Recent advancement in traffic surveillance systems has allowed the researchers to obtain more detailed vehicular movement such as individual vehicle trajectory data. Understanding the characteristics of interactions between leading and following vehicles in the traffic flow stream is a backbone for designing and evaluating more sophisticated traffic and vehicle control strategies. This study proposes a methodology for estimating rear-end crash potential, as a probabilistic measure, in real-time based on the analysis of vehicular movements. The methodology presented in this study consists of three components. The first predicts vehicle position and speed every second using a Kalman filtering technique. The second estimates the probability for the vehicle's trajectory to belong to either 'changing lane' or 'going straight'. A binary logistic regression (BLR) is used to model the lane-changing decision of the subject vehicle. The other component calculates crash probability by employing an exponential decay function that uses time-to-collision (TTC) between the subject vehicle and the front vehicle. The result of this study is expected to be adapted in developing traffic control and information systems, in particular, for crash prevention.

Intentional aggressive driving (IAD) is a very dangerous driving behavior that threatens to attack the adjacent vehicles. Most existing studies have focused on the independent driving characteristics of attack drivers. However, the identification of interactions between the offender and the victim is necessary for the traffic safety analysis. This study established multi-agent driving simulation environments to systematically analyze vehicle interactions in terms of traffic safety. Time-to-collision (TTC) was adopted to quantify vehicle interactions in terms of traffic safety. In addition, a exponential decay function was further applied to compare the overall pattern of change in crash potentials when IAD events occurred. The outcome of this study would be useful in developing policy-making activities to enhance traffic safety by reducing dangerous driving events including intentional aggressive driving.
Soil respiration ($R_S$) is a critical component of the annual carbon balance of forests, but few studies thus far have attempted to evaluate empirical regression models in $R_S$. The principal objectives of this study were to evaluate the relationship between $R_S$ rates and soil temperature (ST) and soil water content (SWC) in soil from a cool-temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest, and to evaluate empirical regression models for the prediction of $R_S$ using ST and SWC. We have been measuring $R_S$, using an open-flow gas-exchange system with an infrared gas analyzer during the snowfree season from 1999 to 2001 at the Takayama Forest, Japan. To evaluate the empirical regression models used for the prediction of $R_S$, we compared a simple exponential regression (flux = $ae^{bt}$Eq. [1]) and two polynomial multiple-regression models (flux = $ae^{bt}{\times}({\theta}{\nu}-c){\times}(d-{\theta}{\nu})^f:$ Eq. [2] and flux = $ae^{bt}{\times}(1-(1-({\theta}{\nu}/c))^2)$: Eq. [3]) that included two variables (ST: t and SWC: ${\theta}{\nu}$) and that utilized hourly data for $R_S$. In general, daily mean $R_S$ rates were positively well-correlated with ST, but no significant correlations were observed with any significant frequency between the ST and $R_S$ rates on periods of a day based on the hourly $R_S$ data. Eq. (2) has many more site-specific parameters than Eq. (3) and resulted in some significant underestimation. The empirical regression, Eq. (3) was best explained by temporal variations, as it provided a more unbiased fit to the data compared to Eq. (2). The Eq. (3) (ST $\times$ SWC function) also increased the predictive ability as compared to Eq. (1) (only ST exponential function), increasing the $R^2$ from 0.71 to 0.78.
A stratified sampling method is generally used with a sample selected using the same sample weight in each stratum in order to improve the accuracy of the sampling survey estimation. However, the weight should be adjusted to reflect the response rate if the response rate is affected by the value of the variable of interest. It may be also more effective to adjust the weights by subdividing the stratum rather than using the same weight if the variable of interest has a linear relationship with the continuous auxiliary variables. In this study, we propose a method to increase the accuracy of estimation using an informative sampling design technique when the response rate is an exponential function of the variable of interest and the variable of interest has a linear relationship with the auxiliary variable. Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed method.

One of the problems for implementing the spot detection phase in the 2-DE gel image analysis program is the eliminating noises in the image. Remained noises after the preprocessing phase cause the over-segmented regions by the segmentation phase. To identify and exclude the over-segmented background regions, if we use the fixed thresholding method that is choosing an intensity value for the threshold, the spots that is invisible by the eyes but mean a very small amount proteins which have important role in the biological samples could be eliminated. This paper propose an adaptive thresholding method that come from an idea that is got on statistical analysing for the prominences of the peaks. The adaptive thresholding method works as following. Firstly we calculate an average prominence value curve and fit it to exponential function curve, as a result we get parameters for the exponential function. And then we calculate a threshold value by using the parameters and probability distribution of errors. Lastly we apply the threshold value to the region for determining the region is a noise or not. According to the probability distribution of errors, the reliability is 99.85% and we show the correctness of the proposed method by representing experiment results.

In this paper, we introduce the inverted exponentiated Weibull (IEW) distribution which contains exponentiated inverted Weibull distribution, inverse Weibull (IW) distribution, and inverted exponentiated distribution as submodels. The proposed distribution is obtained by the inverse form of the exponentiated Weibull distribution. In particular, we explain that the proposed distribution can be interpreted by Marshall and Olkin's book (Lifetime Distributions: Structure of Non-parametric, Semiparametric, and Parametric Families, 2007, Springer) idea. We derive the cumulative distribution function and hazard function and calculate expression for its moment. The hazard function of the IEW distribution can be decreasing, increasing or bathtub-shaped. The maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is obtained. Then we show the existence and uniqueness of MLE. We can also obtain the Bayesian estimation by using the Gibbs sampler with the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. We also give applications with a simulated data set and two real data set to show the flexibility of the IEW distribution. Finally, conclusions are mentioned.
The characteristics of the coherence functions of X axial, Y axial, and RZ axial (i.e., body axis) wind forces on the Shanghai World Trade Centre - a 492 m super-tall building with section varying along height are studied via a synchronous multi-pressure measurement of the rigid model in wind tunnel simulating of the turbulent, and the corresponding mathematical expressions are proposed there from. The investigations show that the mathematical expressions of coherence functions in across-wind and torsional-wind directions can be constructed by superimposition of a modified exponential decay function and a peak function caused by turbulent flow and vortex shedding respectively, while that in along-wind direction need only be constructed by the former, similar to that of wind speed. Moreover, an inductive analysis method is proposed to summarize the fitted parameters of the wind force coherence functions of every two measurement levels of altitudes. The comparisons of the first three order generalized force spectra show that the proposed mathematical expressions accord with the experimental results well. Later, the influences of coherence functions on wind-induced dynamic responses are analyzed in detail based on the proposed mathematical expressions and the frequency-domain method of random vibration theory.

Support vector machine is known to be the very useful statistical method in classification and nonlinear function estimation. In this paper we propose a monotone support vector regression (SVR) for the estimation of monotonically decreasing function. The proposed monotone SVR is applied to smooth the Kaplan-Meier estimate of survival function. Experimental results are then presented which indicate the performance of the proposed monotone SVR using survival functions obtained by exponential distribution.
A model for the distribution of stars in the disk and the spheroid of our Galaxy is reexamined from an edge-on view of the Galaxy obtained by selecting infrared sources from the IRAS Point Source Catalog. The sources are counted as a function of galactic latitude. longitude and $12{\mu}m$ apparent magnitude. The source counts are reasonably separated into the disk component and the spheroid component contributions and each of the contributions is further interpreted as a convolution of a spatial density distribution and a luminosity function based on the least-square fit method. The spatial density of the disk component has an exponential radial scale length of $h_R{\sim}2.6\;kpc$ and the vertical distribution follows a canonical $sech^2$ law with a scale height $h_z{\sim}240\;pc$. The distribution of the spheroid component can be represented by an oblate spheriod with an axis ratio $k{\sim}0.61$ and a de Vaucouleurs' $r^{1/4}$ law with an effective radius of $R_e{\sim}120\;pc$. The steep density gradient of the spheroid component is consistent with that of late M giants in the central bulge. The luminosity functions of the disk and the spheroid component stars resemble respectively those of the K luminosity function of disk M giants (Garwood and Jones 1986) and the bolometric luminosity function of M giants in bulge fields (Frogel et al, 1990).

The basin instantaneous unit hydrograph was derived by considering the network geometry and hillslope. The network geometry is quantified in a function, termed the width function, that reflects the distribution of runoff with flow distance from the outlet. The model using the derivation of the basin IUH consists of two components: the routing component of the initial distribution through the network by means of a simplified diffusion approximation and the hillslope component by means of a exponential distribution that is the probability density function of the travel time in the hillslope. The application of this method was tested on four observed flood data of Bocheong stream and Wi stream. The results show that the proposed method can be used for the analysis of the basin IUH.
