  • This paper primarily discusses the materiality of the body in Chinese "external medicine". Chinese external medicine views the body as something consisting of sinew and flesh. Furthermore, there are times when Chinese surgical techniques must be applied to the body in order to manage rotting flesh and other abnormal manifestations. The materiality of the Chinese body of external medicine encompasses the way in which Chinese doctors manufactured surgical implements, the sick person's bodily experience of pus and pain associated with external diseases, and the details of the process by which doctors evaluated whether or not to carry out surgical interventions. This essay will use the Qing manuscript "A Treatise on Seeking the Roots of Ulcer Medicine" as a central case study for discussing these issues, while also showing the connections between it and other external medicine texts of the Ming and Qing era. Its author, Zhu Feiyuan, was a doctor who lived during the 18th to 19th century in Qingpu (today's Shanghai). My essay will thus discuss Chinese external medicine from a historical perspective. The way in external medicine treated illness differed from the prescriptions and pulse signs that "internal medicine" employed, and its view of the body likewise differed from that of internal medicine. I hope that this essay can provide new viewpoints on the history of the body in Chinese medicine.

Methods We searched articles from Pubmed, Chinese Academic Journals (CAJ) and Oasis online databases. Searching keywords were 'external qigong', 'external qi gong', 'qi therapy', '外气', '关节' and '기공'. After searching the articles, we performed quality assessment using Cochrane risk of bias (RoB) tool and risk of bias assessment tool for non-randomized study (RoBANS). Results Among the 117 articles were searched, 2 randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) and 2 single-group before and after studies were finally selected. All of 4 studies showed that external Qigong therapy has significant effect on joint pain. Conclusions Although external Qigong therapy has therapeutic effect on joint pain, it is not common therapy yet. However, external Qigong therapy requires more interests and studies in the future, because it is faithful therapy for Korean medicine theory.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this review study is to identify clinical indications of Hwangryunhaedok-tang(HHT) external application and to suggest directions for future research and treatment by analyzing domestic cases applying HHT external treatment except for pharmacopuncture research. Methods : We searched 235 studies published in Korean since 2000 from four domestic databases: Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System(OASIS), Research Information Sharing Service(RISS), Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal(KTKP), and Korean studies Information Service Systems(KISS) using keywords such as 'HTT and external use', 'HHT and external agent' 'HHT and wet dressing', or 'HHT and case'. We excluded duplicate papers, papers related to acupuncture including pharmacopuncture, or papers not related to the topic. Results : We selected and analyzed seven case reports. HHT external agent was used alone in one case, as main treatment in two cases, and as adjuvant treatment in four cases. HHT external application was applied to various skin diseases accompanied by inflammation mainly in the form of wet dressings. Conclusion : HHT external agent may be effective on various skin diseases accompanied by inflammation when applied alone or in combination with other agents according to the treatment stage. Based on this results, further studies will be needed to establish the primary clinical indication of HHT external agent.
