  • We report state-of-the-art phosphorescent organic light emitting diode lifetime and efficiency performances for a range of emission colors. Lifetimes in excess of 100,000hrs have been demonstrated at display luminance levels for saturated red emission. External quantum efficiencies close to the theoretical maximum (e.g. 23% without enhanced optical output coupling) are also demonstrated for devices with lifetimes in excess of 15,000hrs at a display level luminance for both orange red and green.

  • We have synthesized 4'-nitrobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (NBCA) and fabricated the hole-only device consisting of ITO/NBCA SAM/TPD (1500 ${\AA}$)/Al (500 ${\AA}$) and the organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) consisting of ITO/NBCA SAM/TPD (600 ${\AA}$)/Alq3 (600 ${\AA}$)/Al (600 ${\AA}$). The prepared hole-only device with NBCA exhibited lower driving voltage than the device with 4-nitrobenzoic acid (NBA). OLEDs using NBCA also show high external quantum efficiency.

  • A new ionic liquid, 1-vinyl-3-heptylimidazolium iodide (VHpII), was synthesized and applied as a redox electrolyte for dye-sensitized solar cells. The chemical structure of the synthesized VHpII was confirmed using $^1H$ NMR. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the VHpII was stable for thermal stress of up to $250^{\circ}C$. The energy conversion efficiencies of the VHpII-based dye-sensitized solar cells were investigated in terms of the effect of a lithium iodide addition. A solar cell containing the redox couple of VHpII and iodine showed a conversion efficiency of 2.63% under 1 sun light intensity at AM 1.5. Adding 0.4 M LiI results in a conversion efficiency of 3.63%, which was an improvement of about 40%. The increased conversion efficiency was ascribed to an increase in external quantum efficiency.

  • High-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on multilayer transparent electrodes (MTEs) are reported. The dielectric/metal/dielectric (DMD) multilayer electrode based on a thin silver layer achieved high sheet conductance as small as $6{\Omega}/sp$ and a tuning capability in the optical and electrical properties by engineering the inner and outer dielectric layers. In the conventional normal bottom-emitting structure, a DMD-based OLED can be fabricated with 90% higher forward luminous efficiency and 30% higher external quantum efficiency (EQE) compared to ITO-based devices. Special attention was paid to the optimization method of such MTE structure considering both the injection and optical structures.

  • High-efficiency red phosphorescent OLEDs employing a novel red emitter and a multifunctional oligofluorene host are reported. With qazIr(acac) as the red phosphorescent dopant, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 19% and maximum power efficiency of 11 lm/W are achieved. In addition, single layer devices using such host and dopant materials have efficiencies up to 13%.

  • We have seen the effects of hole-injection buffer layer in organic light-emitting diodes using copper phthalocyanine(CuPc), poly(vinylcarbazole)(PVK), and Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS) in a device structure of ITO/buffer/TPD/$Alq_3$/Al. Polymer PVK and PEDOT:PSS buffer layer was made using spin casting method and the CuPc layer was made using thermal evaporation. Current-voltage characteristics, luminance-voltage characteristics and efficiency of device were measured at room temperature with a thickness variation of buffer layer. We have obtained an improvement of the external quantum efficiency by a factor of two, four, and two and half when the CuPc, PVK, and PEDOT:PSS buffer layer are used, respectively. The enhancement of the efficiency is attributed to the improved balance of holes and elelctrons due to the use of hole-injection buffer layer. The CuPc and PEDOT:PSS layer functions as a hole-injection supporter and the PVK layer as a hole-blocking one.

  • In order to improve the power efficiency of multi-layer organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), electron injection into ETL(electron transport layer) from cathode at the interface between ETL and cathode was enhanced by interposing a proper electron injection layer at the interface. The HTL(hole transport layer) and ETL materials used were N, N'diphenyl- N, N' - bis(3-methylphenyl-1, 1'- biphenyl - 4, 4 'diamine (TPD) and tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum ($Alq_3$) respectively. Cathodes using co-evaporated Al-CsF, Al-KF, and Al-NaF composites are adopted to enhance the electrical and optical properties of OLEDs. OLEDs with alkaline metal-doped cathode show a luminance of as high as 35,000 cd/$m^2$, and external quantum efficiency about 1.35 %. In addition, they show higher power efficiency at all bias conditions and good reproducibility.

  • Tandem white organic light emitting diodes (WOLEDs) are fabricated by using a transparent interconnecting layer of Al:LiF composite/molybdenum oxides ($MoO_3$). We demonstrate two types of tandem WOLEDs consisting of two color emissions (red and blue emission) and three color emissions (red, green and blue emission). Tandem WOLED consisting of three color emission shows higher external quantum efficiency and current efficiency.

  • Phosphors with oxide host material, YAG:$Ce^{3+}$ and $(Ca,Sr,Ba)_2SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ yellow phosphor, has been used for LED applications. The WLEDs using these phosphors are widely used for LCD backlighting, automobile, and general lighting applications since they have high conversion efficiency and good thermal and chemical stability which can meet necessary life time of LED products up to now. With advances of LED chip technology, the external quantum efficiency and driving current in chip get higher so that the phosphors for high power chip are required to maintain high conversion efficiency and stability at high temperature due to the heat dissipated from LED chips. In addition, higher color rendering index of LED lighting and color reproducibility of LCD than those of LEDs with single yellow phosphors are required. In order to overcome these technical issues rising from evolution of LED technology, new phosphors are in demand and nitride phosphors, one of the promising new candidate materials, will be discussed here.

  • Novel blue host material, 4,4'-(dinaphthalen-2-yl)-1,1'-binaphthyl (DNBN), was designed and synthesized for OLEDs. In order to test the electroluminescent properties of DNBN, DNBN was used as the host materials for a blue emitter, PCVtPh. The device exhibited deep-blue emission with the CIEx,y coordinates (x=0.15, y=0.08) at 8.0 V, a luminous efficiency of 1.66 cd/A, a power efficiency of 0.77 lm/W and an external quantum efficiency of 2.30 % at 20 mA/$cm^2$, respectively.
