One of the major divisions in the mathematical modelling of a tubular structure is to include the effect of the transverse shear stress and rotary inertia in vibration of members. During the past three decades, problems of vibration of tubular structures have been considered by some authors, and special attention has been devoted to the Timoshenko theory. There have been considerable efforts, also, to apply the method of spectral analysis to vibration of a structure with rectangular section beams. The purpose of this paper is to compare the results of the spectrally formulated finite element analyses for the Timoshenko theory with those derived from the conventional finite element method for a tubular structure. The spectrally formulated finite element starts at the same starting point as the conventional finite element formulation. However, it works in the frequency domain. Using a computer program, the proposed formulation has been extended to derive the dynamic response of a tubular structure under an impact load.
Background: Mitigation of primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) is a significant issue in the nuclear industry. Advanced nickel-based alloys with lower susceptibility have been adopted, although they do not seem to be entirely immune from PWSCC during normal operation. With regard to structural integrity assessments of the relevant components, an accurate evaluation of crack growth rate (CGR) is important. Methods: For the present study, the extended finite element method was adopted from among diverse meshless methods because of its advantages in arbitrary crack analysis. A user-subroutine based on the strain rate damage model was developed and incorporated into the crack growth evaluation. Results: The proposed method was verified by using the well-known Alloy 600 material with a reference CGR curve. The analyzed CGR curve of the alternative Alloy 690 material was then newly estimated by applying the proven method over a practical range of stress intensity factors. Conclusion: Reliable CGR curves were obtained without complex environmental facilities or a high degree of experimental effort. The proposed method may be used to assess the PWSCC resistance of nuclear components subjected to high residual stresses such as those resulting from dissimilar metal welding parts.
This work presents the three-dimensional extended strain smoothing approach in the framework of finite element method, so-called smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) for quasi-incompressible hyperelastic materials undergoing the large deformations. The proposed method is known that the incompressible limits, such as over-estimation of stiffness and distorted mesh sensitivity, can be overcome in two dimensions. Therefore, in this paper, the idea of Cell-based, Edge-based and Node-based strain smoothing approaches is extended to three-dimensions. The construction of subcells and smoothing domains for each methods are explained. The smoothed strain-displacement matrix and the stiffness matrix are obtained on each smoothing domain in the same manner with two-dimensional S-FEM. Various numerical tests are studied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of 3D-S-FEM. The obtained results are compared with analytical solutions to express the efficacy of the methods.
Finite element alternating method have been suggested and used for assessing the integrity of cracked structures. In the paper, in order to analyze arbitrarily shaped three dimensional cracks, the finite element alternating method is extended. The cracks are modeled as a distribution of displacement discontinuities by the displacement discontinuity method and the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method. Applied the proposed method to three dimensional crack included in the elbow, the efficiency and applicability of the method were demonstrated.
Finite element alternating method has been suggested and used effectively to obtain the fracture parameters in assessing the integrity of cracked structures. The method obtains the solution from alternating independently between the FEM solution for an uncracked body and the crack solution in an infinite body. In the paper, the finite element alternating method is extended in order to obtain the elastic-plastic stress fields of a three dimensional inner crack. The three dimensional crack solutions for an infinite body were obtained using symmetric Galerkin boundary element method. As an example of a three dimensional inner crack, a penny-shaped crack in a finite body was analyzed and the obtained elastc-plastic stress fields were compared with the solution obtained from the finite element analysis with fine mesh. It is noted that in the region ahead of the crack front the stress values from FEAM are close to the values from FEM. But large discrepancy between two values is observed near the crack surfaces.
In this paper, a finite viscoelastic continuum model for rubber and its finite element analysis are presented. This finite viscoelatic model based on continuum mechanics is an extended model of Johnson and Wuigley's 1-D model. In this extended model, continuum based kinematic measures are rigorously defied and by using this kinematic measures, elastic stage law and flow rule are introduced. In kinematics, three configuration are introduced. In kinematics, three configuration are introduced. They are reference, current and virtual visco configurations. In elastic state law, it is assumed that at a certain time, there exists an elastic potential which describes the recoverable elastic energy. From this elastic potential, elastic state law is derived. The proposed flow rule is based on phenomenological observation. The flow rule gives precise relaxation response. In finite element approximation, mixed Lagrangian description is used, where total and similar method of updated Lagrangian descriptions are used together. This approach reduces the numerical job and gives simple nonlinear syatem of equations. To satisfy the incompressible condition, penalty-type modified Mooney-Rivlin energy function is adopted. By this method nearly incompressible condition is obtain the virtual visco configuration. For verification, uniaxial stretch tests are simulated for various stretch rates. The simulated results show good agreement with experiments. As a practical experiments. As a preactical example, pressurized rubber plate is simulated. The result shows finite viscoelastic effects clearly.
Many analysis methods, including finite element method, have been suggested and used for assessing the integrity of cracked structures. In the paper, in order to analyze arbitrarily shaped three dimensional cracks in an infinite body, the finite element alternating method is extended. The cracks are modeled as a distribution of displacement discontinuities by the displacement discontinuity method and the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method. Applied the proposed method to several example problems for planner cracks in finite bodies, the accuracy and efficiency of the method were demonstrated.
In order to overcome the key shortcoming of Hamilton's principle, recently, the extended framework of Hamilton's principle was developed. To investigate its potential in further applications especially for material non-linearity problems, the focus is initially on a classical single-degree-of-freedom elasto-viscoplastic model. More specifically, the extended framework is applied to the single-degree-of-freedom elasto-viscoplastic model, and a corresponding weak form is numerically implemented through a temporal finite element approach. The method provides a non-iterative algorithm along with unconditional stability with respect to the time step, while yielding whole information to investigate the further dynamics of the considered system.
This paper deals with the applicability of a new extended layerwise optimization method for thermal buckling load optimization of laminated composite plates. The design objective is the maximization of the critical thermal buckling of the laminated plates. The fibre orientations in the layers are considered as design variables. The first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used for the finite element solution of the laminates. Finally, the numerical analysis is carried out to show the applicability of extended layerwise optimization algorithm of laminated plates for different parameters such as plate aspect ratios and boundary conditions.
Power flow analysis(PFA) methods have shown many advantages in noise predictions and vibration analysis in medium-to-high frequency ranges. Applying the finite element technique to PFA has produced power flow finite element method(PFFEM) that can be effectively used for analysis of vibration of complicated structures. PFADS(power flow analysis design system) based on PFFEM as the vibration analysis program has been developed for vibration predictions and analysis of coupled structural systems. In this paper, to improve the function of vibro-acoustic coupled analysis in PFADS, the PFFEM has been extended for analysis of the interior noise problems in the vibro-acoustic fully coupled systems. The vibro-acoustic fully coupled PFFEM formulation based on energy coupled relations is extended to structural system model by using appropriate modifications to structural-structural, structural-acoustic and acoustic-acoustic joint matrices. It has been applied to prediction of the interior noise in two room model coupled with panels, and the PFFEM results are compared to those of statistical energy analysis(SEA).
