Dust explosions are occurring in a variety of industries. A dust explosion caused by a specific energy generates huge amount of energy in the ignition and releases decomposition gas. Damages can be increased since this released decomposition gas can cause second and subsequent explosions. In this study, the goal was to obtain practical information on what could affect the explosion by comparing the characteristics of two kinds of dusts with completely different chemical properties. Three kinds of dusts were measured and evaluated for explosion pressure, dust explosion index, explosion limit and minimum ignition energy. It is possible to grasp the characteristics of each dust and use it as useful accident prevention data in the production of raw material powder.

Hazard risk of explosion on pharmaceutical raw materials dust in pharmaceutical industry often exists when it is handled or processed in the industrial sites, and explosion accident is caused by this. In this study, the dust explosion characteristics of the three pharmaceutical raw materials samples were measured. The main explosion characteristics are as follows: $P_{max}$, MIE and MIT of loxoprofen acid having $5.31^{\circ}C$ of median diameter are obtained 8.4 bar, 1 mJ < MIE < 3 mJ and $550^{\circ}C$. $P_{max}$, MIE and MIT of camphorsulfonate having $95.63^{\circ}C$ of median diameter are obtained 7.9 bar, 30 mJ < MIE < 100 mJ and $510^{\circ}C$. $P_{max}$, MIE and MIT of rifampicine having $26.48^{\circ}C$ of median diameter are obtained 7.9 bar and 1 mJ < MIE < 3 mJ and $470^{\circ}C$. The deflagration index ($K_{st}$) and the explosion index (EI) were obtained by using these data. The explosion hazard assessment of pharmaceutical raw materials dust was compared and examined. As a result, the explosion hazard assessment according to deflagration index and explosion index were the explosion class with St 2 and the explosion hazard rating of severe for loxoprofen acid & rifampicine and St 1 and strong for clopidogrel camphorsulfonate, respectively.

This paper stated the proposed algorithm to certify the characteristics of artificial explosion sounds traveled through underground bedrock medium. Artificial explosion that travel through underground bedrock had an attenuation within high frequency bands in increase of a distance with multiple transmission paths phenomenon and inhomogeneity of geological status. In this paper, explosion experiment was made in underground tunnel to verify efficiency of proposed algorithm. The could certify the characteristics of artificial explosion sounds as extracted and numerically quantified the characterized parameter with collected sound sample that traveled through underground bedrock channel.
The explosion of a chemical tanker ship during cargo transshipment via double-banking at Ulsan Port, resulted in major damage including fires involving nearby ships. As a follow-up measure to prevent the recurrence of similar accidents, the 'Safety Management of Dangerous Goods in Port' was established, and the designation of a transshipment pier for dangerous goods is required given the risk of explosion and the impact on major facilities in the port. This study evaluated the Fire & Explosion Index of major transshipment cargoes in Ulsan Port to design a transshipment pier based on the Explosion Risk Assessment. Based on the results of Fire & Explosion Index evaluation of styrene monomer and benzene, severe explosion risk was confirmed, and the exposure radius was calculated. Based on the results of the exposure radius, the risk range for each major pier was calculated, and 12 terminals were proposed as transshipment pier candidates considering port facilities, surrounding dangerous facilities, and residential aspects. Since the results of the study suggest transshipment piers based on the risk radius alone, maritime traffic safety, pier and mooring facilities, safety facilities and accessibility for emergency response should be considered comprehensively to designate actual transshipment piers.
Recently, a large amount of flammable or explosive materials have been handled or stored in chemical industries. H the equipments fail or the materials release in consequence of operation errors, fire and explosion could occur to them. Thus, risk assessment using quantification of risks is very important when design of processes and modifications of installed processes are performed. The purpose of this study is to develop the program for fire and explosion index in order to quantify the expected damage of fire and explosion incidents in chemical plants, to identify equipment that would be likely to contribute to the creation or escalation of an incident, to comunicate the potential fire and explosion risk to management and to account of damage cost.

Release of hazardous and flammable gas is a significant contributor to risk. The ignition of flammable gas clouds can lead to explosion accidents in the offshore installations. A gas detector, which is one of active protect systems, brings the module into a safe state through emergency shut down processes and reduces the damage by eliminating the dangerous releases. It is critical to understand the gas release, the wind field, and the complex geometry of installations to determine gas detector placement. In this paper, the Gas detector Location Index (GLI) which is a novel index for optimal detector location determination to efficiently prevent explosion accident using probabilistic approach.
Targeted introduction of explosion-resisting and energy-absorbing materials and optimization of explosion-resisting composite structural styles in underground engineering are the most important measures for modern engineering protection. They could also improve the survivability of underground engineering in wartime. In order to test explosion-resisting and energy-absorbing effects of high-performance equal-sized-aggregate (HPESA) concrete, the explosive loading tests were conducted on HPESA concrete composite plates by field simple explosion craters. Time-history curves of the explosion pressure at the interfaces were obtained under six conditions with different explosion ranges and different thicknesses of the HPESA concrete plate. Test results show that under the same explosion range, composite plate structures with different thicknesses of the HPESA concrete plate differ significantly in terms of the wave-absorbing ability. Under the three thicknesses in the tests, the wave-absorbing ability is enhanced with the growing thickness and the maximum pressure attenuation index reaches 83.4%. The energy attenuation coefficient of the HPESA concrete plate under different conditions was regressively fitted. The natural logarithm relations between the interlayer plate thickness and the energy attenuation coefficient under the two explosion ranges were attained.
In process installations, chemicals operate at high temperature and high pressure. Propylene is used as a basic raw material for manufacturing synthetic materials in the petrochemical industry; However, it is a flammable substance and explosive in the gaseous state. Thus, caution is needed when handling propylene. To prevent explosions, an inert gas, carbon dioxide, was used and the changes in the extent of explosion due to changes in pressure and oxygen concentration at 25 ℃, 100 ℃, and 200 ℃ were measured. At constant temperature, the increase in explosive pressure and the rates of the explosive pressure were observed to rise as the pressure was augmented. Moreover, as the oxygen concentration decreased, the maximum explosive pressure decreased. At 25 ℃ and oxygen concentration of 21%, as the pressure increased from 1.0 barg to 2.5 bar, the gas deflagration index (Kg) increased significantly from 4.71 barg·m/s to 18.83 barg·m/s.
To investigate characteristics and micro-explosion of single-droplets of emulsified fuel, water is mixed with diesel oil by using ultrasonic energy fuel feeding system. The fuel characteristics is analysed through H-NMR spectrum and micro-explosion phenomena of the emulsified fuel is also investigated. The life times of droplets of conventional diesel fuel, ultrasonic energy added diesel fuel and emulsified fuel we obtained additionally. According to this study, the micro-explosion phenomena of single-droplets happen in atmospheric pressure condition, a curve form of emulsified fuel's life tim is different from diesel fuel's one and the change of chemical structures is a cause of ultrasonic-energy-added diesel fuel effect.

Ensuring safety in the designing of manufacturing and handling facilities for low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is difficult because there are no standards for the dust explosion characteristics of LDPE. In this study, a dust explosion test was performed on two dust samples collected from a bag filter (LDPE 1) during the LDPE manufacturing process and sedimentary dust (LDPE 2) leaked outside a facility such as a silo, and the LDPE 2 explosion test results were summarized. Particle size analysis showed that the volume-based particle diameter (median) was 95.04 ㎛ and the number density was 0-1 ㎛. The maximum explosion pressure (Pmax) was 6.6 bar, and the maximum rate of explosion pressure rise was 366 [bar/s] at 1500 g/m3. Accordingly, the dust explosion index (Kst) was 99.4 bar·m/s, which was confirmed as ST-1 grade. Moreover, the minimum ignition energy and minimum ignition temperature was 10 mJ and 450 ℃, respectively. Currently, manufacturing and handling design is based on the characteristic values of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). However, as the test results show that LDPE 2 dust has a higher risk than HDPE (particle diameter 61.6 ㎛), caution is required when using the HDPE design criteria in the LDPE manufacturing process.
