Analysis of aerodynamic characteristics on the Korean Tilting Train Express (한국형 틸딩 차량의 공력 특성 해석)

  • Numerical analysis of aerodynamic characteristics was differently performed according to the running situation of the Korean Tilting Train eXpress (TTX) that would be introduced for an improvement in efficiency of the used railroad track. Fluent6.0 was used for the analysis of Non-tilting case, Tilting case and Passing-by case with the model of TTX. As a result, the aerodynamic drag had little difference between Tilting and Non-tilting case. However, pressure contour under the train of Tilting case was not symmetry because the gap between a train and the ground was different at both sides. And this disparity of pressure worked on the side force. In Passing-by case attraction and counterattraction occurred alternately and affected to the opposite train. When two trains were side by side, the maximum attraction was generated especially. Through an analysis of pressure wave in tunnel a large variation of pressure was generated by the bluff nose of TTX. The results in this study would be good data for the aerodynamic characteristic on TTX and provide important information to judgment of running safety.

  • The development of tilting train has been required for speed-up on the conventional electric railroad due to the characteristic of Korean railroad with a lot of curve track. The study and development of a tilting system and a tilting bogie which have a different mechanism with high speed train will play a important role for enhancement of technology for Korean railway. The study for tilting pantograph mechanism to decrease the displacement between a catenary and a center of pantograph happened when the carbody is tilted in order to maintain the ride comfort and stability m a curving track is proceeding with the development of tilting train. In this paper, we introduce the design concept for the tilting mechanism of pantograph and the role and characteristics for several devices adopted in the tilting mechanism of pantograph. Through the kinematic analysis of tilting mechanism, we will obtain and calculate the optimal tilting angular velocity and acceleration in order to keep the contact behavior of a pantograph and a catenary according to tilting of a carbody.

  • The purpose of this research is to suggest the ultimate solution to the interior elements and ways to express specific function within interior design of the new high-speed train station in Korea through careful studies based on the characteristics of each areas in the stations. During the research, it became very clear that the most important points in designing of the high speed train station's interior space can be found from close examination on whether each space allocation was thoughtfully organized to provide enough space to accommodate various activities of the users. Another point is to realize, within the space program, that there should be a clear understanding of the future expansion plan and reserving sufficient areas for the future growth. Also the problem of requiring larger floor areas to accommodate various functions divided by separate units must be recognized simultaneously during the programming. The new high-sped train must be able to function as a multi service facility of the future. In summary this research is to present datas and suggestion to various areas in the station and redefine its new meaning of train station space program with much borader concept which can be adopted to the process of better space programing.

  • In this study, sound transmission loss (STL) is investigated on the multi-layered windows used in the KTX-sancheon and next generation HEMU-400x high speed train. Using TLOSS, which is developed as a special purpose STL analysis program, STLs of the multi-layered glass windows are analytically investigated and compared with the mass law result. Window specimens for the two train models are manufactured and intensity transmission losses are measured based on ASTM E2249-02. The problems in aspect of sound insulation are diagnosed on the two window models. The aim of this study is to provide useful data for the improvement of the interior noise in the high speed train.

  • This study focuses on finding ECO driving patterns which consider driving safety of the ATO system train and reliability and which optimize efficiency of the driving energy consumption. Research results derived by performing simulation of those 5 models show that the emergency braking which affects safety of passenger and the machinery is minimized, and safe driving speed is maintained by the prohibition of drastic acceleration/deceleration, coasting and constant-speed driving. Therefore if this result is applied to the urban railway train by amending or making ATO program to save energy usage that improve environmental quality, its effects as ECO driving pattern is huge.

  • Korean Train Express (KTX) has opened to commercial traffic since 2004 at maximum speed 300km/h. As the speed of the train becomes higher, the conditions of the rail affect the behavior of the running train. To secure the safety and reliability of high speed railway, it is necessary to inspect rail irregularities and to maintain the rail regularly. The authors designed the high speed rain measurement system over 300km/h. And we installed the system to Korea High-speed Railway (HSR 350x). In this paper, we introduce the high speed rail measurement system for HSR 350x and show verification of the performance of the system through test runs.
