  • As one of the REACH obligations, the extended safety data sheet (eSDS) should be communicated within the supply chain under the REACH Regulation. Based on technical guidance documents published on the ECHAs website and survey of EU's recent REACH-related informations, this paper includes a study on details of how to develop exposure scenarios (ES) such as structure of ES, process of ES develpoment, standard workflows and key input data to develop ES with an introduction of eSDS concept. This paper also contains an overview on operational conditions (OCs) and risk management measures (RMMs) that are what to consider when building an ES. The structure of Chesar (Chemical Safety Assessment and Report tool) developed by European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is studied with a review of the available exposure estimation tools for workers, environment and consumers. Case example of generic exposure scenario (GES) for organic solvent is presented. To guide Korean EU-exporting companies, their participating roles in three steps of preparing ES are addressed.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate exposure levels of the extremely low frequency magnetic fields(ELF-MF) radiated from various electric facilities in Liquid Crystal Display(LCD) manufacturing processes. Methods: This study measured the exposure levels of personal and local ELF-MF for the electronic facilities installed in two LCD manufacturing companies. Samplers were installed around workers' waist during working hours to identify personal exposure levels, and direct reading equipment were located at 3 cm, 10 cm, and 30 cm away from the surface of the electronic facilities to measure local exposure levels. Average and maximum(ceiling) values were calculated for personal and local exposure levels. Results: Average and maximum of personal exposure levels for each worker were 0.56(mean) ± 0.02(SE) µT and 6.31 ± 0.75 µT, respectively. Statistical analyses of the study found that maximum of the personal exposure levels for engineers was significantly higher than that for operators since engineers spend more time near the electronic facilities for repairing. The range of maximum personal exposure levels was 0.50 ~ 43.50 µT and its highest level was equivalent to 4.35 % of ACGIH(American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists) exposure limit value(1 mT). Maximum of local exposure levels was 8.18 ± 0.52 µT and the electronic facilities with higher exposure levels were roof rail and electric panel, which were not related to direct manufacturing. The range of maximum local exposure levels was 0.60 ~ 287.20 µT and its highest level was equivalent to 28.7 % of the ACGIH exposure limit value. Lastly, the local exposure levels significantly decreased as the measurement distance from the electronic facilities increased. Conclusions: Maximum of personal and local exposure levels did not exceed the exposure limit value of ACGIH. However, it is recommended to keep the workers as far as possible from the sources of ELF-MF.

  • This paper demonstrates an experimental study to evaluate the effects of environmental exposures on the bond between ribbed Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) reinforcing bars and concrete. The equation recommended by ACI 440-1R-06, for the bond stress, was evaluated in this study. A total of 16 pullout samples, 12with GFRP bars and 4with steel bars, were exposed to two different harsh environments for different periods of time. The exposed harsh environments included direct sun exposure and cyclic splash zone sea water. The variation in the shear (bond) strengths before and after exposure was considered as a measure of the durability of the bond between GFRP bars and concrete.Experimental results showed there is no significant difference of the bond strength between 60 and 90 days of exposures. It also showed that the empirical equation of the bond stress calculated by ACI 440-IR-06 is very conservative.

  • The variations of temperature and velocity fields in a Hele-Shaw convection cell (HSC) were investigated using a holographic interferometry and 2-D PIV system with varying Rayleigh number. To measure quasisteady changes of temperature field, two different measurement methods of holographic interferometry; double-exposure method and real-time method, were employed. In the double-exposure method, unwanted waves can be eliminated effectively using digital image processing technique and the reconstruction images are clear, but transient flow structure cannot be reconstructed clearly. On the other hand, transient convective flow can be reconstructed well using the real-time method. However, the fringe patterns reconstructed by the real-time method contain more noises, compared with the double-exposure method. Experimental results show a steady flow pattern at low Rayleigh numbers and a time-dependent periodic flow structure at high Rayleigh numbers. The periodic flow pattern at high Rayleigh numbers obtained by the real-time holographic interferometer method is in a good agreement with the PIV results.

  • A pilot field study was conducted to measure indoor and personal exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) levels using personal monitors from January to February in 1989. The principal objectives of the study was to design and evaluate the research protocol and the instrumentation performance for application to the conduct of a large-scale personal monitoring program. The mean CO concentrations in kitchen and in bedroom were 23.4 and 11.9 ppm, respectively, while mean concentration of personal CO exposure was 18.9 ppm. It was found that the mean CO concentrations in kitchen exceeded 20 ppm of the Korea ambient CO standard(8-hr average) not to be exceeded more than three times per year. The results suggest that indoor CO levels in Korean houses appear to be affected by use of coal briquette for heating any cooking.

  • During the lateral x-ray testing of lumbar, in order to obtain the optimal image for diagnosis and to minimize the exposure dose, a glass dosimeter and spatial dose measuring meter was used to measure and evaluate the exposure dose and spatial dose distribution of each organs. The exposure dose of the organs have increased as they were closer to the X-ray tube and when the radiation field was completely opened, the exposure dose was increased. In addition, scattered rays have increased as the distance got closer to the subject and with the distance of more than 200cm, 95% of scattered rays was reduced. Such results can anticipate the exposure dose of patients during the lumbar x-ray test in the future and it can be proposed as a data for determining the testing methods and expected to be widely used as an important basic data for reducing the medical exposure dose.

  • Practical devices for measuring personal exposure to nitrogen dioxide(NO$_2$) have been made for epidemiological studies of the health effects of air pollution Standard methods for NO$_2$ measurement such as the chemiluminescent method and Saltzman method are not suitable for personal exposure because they are heavy, large and complicated to operate. In this study, a passive monitor was tested for the measurements of indoor and outdoor NO$_2$ level. Through a comparative analysis of data sets obtained by on-site chemiluminescence system, we assessed the accuracy and precision of NO$_2$ passive monitors. We also examined the possibility of passive monitor in the study of indoor, outdoor and personal NO$_2$ exposure. The accuracy and precision of NO$_2$ passive monitor were analyzed assuming measurements of on-site chemiluminescence system is reference value and using duplicated measure- ments, respectively. From these analysis the NO$_2$ passive monitor was useful for measuring indoor, outdoor and personal exposure. And NO$_2$ level from on-site chemiluminescence systems could not properly represent the personal NO$_2$ exposure as well as indoor and outdoor level of ones house. Personal exposures were correlated more strongly with indoor NO$_2$ concentrations than with outdoor NO$_2$ concentrations. Since activity pattern of each person is different, it was considered that personal daily behavior and life-style might prevent the air pollutant exposure.
