  • After applying the fiber cocktail(polypropylene and steel fibers) into the mixture of high strength concrete with a compressive strength of 50 MP, the fire test was carried out on specimens in order to evaluate the fire resistance performance, such as possible explosive spalling, temperature distributions of concrete and rebar. According to an enforcement ordinance, four column specimens were exposed to the fire for 180 minutes based on the standard curve of ISO-834. No explosive spalling has been observed. The required minimum quantity of polypropylene to prevent explosive spalling is more than 0.57 kg per unit concrete volume. The comparing test results from temperature distributions of concrete and rebar has found that the difference of fiber quantity is insignificant.

  • High Strength Concrete (HSC) has weakness that in a fire, it is spalled and brittles. The phenomenon of spalling is made by water vapor's being confined in watertight concrete. This study is aimed to evaluate explosive spalling properties of high strength concrete with ${\square}100{\times}100{\times}200$ mm specimen and ${\square}400{\times}400{\times}1500$ mm column. To prevent spalling of concrete, fireproof coating and PP fiber are used. As a result, ${\square}400{\times}400{\times}1500$ mm column was prevented spalling likes ${\times}100{\times}100{\times}200$ mm specimen. When concrete protected failure to explosive spalling, quantity heat ratio (which fireproof coating specimen to pp fiber mixed specimen) between ${\square}100{\times}100{\times}200$ mm and ${\square}400{\times}400{\times}1500$ mm was maximum value at 20 minute, but difference of quantity heat ratio decreased and quantity heat ratio of each specimen is almost same at 30 minute.

  • This paper demonstrates numerical techniques for complex large-scale modeling with microplane constitutive theories for reinforced high strength concrete, which for these applications, is defined to be around the 7000 psi (48 MPa) strength as frequently found in protective structural design. Applications involve highly impulsive loads, such as an explosive detonation or impact-penetration event. These capabilities were implemented into the authors' finite element code, ParaAble and the PRONTO 3D code from Sandia National Laboratories. All materials are explicitly modeled with eight-noded hexahedral elements. The concrete is modeled with a microplane constitutive theory, the reinforcing steel is modeled with the Johnson-Cook model, and the high explosive material is modeled with a JWL equation of state and a programmed burn model. Damage evolution, which can be used for erosion of elements and/or for post-analysis examination of damage, is extracted from the microplane predictions and computed by a modified Holmquist-Johnson-Cook approach that relates damage to levels of inelastic strain increment and pressure. Computation is performed with MPI on parallel processors. Several practical analyses demonstrate that large-scale analyses of this type can be reasonably run on large parallel computing systems.

  • Effects of metallic Al powder addition on basic and thermal properties of castable refractories were investigated. Generally, low grade prooperties were obtained by metallic Al powder addition with the increase of temperature, comparing with those of non-addition of Al powder. Especially, Al addtion showed severe shrinkage, corrosiion and low strength above 1000$^{\circ}C$. As a result of Al addition, lower strength of and higher corrosion resistance were shown for 2% addition, but it was reversed for above 4% addition. It was found that Al addition was excellent in the explosive spalling test regardless of Al quantity.

  • The use of low-grade coal is continuously increasing with the development of combustion technology and cost reduction for coal used in thermal power plants . During combustion, the latent heat of evaporation due to moisture is large, and there is a risk of spontaneous combustion and dust explosion during the process of storing and pulverizing coal. This study compared and evaluated the minimum explosive concentration and explosive strength of four types of coal dust-fine, coal dust-coarse, wood pallet+organic dust, and wood chip with coal powder collected from domestic power plant D. The minimum explosive concentration of coal dust was measured according to JIS Z 8818:2002, and the explosion strength was tested according to ASTM E1226 using a Siwek 20 L Chamber Apparatus. As a result of the minimum explosive concentration test, it was found that coal dust-fine has a risk of dust explosion, and since an explosion occurs at a dust concentration of 130 g/m3 of wood chips, it was found that there is a risk of explosion at the lowest dust concentration. According to the dust explosion class standard, Kst is less than 200 bar m/s, and all samples fall under the explosion class St 1, and the dust has a low risk of explosion.

  • High strength concrete(HSC) has been mainly used in large SOC structures. HSC have superior property as well as improvement in durability compared with normal strength concrete. In spite of durability of HSC, explosive spalling in concrete front surface near the source of fire occurs serious problem in structural safety. It is reported that spalling is caused by the vapor pressure under fire and polypropylene(PP) fiber has an important role in protecting from spalling. The spalling properties of ultra high strength concrete specimens with various contents of PP fiber were investigated in this study. In results, the content of PP fiber for spalling protection increases over 0.2 vol.% as the concrete strength increases to 120 MPa.

  • To prevent the explosive spalling of the high strength concrete and control the rise of temperature in the steel rebar during fire, a fiber cocktail method has been proposed simultaneously with the use of polypropylene and steel fiber. After applying the fiber cocktail (polypropylene and steel fibers) into the mixture of high strength concrete with a compressive strength of between 40 and 100 MPa and evaluating the thermal properties at elevated temperatures, the fire test was carried out on structural members in order to evaluate the fire resistance performance. Two column specimens were exposed to the fire without loading for 180 minutes based on the standard curve of ISO-834. No explosive spalling has been observed and the original color of specimen surface was changed to light pinkish grey. The inner temperature of concrete dropped rapidly starting from 60mm deep. After 60 minutes of exposure to the fire, the temperature gradient of fiber cocktail reinforced high strength concrete was measured as 2.2oC/mm, which is approximately 5 times less than that of normal concrete. The final temperatures of steel rebar after 180 minutes of fire test resulted in 488.0oC for corner rebar, 350.9oC for center rebar, and 419.5oC for total mean of steel rebar. The difference of mean temperature between corner and center rebar was 137.1oC The tendency of temperature rise in concrete and steel rebar changed between 100oC and 150oC The cause of decrease in temperature rise was due to the water vaporization in concrete, the lower temperature gradient of the concrete with steel and polypropylene fiber cocktails, the moisture movement toward steel rebars and the moisture clogging.

  • Polymer modified cement mortar (PCM) can improve the performance of adhesion strength, flexural strength, chemical resistance, etc., compared with cement mortar, and is widely used when repairing RC structures. However, PCM causes a burst in an environment with high temperature and fire rate, which causes problems in the stability of the structure. In this study, for the purpose of developing explosive reduction PCM, the polymer mixing ratio is 2%, 4%, 6%, the fiber length is 6mm, 12mm, 6+12mm, and the PP fiber mixing rate is 0.05 Vol% and 0.1 Vol%. Furnace heating experiment (600℃, 800℃) was carried out. As a result of comparative analysis of the explosive properties, it was confirmed that the explosive reduction effect due to the fiber incorporation was insufficient when the polymer mixing amount was 6% or more.
