  • Energy consumption is a key issue in body sensor networks (BSNs) since energy-constrained sensors monitor the vital signs of human beings in healthcare applications. In this paper, packet size optimization for BSNs has been analyzed to improve the efficiency of energy consumption. Existing studies on packet size optimization in wireless sensor networks cannot be applied to BSNs because the different operational characteristics of nodes and the channel effects of in-body and on-body propagation cannot be captured. In this paper, automatic repeat request (ARQ), forward error correction (FEC) block codes, and FEC convolutional codes have been analyzed regarding their energy efficiency. The hop-length extension technique has been applied to improve this metric with FEC block codes. The theoretical analysis and the numerical evaluations reveal that exploiting FEC schemes improves the energy efficiency, increases the optimal payload packet size, and extends the hop length for all scenarios for in-body and on-body propagation.

  • Mack (1981), Skilling and Wolfe (1977, 1978) proposed typical nonparametric method in randomized block design with replications. In this paper, we proposed the procedures based on placement as extension of the two sample placement tests described in Orban and Wolfe (1982) and treatment versus control tests described in Kim (1999). Also Monte Carlo simulation study is adapted to compare power of the proposed procedure with those of previous procedures.

  • A psoas compartment block has been used to provide anesthesia for orthopedic surgical procedures and analgesia for post-operative pain. Currently, this block is advocated for relieving pain in the lower extremity and pelvic area resulting from various origins. We report a case of a 69-year-old male patient who had gait abnormality with posterior pelvic and hip pain, which were both aggravated by hip extension. From the magnetic resonance image, the patient was found to have a laterally herniated intervertebral disc at the L2/3 level, which compressed the right psoas muscle. This was thought to be the origin of the pain, so a psoas compartment block was performed using 0.25% chirocaine with triamcinolone 5mg, and the pain in both the pelvis and hip were relieved.

  • As entering the information age of the 21st century, Korea is actively processing many digitalizing businesses related to information source of the Korean academic science at the government level based on the Korean advanced digital technologies, which makes them more evolved through the internet networks in Korea. The definition of 'Newly found ideographs(新出漢字)' are made by researching and extracting from the old Chinese documents through the digitalizing process and they are not registered yet among the block of Unicode & extended Chinese characters those are existent international standard. Presently Korea is in the middle of brisk developing computerized old documents in the huge scale. Meanwhile, the international standard of Chinese characters in mostly Asian countries where using them is processing and developing by IRG. Therefore, Korean processing works is very important which are included extracting precisely 'Newly found ideographs' founded from building its database, organizing as an international standard code, submitting the International organization and finally registering as the best standard code.

  • In this paper, An 8${\times}$l ID-IDCT processor with adder-based distributed arithmetic(DA) and bit-serial method Is presented. To reduce hardware cost and to improve operating speed, the proposed 8${\times}$1 ID-IDCT used the bit-serial method and DA method. The transform of coefficient equation results in reduction in hardware cost and has a regularity in implementation. The sign extension computation method reduces operation clock. As a result of logic synthesis, The gate count of designed 8${\times}$1 1D-IDCT is 17,504. The sign extension processing block has gate count of 3,620. That is 20% of total 8${\times}$1 ID-IDCT architecture. But the sign extension processing block improves more than twice in throughput. The designed IDCT processes 50Mpixels per second and at a clock frequency of 100MHz.

  • An extension of the weighted buddy system, called the extended-weighted buddy system, for dynamic memory allocation in an object-oriented computer is presented. The extended-weighted buddy system allows block sizes of $2^k,\;3*2^k,\;5*2^k,\;7*2^k$, whereas the original weighted buddy system allowed block sizes of $2^k\;and\;3*2^k$. This extension is achieved at only the cost of additional 3 bits per block for memory management unit. Simulation results are presented which compare our method with the weighted buddy system. These results indicate that, for uniform request distributions, our system has less internal memory fragmentation than the weighted buddy system(approximately 60%). And, for exponential request distributions, it has less internal memory fragmentation than the weighted buddy method (approximately 50%). The external fragmentation is greater for this system than the weighted buddy system. But, our system has less total memory fragmentation for exponential request distributions, and two systems take a similar total memory fragmentation for uniform request distributions, so we can substitutes the extended-weighted buddy system for weighted buddy system.

  • Recently, High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) has been developed as a new video coding standard mainly focusing on the coding of ultra high definition (UHD) videos as the high resolution and high quality videos are getting more popular. Furthermore, the scalable extension of HEVC is being standardized for more efficient provision of HD and UHD services in the communications-broadcasting convergence environment. In this paper, we propose an improved scalable video coding method of H.264/AVC to achieve high coding efficiency particularly for UHD and HD videos. The basic idea is to allow large block size in H.264/AVC SVC, which results in more efficient inter-layer prediction and syntax elements coding. The experimental results show that it achieves an average 4.53% reduction in BD-rate relative to H.264/AVC SVC.

  • Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) of ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T developed the HEVC Screen Content Coding (HEVC SCC) standard as the HEVC extension for the screen content video coding. The Intra Block Copy (IBC) is the most effective tool adopted in HEVC SCC and predicts current block from already reconstructed neighboring blocks in the same picture. To reduce the amount of data in BV (Block Vector) to be transmitted, a BV predictor (BVP) is used to generate the BV differences in the IBC BV coding. In this paper, we analyze the current BV prediction process using HEVC reference software SCM-2.0 and SCM-4.0. Based on the analysis results, we propose an improved BVP candidate selection algorithm by adding a search process for adjacent BVs in addition to the existing spatial BVP candidates. Experimental results show that the BD-rate reduction of our proposed improvements ranges from 0.2% to 1%.

  • ABA triblock copolymers of L-lactide and trimethylene carbonate with several different compositions were prepared by sequential ring-opening polymerization in the presence of diethylene glycol. Also chain-extension reactions of the resulting copolymers were carried out using hexamethylene diisocyanate to produce relatively high molecular weight polymers, which could be cast into elastomeric tough films. The polymers with certain L-lactide contents were partially crystalline, exhibiting two-phase morphology. The polymer films showed reversible elastic behavior under tensile tension, providing a novel thermoplastic elastomer possessing desirable properties such as biodegradability and good mechanical properties.

  • Recently, spatial information technologies using remotely sensed imagery and functionality of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) have been widely utilized to various types of transportation-related applications. In this study, extraction programs of some practical indices, to be effectively used in transportation reference planning problem, were designed and implemented as prototyped extensions in GIS development environment: traffic flow estimation (TFL/TFB), urban rural index (URI), and accessibility index (AI). In TFL/TFB, user can obtain quantitative results on traffic flow estimation at link/block using high-resolution satellite imagery. Whereas, URI extension provides urban-rural characteristics related to road system, being considered one of important factors in transportation planning. Lastly, AI extension helps to obtain accessibility index between nodes of road segments and surrounding district areas touched or intersected with the road network system, and it also provides useful information for transportation planning problems. This approach is regarded as one of RS-T (Remote Sensing in Transportation), and it is expected to expand as new application of remotely sensed imagery.
