비용매증기 유발 상 전이 공정을 이용한 PES 멤브레인 제조에 있어 2-butoxyethanol 첨가 효과 (Effect of 2-butoxyethanol Additive in the Casting Solution on the Characteristics of Nonsolvent Vapor Induced Phase Inversion PES Membranes)

  • 본 연구에서는 비용매 첨가제 BE와 습도 및 노출 시간이 정밀여과막의 구조, 투과특성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 멤브레인은 PES/DMF/TSA/PVP/BE 혼합 용액을 물에 침지하여 제조하였다. 다양한 농도의 BE가 첨가된 캐스팅 용액들을 공기 중의 수분이 흡착될 수 있도록 상대습도 60%와 80%로 달리하여 40초와 90초 동안 노출시켰으며, 그 결과로 만들어진 멤브레인 투과 성능과 표변 및 단면 구조와의 연관성을 조사하였다. 멤브레인의 특성은 capillary flow porometer, FE-SEM 및 순수 투과 장치를 이용하여 이루어졌다. PES 멤브레인의 표면 구조는 상대 및 노출 시간에 의해 크게 영향을 받는다. 또한 BE의 첨가는 특정한 습도와 노출 시간에서 표면 및 내부의 구조의 조절이 용이함을 확인할 수 있었다.

UV-LED를 이용한 광조형 장치 개발 (Development of Stereolithography Apparatus by using UV-LED)

  • The stereolithography(SL) process is a type of fabrication technology which relies on photopolymerization. It has a relatively simple fabrication process and a resolution of several tens of ${\mu}m$. Recently, SL technology has been applied to various areas, such as bioengineering and MEMS devices, due to the development of advanced materials. This technologycan be divided intothe scanning(SSL) and projection (PSL) types. In this paper, in stereolithography, parts are fabricated by curing photopolymeric resins with light. The application of stereolithography can now include fabricated parts. This process, called stereolithography, can fabricate parts by taking into account theirdegrees of geometry complexity. In particular, UV-LED stereolithography can perform quite rapid fabrication in which specific cross-sections are cured upon exposure to light.

Retention of Endothelial Cells adhered on Polyurethane Surface under Flow Condition

  • Construction of the stable monolayer of endothelial cells onto physicochemically modified polymeric surFace is one of the appropriate method to develop the small caliber vascular graft with the long-term patency. In this study, we constructed the monolayer of endothelial cells on the fibronectin rind the extracellular matrix-coated polyurethane surface derived from human fibroblast cells. To elucidate the adhesion strength of endothelial cells on the extracellular matrix-coated polyurethane, a laminar flow chamber apparatus was developed to exposure the shear stress on the apical membrane of ondothelial cells. Endothelial cells show the strongest adhesion after two days of seeding onto the fibronectin-coated polyurethane surface, whereas endothelial cells on the extracellular matrix derived from the human flbroblast cells show the minimal doubling time of cellular growth.

Over-expression of Cu/ZnSOD Increases Cadmium Tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana

  • Over-expression of a copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/ZnSOD) resulted in substantially increased tolerance to cadmium exposure in Arabidopsis thaliana. Lower lipid peroxidation and $H_2O_2$ accumulation and the higher activities of $H_2O_2$ scavenging enzymes, including catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in transformants (CuZnSOD-tr) compared to untransformed controls (wt) indicated that oxidative stress was the key factor in cadmium tolerance. Although progressive reductions in the dark-adapted photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) and quantum efficiency yield were observed with increasing cadmium levels, the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were less marked in CuZnSOD-tr than in wi. These observations indicate that oxidative stress in the photosynthetic apparatus is a principal cause of Cd-induced phytotoxicity, and that Cu/ZnSOD plays a critical role in protection against Cd-induced oxidative stress.

Anxiolytic effect of chronic ginseng treatment using elevated T-maze in mice

  • The roots of the plant Korean ginseng have been extensively used in the traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The effects of chronic administration of Korean ginseng extract (KGE) were investigated on two different anxiety models: the elevated T-maze (for inhibitory avoidance and escape measurements) and the open field test (OFT). Diazepam (1 mg/kg), KGE (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg) were administered orally for 15 days. On the 14th day, mice were previously exposed for 30 min to one of the open arms of the T-maze, 24 h before the test. On 15th day, mice had two exposures to the enclosed and open arm of the elevated T-maze followed by exposure to the open field apparatus. The number of line crossings in the apparatus was used to assess locomotor changes. Cumulative Concentration Response Curve of 5-HT was plotted using rat fundus which were pre-treated in a similar way. Treatment with Diazepam (1 mg/kg) and KGE (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg) significantly (P < 0.05) impaired inhibitory avoidance performance but did not impair escape latency. In OFT, diazepam facilitated locomotion as compared to vehicle and other treatment groups. KGE at any of the selected doses did not impair locomotion. Concentration response curve of 5-HT was shifted towards the right with suppression of maxima in rats treated with KGE. The results suggest that KGE exerts anxiolytic like behaviour in a specific subset of defensive behaviour, particularly those related to generalized anxiety disorder.

비파괴검사 장치 내 방사선원 위치감시용 섬광필름의 발광성능 평가 (Evaluation of luminance performance of scintillating film for monitoring the position of a radioactive source in an NDT apparatus)

  • 최근 비파괴검사 현장에서 검사 중 검사장치 내 방사선원의 위치를 확인하지 못하여 방사선 과피폭 사고가 종종 발생하고 있다. 본 연구는 방사선원의 노출여부나 위치 미인지로 인한 방사선 사고를 예방하기 위해 방사선원위치를 감시할 수 있는 섬광필름을 개발하는데 있다. 섬광필름은 방사선 비파괴 검사 장비의 가이드튜브 내에 존재하는 선원의 위치를 육안으로 탐지할 수 있는 신소재이다. 연구를 통해 섬광필름의 발광성능을 평가하고 최적의 필름 설계를 꾀하였다. 필름에 적용된 발광물질은 무기 섬광체를 이용하였고, 다양한 층을 갖는 형태의 필름을 제작하여 성능을 평가하였다. 필름의 발광성능은 광도계를 이용하여 측정하였고, 비파괴 검사장비는 Ir-192 감마선 조사기를 사용하였다. 실험결과, 섬광필름의 발광은 육안으로 선원의 위치를 감시할 수 있었으며, 선원의 이동에 따라서 발광영역도 동시에 이동하면서 형성되었다. 또한, 섬광필름에 반사층을 두는 것은 광 이용률의 증대시켜 발광성능을 높이는 데 매우 효과적이었다. 섬광체와 분산용제의 혼합비에 따라서도 성능변화가 나타났으며, 일반적으로 섬광체의 양이 높을수록 발광성능은 높게 나타났다. 그러나 분산 특성이 변화로 혼합비는 일정 농도 이하로 제한되었다. 섬광체 중에서는 $Gd_2O_2S(Tb)$ 무기섬광체가 가장 높은 발광성능을 보여주었다. 개발된 섬광필름을 비파괴 검사 장비에 적용하게 된다면 방사선종사자에게 보다 안전한 작업환경을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

Effects of Ultraviolet-B Radiation on Growth and Photosynthesis in Cucumber Primary Leaves

  • In the present study we studied the growth, photosynthetic traits and protective mechanisms against oxidative stress in the primary loaves of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings with or without UV-B treatment. Cucumber seedings were irradiated with UV-B for 10 days in environment-controlled growth chambers. The primary leaves irradiated with UV-B showed reduction in leaf length and decreased biomass production. The reduced biomass production seemed to be due to a negative effect of UV-B radiation on the photosynthetic process. Changes in chemical properties of leaf, such as chi a/b ratio affected photosynthesis. UV-B significantly affected chl b content compared with chi a in the light harvesting complex resulting reduced photosynthetic activity Fv/Fm decreased with an UV-B stress, suggesting that the photosynthetic apparatus, and particularly, PS II was damaged under UV-B stress. Malondialdehyde(MDA) concentration which represents the state of membrane lipid peroxidation Increased significantly under UV-B stress confirming an oxidative stress. UV-B exposure with SA solution(0.1-1.0 mM) can partially ameliorated some of the detrimental effects of UV-B stress. Leaf injuries including loss of chlorophyll and decreased ratio of Fv/Fm were reduced with combined application of UV-B and SA. ABA and JA showed similar mode of action in physiological effects on photosynthetic activities though the levels were lower than those from SA treated plants. Chloroplast ultrastructure was also affected by UV-B exposure. The thickness of leaf tissue components decreased and the number of grana and thylakoids was reduced in chloroplast applied UV-B or SA alone. At combined stress granal and stromal thylakoids were less affected. The leaves under combined stress acquired a significant tolerance to oxidative stress. From these results, it can be suggested that SA may have involved a protective role against UV-B induced oxidative damage.

이동형 방사선 차폐장치의 성능평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Performance Evaluation of Portable Radiation Shielding Apparatus)

  • When using a mobile X-ray unit, primary radiation creates medical images and secondary radiation scatters in many directions, which reduces image quality and causes exposure to patients, care givers and medical personnel. The purpose of this study was to develop a radiation shielding system for effectively shielding secondary radiation and evaluate its effectiveness. Using a mobile X-ray unit, spatial dose according to presence of human equivalent phantom and spatial dose using the developed shielding device were measured, and the phantom at 80 cm equidistance from center of X-ray was compared with spatial dose according to use of a shield. Measurements were taken at intervals of 10 cm every $30^{\circ}$ from the head direction($-90^{\circ}$) to the body direction($+90^{\circ}$). In the spatial dose measurement with and without the phantom, when the human equivalent Phantom was used, the spatial dose was increased by 40% in all directions from 40 cm to 100 cm from the central X-ray, and about 88% of the space dose was reduced when using the developed shields with the phantom. The equidistance dose at 80 cm from the central X-ray was increased by 39% from $5.1{\pm}0.26{\mu}Gy$ to $7.1{\pm}0.15{\mu}Gy$ when the human equivalent phantom was used, and when phantom was used and shielding was used, the spatial dose was reduced by about 90% from $7.1{\pm}0.15{\mu}Gy$ to $0.7{\pm}0.07{\mu}Gy$. The spatial dose of natural radiation was measured to be about $0.2{\pm}0.04{\mu}Gy$ when using the developed shielding with Phantom at a distance of 1 m or more. It is expected that by using the developed shielding system, it will be possible to effectively reduce secondary radiation dose received in all directions and to ensure safe imaging.

Effects of 835-MHz Radiation on the Intracellular Calcium, Reactive Oxygen Species, and F-actin Polymerization in Rat-2 Fibroblasts

  • We investigated the effects of 835-MHz electromagnetic field (EMF), one of the most popular communication frequency band in Korean code-division multiple-access (CDMA) mobile phone system, on cellular signal transduction. For this, we examined the change of intracellular calcium $([Ca^{2+}]_i)$, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and F-actin polymerization after exposure to 835-MHz EMF followed by the treatment of agonists in Rat-2 fibroblast cells. Culture cells were pretreated with serum-tree medium and concomitantly exposed to 835-MHz at specific absorption rate (SAR) of 4.0 W/kg for 24 hr in a specialized designed apparatus based on Transverse Electro Magnetics (TEM) wave theory. Intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ responses to lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) in Rat-2 fibroblast after exposure to 835-MHz EMF were shown to be similar pattern as observed in normal cultured cells. However, the LPA-induced calcium spiking was slightly delayed to 7 sec and sustained thereafter to a little higher ground level under 835-MHz EMF radiation compared to unexposed cells. ROS production level by LPA in the exposed cells was not different from that in control. Furthermore, LPA induced the production of stress fibers with no significant difference in the exposed and unexposed cells. These results suggest that mobile phone radiation (835-MHz, SAR 4.0 W/kg) may not be directly related to signal transduction in Rat-2 fibroblasts except the slight effect of calcium spiking in LPA-induced cells but remain to be further elucidated for possible indirect intervention.
