non-trivial steady state solutions to that of finding zeros of a real function of one variable so that we can easily prove the uniqueness of an endemic state. We introduce an assumption which was usually used to show stability of a non-trivial steady state. It turns out that such an assumption adopted from a stability analysis is crucial for proving the uniqueness as well, and the assumption holds for almost all cases in our model.
To analyze the effects of ground water levels and external loads on the stability of a Dia- phragm wall, the three models of Bell, Piaskowski/kowalewski, and Washbourne were modified and extended to develop a new program SL3D. Comparing to the other two models, Washbourne's model shows the stability in on safes at the beginning of the excavation and increase as the excavation continue . Also the effects of various design factors, such as the density of slurry, ground water levels, the friction angle of soil, external loads and the length of trench, have been analyzed and a nomogram was developed.

This paper intends to provide the whirling characteristics of an asymmetric rotor-shaft system with a non-ideal DC motor. The equations of motion have been derived in terms of system parameters such as the internal/external damping, the asymmetry and the motor voltage. By imposing the conditions that the motor input power should be balanced by the dissipated power, steadystate whirling characteristics are obtained such as the whirling amplitude, the whirling frequency and the stability diagrams. Results show that the whirling stability is affected by the internal/external damping and the asymmetry as well as the motor voltage. Also, the whirling amplitude at the steadystate is increased and the motor speed is lowered as the internal damping becomes higher or the external damping is reduced. In addition, the asymmetry causes the variation of the whirling orbit, which becomes splitted into two distinct trajectories. Finally, non-ideal characteristics of the DC motor is found to reduce the whirling motion in case of steadystate whirling with high asymmetry and high internal damping.
