  • The aim of this paper is to enhance the accuracy of predicting time-averaged external surface pressures on low-rise buildings by utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. To achieve this, benchmark studies of the Silsoe cube and the Texas Tech University (TTU) experimental building are employed for comparison with simulation results. The paper is structured into three main sections. In the initial part, an appropriate domain size is selected based on the precision of mean pressure coefficients on the windward face of the cube, utilizing Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models. Subsequently, recommendations regarding the optimal computational domain size for an isolated building are provided based on revised findings. Moving on to the second part, the Silsoe cube model is examined within a horizontally homogeneous computational domain using more accurate turbulence models, such as Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and hybrid RANS-LES models. For computational efficiency, transient simulation settings are employed, building upon previous studies by the authors at the Windstorm Impact, Science, and Engineering (WISE) Lab, Louisiana State University (LSU). An optimal meshing strategy is determined for LES based on a grid convergence study. Three hybrid RANS-LES cases are investigated to achieve desired enhancements in the distribution of mean pressure coefficients on the Silsoe cube. In the final part, a 1:10 scale model of the TTU building is studied, incorporating the insights gained from the second part. The generated flow characteristics, including vertical profiles of mean velocity, turbulence intensity, and velocity spectra (small and large eddies), exhibit good agreement with full-scale (TTU) measurements. The results indicate promising roof pressures achieved through the careful consideration of meshing strategy, time step, domain size, inflow turbulence, near-wall treatment, and turbulence models. Moreover, this paper demonstrates an improvement in mean roof pressures compared to other state-of-the-art studies, thus highlighting the significance of CFD simulations in building aerodynamics.

  • Korean government sets up a goal that jumps up to the third ranked powerful nation of offshore wind in the world until 2020 and announced "The plan for 2.5-gigawatt wind farm off the south-west coast by 2019". Such above, according to green energy policy, offshore wind farms(OWF) will be increased continuously. The development of OWF should be taken account of wind volume as well as marine traffic environment. Specially aids to navigation of OWF play a significant role in preventing collision between vessels navigating near waters and structures. For purpose of distinguishing OWF, IALA recommendations define installation of lights on SPS and IPS. However, there is no mention of light character that plays important role in identification of lights as marking offshore wind farm. Also the research on selection of proper light character has been insufficient state. Therefore in this paper, we analyzed internal and external regulations concerned marking with light on SPS and IPS in OWF. And suggested patterns and rhythms of light having not only easily recognized feature but also no confusion with other light of aids to navigation. The proposed light characters were verified by simulation, and the results were analysed that synchronism flickering of "Fl Y(4) 12s(SPS)" and "Fl Y 6s(IPS)" would be useful in combination of both lights.

  • This study has been made to execute a research in order to lead the improvement of indoor air quality, examining the indoor ventilation characteristics by using a numerical analysis method. To this end an extensive parametric investigation are made according to various external flow variables such as main wind direction and wind speed by season, building layout design, and location of ventilators, etc. in Daedeok Techno Valley, one of large-scaled apartment in Daejeon. It is observed there was a significant difference of main wind direction between summer and winter. The main wind direction in summer was a south wind, and on the contrary the direction in winter is northnorthwest, which is similar to the average main wind direction for 10 years. One of the important calculation results is that the change of wind direction causes a significant effect on the apartment ventilation by the change of pressure difference around each complex of apartment. In case of favorable area of ventilation, the indoor ventilation rate can meet 0.7 ACH from the standard value only with natural ventilation. On the contrary, in other area the value was much lower than the standard value. If the calculation result applies to the design of layout apartment or placement of ventilators, it will be greatly helpful to the energy saving because it can be parallel with the natural ventilation to help securing ventilation rate, not much depending on the mechanical ventilation.

  • An average of two to three typhoons that occur in the Philippines or Taiwan pass through Korea each year owing to the influence of the geographical location and western winds. Because Jinhae Bay is known as Korea's representative typhoon refuge, it is filled with ships during typhoons and later becomes saturated with ships anchored to the surrounding routes. If a strong wind drags an anchored ship, a collision accident may occur because of the short distance between the ships. Therefore, a systematic anchoring safety management of Jinhae Bay is required. In this study, the minimum wind speeds of a dragging anchor based on the water depths of Jinhae Bay anchorages were investigated. When 7-9 shackles were given, the minimum wind speeds were 48-63, 46-61, and 39-54 knots at depths of 20, 35, and 50 m, respectively. As the water depth increased, the length of the cable laid on the sea bed became shorter than 5 m owing to the external force, and the minimum wind speed showed a significant difference of 4-8 knots. In addition, ships with high holding power anchors (AC-14 type) had higher minimum wind speeds than ships with conventional anchors (ASS type). Finally, it was confirmed that at a depth of 50 m, dragging easily occurred even when a high holding power anchor was applied.

  • The increase in the use time of tunnel users due to the lengthening of the road tunnel may increase the evacuation time in case of fire, resulting in a large number of casualties. In order to reduce the casualties caused by fire, the "Road Tunnel Design Manual, Part 6 Tunnel" and "Road Tunnel Disaster Prevention Facility Installation and Management Guidelines" stipulate that ventilation facilities should be installed along with the extension of the tunnel. The ventilation system design factor considers the wind speed of the external natural wind to be at least 2.5 m/s, and it is applied upward according to the characteristics of the tunnel. As a result of analyzing the five-minute average wind speed data in the Daegwallyeong region for the past 6 years, it was analyzed that 15.8% of the windy days were winds of 10 m/s or more, and the maximum was 20 m/s. Therefore, in this study, when a fire occurs in a tunnel, the pattern of natural wind flowing into the tunnel and the backlayering distance of the tunnel fire smoke according to the maximum wind speed were analyzed. As a result, it was analyzed that a backflow of up to 490 m occurs when a gust of 20 m/s blows.

  • Four accidents occurred between 2020 and 2022 after car ferries built according to a coastal passenger ship modernization plan collided with other ships or came into contact with the dock when entering Jeju Port. Accidents primarily occurred owing to careless ship handling and drift by wind during ship handled by herself using bow and stern thrusters without tugboats. Accordingly, in this study, we analyzed the collision accident focusing on car ferry H and the critical wind speed at which the ship cannot be controlled using its own power, tugboat operation plan in increasing wind speed were proposed based on the power required for the ship to berth parallel to the pier without a tugboat considering the external force and moment generated while the ship is berthing. A analysis of the critical wind speed of car ferry H by relative wind direction when using tugboats or not according to the loading status and the berthing speed, showed that one tugboat should be used at the stern when the lateral wind speed is over 10 m/s and two tugboats should be used when the lateral wind speed is over 14m/s berthing at Jeju port.

  • When typhoon approaches, ship normally drops her anchor at proper anchorage for sheltering. If an anchoring ship is under the influence of typhoon, she can keep her position when the external force and counter force is balanced. Where, external force is induced by wind, wave and tidal currents while counter force is induced by holding power of anchor/chain and thrust force of main engine. In this study, authors presented a method to analyze theoretically the limit of external force for the ship to keep her position without being dragged and, to check the validity of method, applied this to the ship which had been anchored in Jinhae Bay when the typhoon MAEMI passed on September 2003.

  • As vessels are faster and bigger, higher safety navigation techniques have been required. In marine traffic area, buoy is to be one of the most important equipment, so that it should be built stable and robust. Verification in design level is good to accomplish it. This paper tries to implement visual program to confirm the external stability, which shows the movement on water by external factors such as wind, tide and current. Considering further requirements for additional influences or functions, design architecture for program introduces the concept of software component. Using Quest3D as the graphic tool, visual programming with software component concept can be implemented.

  • The Wonyenaejang is equivalent to the (senile)cataract in western medicine. The word cataract is used to describe the natural lens that has turned cloudy. As the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, it does not allow light to pass through it. Cataracts usually start as a slight cloudiness that progressively grows more opaque. As the cataract becomes more mature(increasingly opaque and dense), the retina receives less and less light. The light that does reach the retina becomes increasingly blurred and distorted. This causes gradual impairment of vision. If left untreated, cataracts can cause needless blindness. Although there are many kinds of cataracts, a senile cataract is the most common one. We chose the oriental medicine textbooks and the oriental medicine journals that were dealing with the symptoms, etiology, and internal/external treatments. The results were as follows : 1. The main causes of this disease are weak liver and kidney, burning up of the wind and heat in the liver and gall, weak spleen and stomach. 2. As the internal treatment of the Cataract, Geegukjihwangtang is mostly prescribed. 3. As the external treatment of the Cataract, (l) In the field of medicine for external application is commonly prescribed (2) In the field of drug action, frequently used treatments are as follows. emission of the evil, alleviation of fever, removal of lump of blood, and the medicine for external applications. (3) In the field of four Qi, cold medicine is commonly prescribed. (4) In the field of five tastes, bitter/hot/sweet mdicine are commonly prescribed. (5) In the field of toxicity, non-togic medicine is commonly prescribed. (6) In the field of channel distribution, most of the medicine belong to liver channel.
