  • A computer expert system for guiding Japanese style meal menu has been developed by using EXSYS Professional which is one of expert system developing software tools. The expert system nunderstands the situations of clients, and can guide the menu as human experts do by its software program with expert knowledge about the meal menu. In developing the expert system, the elements the clients consider when selecting menu were arranged as questions of the expert system, and the final outcome of the expert system resulted in selecting the final menu appropriate for the client demand, weather, health, etc. In hotel, the expert system can be shared by whole restaurants, and be directly a computer guider to the clients to tell the best choice of the menu. Besides, it can be used for various kinds of bangquets and events. Expert system has been developed and studied by business managers, manufactures, medical fields, and military field. But the studies for applying the expert system in the fields of foods have been scare. Through this study, therefore, the expert system is going to be applied more widely in many fields fo food events.

  • This paper proposes how to build an expert profile database in KMS, which provides the information of expertise that each expert possesses in the organization. To manage tacit knowledge in a knowledge management system, recent researches in this field have shown that it is more applicable in many ways to provide expert search mechanisms in KMS to pinpoint experts in the organizations with searched expertise so that users can contact them for help. In this paper, we develop a framework to automate expert classification using a text categorization technique called Vector Space Model, through which an expert database composed of all the compiled profile information is built. This approach minimizes the maintenance cost of manual expert profiling while eliminating the possibility of incorrectness and obsolescence resulted from subjective manual processing. Also, we define the structure of expertise so that we can implement the expert classification framework to build an expert database in KMS. The developed prototype system, "Knowledge Portal for Researchers in Science and Technology," is introduced to show the applicability of the proposed framework.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose the conceptual model of Scenario-based Project Planning Expert System which has not been used in domestic LNG plant industry. This research examines data on the plant project planning expert system of domestic and oversea, analyzes the components of project planning expert systems and benchmark excellent cases. The conceptual model of LNG plant project planning expert system is established through the procedure as has been noted above. The results of this research are as follows: First, this research draws out such components of LNG plant project planning expert system as feasibility, cost control, contract management and risk management. Second, this research proposes the conceptual model of LNG plant project planning expert system which core module is consist of feasibility evaluation, life cycle cost evaluation and decision making. Finally, each module of LNG plant project planning expert system would be integrated into the Scenario-based Project Planning Expert System.

  • This paper aims to introduce an overview of the regime of expert witness in the medical malpractice litigation, and to provide a plan of how to make it improved. In regard with medical expert witness, several problems, such as time-consuming procedure, non-neural and unclear opinion without reasons provided, have been pointed out for several years. Lack of skill of the court and plaintiff/defender to question the expert is one of many cause to lead to the above problems. What is questioned to the expert? Because expert witness is used in determining probability of negligence, questions to the expert should be selected on the grounds of whether or not to obtain opinions or facts sufficient to let the judge infer negligence in view of the theory of proof burden established by the Supreme Court. In addition, to avoid non-neutral and unclear opinion, it is necessary to question the expert clearly, specifically and scientifically.

  • The objective of this study is to provide guidelines for expert witness in product liability lawsuits. The expert testimony is one of the powerful methods to mitigate the burden of the proof in product liability litigations. However, it has been seldomly accepted as a reliable evidence by trial judges because the expert's testimony has sometimes turned out to be illogical and unreliable. In order for the expert testimony to be admittable in the court, the expert should have a thorough understanding of his/her role as an expert witness and follow scientific methodology whose soundness has been generally accepted by both industries and academy.

  • As the application of real time expert systems has been expanded, the real time expert systems have become an integral part of the information society. Real time expert systems are viewed as a new paradigm to integrate real time problem solving and expert system technology. However, a substantial amount of work is still required to effectively handle a new and challenging opportunity for successful implementation of real time expert systems. In this article, the basic concepts and characteristics of real time expert systems are discussed. The article also presents, through the literature survey, the summary of real time expert systems applications and a class of tools, providing an enabling real time based expert system technology. Finally, the article discusses a set of requirements which real time expert systems must satisfy.

  • In systematic tuning of digital STC parameters, systems with time-varying parameters and systems with time-varying delays are studied individually because of many preconditions and difficulties. In order to eliminate all these difficulties effectively, the expert control technique is required to enhance STC control functions. In this paper, an expert controller, a STC utilizing expert control technique, for process control is designed. The expert controller is composed of an unstability indicator for detecting plant unstability, an expert back-up controller and an expert STC which are switched each other by the unstability indication, and expert system with knowledge base and inference engine. This expert controller is able to perform control functions successfuly for the following` 1) a system which has unknown and time-varying delay time, 2) a time-varying system which has unknown parameters, and 3) a system with minimun and non-minimum phase. The robust control function is demonstrated by computer simulations.

  • A number of success story about various application areas including manufacturing, accounting, finance, education, and engineering are reported. MIS professionals predicted that expert systems would improve the productivity enormously. However, the expert system revolution has not happened yet. Although not reported in the open society widely, there are failure stories of expert systems. Most of problems concerning expert system failure stem from the non-technical issues such as cognitive and psychological problems rather than the technical issues. We hypothesize that human factor principle enables designers to handle most of these non-technical problems elegantly and to improve the performance and acceptance of the expert systems. Major reasons for expert system failure and needs of human factors are discussed. Human factor guidelines to expert system make the prospects of the expert systems with human factors clear and understandable.
